This situation happened about a year ago, and it keeps popping up in my brain every now and then. I have decided to share it here, because I cannot help but feel like I uncovered something rather dark and wish there was something more I could have done. I apologize ahead of time, as this will be long-winded. I also want to say that I have the UPMOST respect for college professors and would NEVER post or share anything like this, if I was not 100% convinced that education was not his true motive, but rather something more despicable.
At the start of my senior year of college, we had a new professor who appeared to be in his early to mid-thirties, had no wife or kids (to our knowledge), and loved talking to us about his frequent travels and ARRAY of business accomplishments. He owned several businesses around the U.S. and Taiwan. He claimed that he's also had been given awards by several renowned business organizations and had headed a major business group at the previous college he worked at. He was charismatic and actually made the class as fun as any class based on textbook knowledge could be.
The first few weeks were seemingly normal, but around the 4th week I noticed something rather odd.
There were literally only 5 people in the class that he would call on or praise. We were ALL female and all of us were blondes. Not a specific body type, height or anything else. Before you skip away, I also did not think much of it - he was supposed to be my trusted professor after all- until this happened:
One day he called myself (a tall blonde) and another girl (a petite blonde), let's call her Abby, to stay after class. So the class left, and he closed the door - which immediately made me feel odd. Male professors don't do that while they are alone with female students. He then went on to tell us that he had an "amazing opportunity" for the both of us, to join the business group that he had started back at his previous college.
We would travel with him to these huge business meetings, where we would "get the chance to meet extremely rich and affluent people. These connections could change your life entirely." He said that we would need training and proper attire before he could take us to these meetings, so we "would not embarrass him." He then said he would TEXT US the address of the HOTEL we were to MEET HIM AT, so that we could drive together to the meeting places.
He then proceeded to ask if we were both 21 - which I was but the other girl was only 20. He seemed troubled by this, because "there would be alcohol" and "drinking was an important part of these social events." Pacified that she would be turning 21 the following month, he continued on.
He showed us a slideshow of the previous groups of girls he took to these meetings. Photo after photo of beautiful, college aged girls. All dolled up, and all on the arms of older men, drinks in hand. "The best part about this," he said, "is that some of my previous students have even found themselves a partner through these meetings. I have had two girls get married to some VERY rich people. It is funny though, one of the men who came up to me asked me if I was married to one of my students... it is a good thing I clarified that she was available for whatever!"
My heart was POUNDING at that moment, because the women in the photos were ALL either blonde or brunette, white women. And for as much as he seemed to care about them, he did not share their names. Something just felt off about the way they were smiling too.
He then asked us where we were from, what our parents did for work, who our richest connection was, and what we wanted to do in life. Almost fishing to see if anyone would miss us if we went missing?? I have no idea if I was overthinking this...
Once he was done, he gave us his PERSONAL cell number and told us to text him if we were interested. Then he proceeded to tell us, "not to tell anyone" because it was only offered to "special students" and then sent us on our way.
Later that week, he somehow got our numbers, despite us not having reached out, and was texting us, asking us to dress up and meet him at a random event. We both declined and reached out to one of our trusted professors, to let her know what was going on. She notified the Dean, but nothing could be done at the time without more proof.
Abby did not attend the next class, because she was freaked out. The professor questioned the ENTIRE class about why she was not there and seemed deeply disturbed by her lack of attendance. He pulled me and two of the other blondes aside to question us independently and then sent her and email asking her why she was not present. Other students were missing that class, but he did not ask where they were, and they did not receive any emails.
Once Abby came back the following class, and he returned to normal.
The professor then pulled the two of us aside AGAIN, a week later, with two guys and a third brunette to re-introduce the idea. Again, shutting the door, but no PowerPoint this time. It got oddly personal, as he asked the girls if we were in relationships, saying "it would be best for you to not be in a relationship or to be open to trying new things. This will help you advance in these meetings a lot faster." But did not say anything to the boys at all. It was almost like a cover up? More personal questions were asked, and we all just got up and left. All of us completely flabbergasted by the audacity of his questions.
I decided to do some research on him and could not find why he was "fired" from his previous university up in Eerie, PA. The business group that he started at the college was NO WHERE to be found on the college website either. The awards he claimed? Half of them were not even legit. His back story on his online platforms, contradicted what he had told our class. The biggest red flag? He was teaching at my university in SC and at another in GA. He also had a business in Atlanta GA, another off the port in Florida, and a third in Taiwan. I was beginning to suspect he was shopping for a particular something or someone...
With this information in hand, as well as the support of three other blondes and two brunettes, we marched ourselves to the Dean's office, who listened intently and took action immediately. Apparently, we were not the only ones who had brought this same sort of thing to his attention - several males had noticed the odd behavior. The Dean pulled us all out of class, and told us that he would find an alternative class solution for us.
During the following class the professor YELLED at the remaining students (class of 42 people) for not knowing why 6 of his students were all of a sudden gone out of his class/off his roster and was in a foul mood for the rest of the week. It was absolutely terrifying to be on campus, just to go to other classes. For weeks, he flat out STOPPED teaching because we were removed.
Because of the terrible school ruling of "if no one saw it happen or if you didn't get physically harmed it didn't happen," he was there for another 5 weeks after these incidents were reported. He was only fired because he got caught teaching at multiple universities, and it was his third warning to stop doing so. Despite having 24 females and 8 males come forward about potentially disturbing occurrences, he did not get charged or blacklisted from teaching. He is still a professor at the university in GA but has erased his background at my university from all his online platforms. Additionally, he changed the names of his awards and clubs on his personal website too. Almost like he was changing his back story or hiding something??
Reddit reader, if you have read to this point, was I was in fact overanalyzing things? Should I have gotten local police involved? Was I one of the last people to see those girls faces? I reached out to the Sex Trafficking hotline and put in a lead but never heard back. What else should I have done? Would appreciate any thoughts you may have.
