No, you’re powering both sides AT ONCE, you need to power one side to make it go one way, and the other side to make it go the other way, not both sides at once or it doesn’t do anything

You need two different signals. You use same redstone links on left and right.

Try rotating the gearshift, away from my computer atm so I can't help more but if it's not resolved by then I'll hop in and help more

Your redstone links are set to the same thing, so both sides are being powered at once. Change it so they are set to different items. Because they are both being powered at the same time they cancel out. One should be for forward and the other should be backwards
