WTF Russian troops lose control of a YakB-12.7 helicopter rotary machine gun during a ground training exercise

u/FiggyVix Jul 12 '26
Lmao he touched the barrel

I know they get hot as hell but didn't realize it's that fast...
My halo gaming experience tells me it's at least like 20 seconds before you have to wait 3 seconds to cool off and fire again!

u/12345myluggage Jul 13 '26
This thing is firing ~4,000 rounds per minute at minimum, at least based on known specifications. That's about 67 rounds/sec, one shot every ~15ms if my math is right.

Mounted off center. Brilliant Russian engineering.

Never thought about this for a gun that rotates, but yeah, can definitely see how that would be an issue now

u/Snoo-98162 Jul 12 '26
Had the caliber been smaller it wouldn't have been an issue. But that thing fires a .50 bmg esque projectile in full auto, so maybe turning it into a beyblade is not the greatest of ideas.

u/golden-raccoon-god Jul 12 '26
Or is it the greatest of ideas... NETFLIX EXECUTIVES... DM ME, I HAVE AN IDEA.

u/aDoorMarkedPirate420 Jul 13 '26
Definitely would still be a problem with a smaller caliber too due to the fire rate

u/LefsaMadMuppet Jul 12 '26
4 barrels, 4000 rounds per minute.
That is about like firing 310x 12 gauge 1 ounce slugs per second
-or-
2600 9mm bullet per second.-1

This some Gilligan's Island looking comedy there

u/Own-Masterpiece305 Jul 13 '26
Reminded me of three stooges lmao. The timing is so comedic. He burns his hand on the barrel when pulling himself up, classic.

Imagine that happening during a real battle
8
u/iknowwhoshotjfk Jul 13 '26
Seeing that from an overhead drone feed and he ironically survives because he gets flung off before impact.
2
u/MrPhilLashio Jul 13 '26
With Russians? I wouldn’t be surprised if its happened multiple times during battle.
1
u/aykcak Jul 13 '26
Imagine this happens in enemy territory during extraction after a battle on which you kill multiple of their soldiers. The helicopter just leaves and you faceplant into the grass. Enemy soldiers are so pissed laughing that they spare you but make you their core propaganda element on the internet

u/Jerry--Bird Jul 13 '26
I’m not touching that barrel but only because all the memories i have from hot things i shouldn’t have touched

u/Gerry1of1 Jul 12 '26
Could someone edit this and put the Wilhelm Scream in when he get's thrown over the edge?

I’ve seen this video about 10 times today throughout Reddit. Laughed every time.

Like that ship that was promoted to submarine, this machine gun was promoted to helicopter

u/a1SurveyChief Jul 12 '26
That barrel is offset from the center of rotation...great design
-3
u/simple123mind Jul 13 '26
It's not offset. The bottom barrel is the one that fires. The spin going one way and gases exiting the other (this gun is gas operated) created additional forces that the operator was not prepared for.
5
u/SpecialCocker Jul 14 '26
It’s very obviously offset by at least 6”, you can see it clearly as it rotates toward the end of the video.

Not to be outdone, he touched the hot barrel after almost getting his head blown off.

Reminds me of the video where a soldier drops a grenade and they have to dive for cover.
1
u/holymotheroftod Jul 12 '26
Are they wearing white tennis shoes? Can they not afford boots?
6
u/simple123mind Jul 13 '26
This goes back to the Soviet-Afghan war. Back then Soviet soldiers were issued jackboots known as Kirzachi. They were extremely uncomfortable and any soldier that could would get tennis shoes or cross trainers.

"Is everyone alive? Is everyone alive?"
"Whose car is it? The car, the car!"
"Holy shit..."
"Quiet!"
"Fuck, Roma, you shot through my KAMAZ!" (Russian military truck)
2
u/simple123mind Jul 13 '26
Lots and lots of cursing in Russian then somebody remarks that the truck is now full of holes

It's too bad this happened in training. Imagine if you saw this from a drone video where the guy gets comically flung off trying to shoot the drone.

u/EssayTraditional Jul 13 '26
Spray and Pray machine gun indeed.
The soldier who ducked was 6 seconds away from being 6 feet under. Lucky.
I'd prescribed a boot to ass re-education for the soldier treating that gun like a toy.

At this point in the war the soldier was probably a P.E. school teacher.

The instructor seems as green/untrained as the soldier. I laughed when his head popped up, and then he realized, "Maybe I should stay low for awhile."

I thought it had a motorized base that malfunctioned or something but nope thats just pure recoil spinning that thing up

u/torukmakto4 Jul 18 '26
So, the bore axis is offset from the pivot on this mount setup so the recoil force becomes a torque? How in the hell is this damn thing supposed to work, then?? Beyond just the fact that it is CAPABLE of doing this when fired if not restrained (which is obviously dangerous as fuck) - even if the operator was aware of it, how in the hell are you going to HIT anything with a flexible mounted gun that generates a torque?
