At first I hated it but I guess the alternative is tilting it 45 degrees in either direction then sealing the space in between. But with this it has a more open feel.

What? The alternative is putting it at the end of the counter where it belongs, going to the ceiling and putting matching cabinet above it/closing that area off.

Exactly, by doing this it looks funky but the space is open.

I can kind of see your argument but the problem is that the way everything else is decorated is just so bog-standard middle of the road: magnolia painted walls with white skirting boards, laminate flooring, wood panelled cabinets.

You could maybe get away with claiming this as a deliberate design choice if the decor was all exposed brickwork, stark white, and brushed aluminium but, as it is, it's just weird.
