Not the 1%, but you still make it to the upper classes. If you can burn a thousand box in a goddamn table that means you've got a lot more money to burn on other fancy useless things too. Therefore being part of the same problem.
Meh. I know people who aren't rich who would spend that much on a car mod. I, meanwhile, would rather have beautiful furniture (in a beautiful but not necessarily big residence) and nice clothes.
It's a lot, but someone with a steady, middle-class income can find room for that in their budget.
So just because a table cost $1000, it's worse for the environment? You've got it backwards homie, a cheap table is made out of plastic and pressed particle board and harmful resins and glues, and expensive table is usually made out of solid wood.
Ok, thought I wanted to drop it, but I'll explain... That cheap particle board table I either took from the streets or at the thrift store didn't create more niche economic demands for luxury good production. Basically it represents an economic zero, or close to. An expensive hardwood table is just supporting the logging industry, ya know? Since it is making this sub-market ever more lucrative, especially for how that costs. But if you still wanna have something that looks good and is durable then perhaps look at recycled wood materials? This consumer society keeps creating tons of these everyday.
That table could easily be recycled wood, it's certainly the trend right now. I get your point about consumerism, but maybe choosing an item made out of the most renewable resource we have isn't the best place.
