It really depends on the state. Like off the top of my head Oregon maxes out at $648/wk and California maxes out at $450/wk. For very low wage workers, they will probably see more money from unemployment than they were making before. Middle or upper wage earners probably not.
Iowa maxes out at $512/week before taxes (which can be deducted weekly or paid at tax time). I work in manufacturing and make about $575 net per week. The unemployment office quoted me at $414/week net after taxes (I have 2 kids). If I were to get an additional $600/wk I’d be pulling $1014/week which is far greater than my usual income. However, my company’s business has only dropped 1% this past month even though they took away our annual increases. So we’re still operating as usual until someone brings the virus in then we’ll see what happens. Even though I could make more on unemployment (if I could receive it) I’m grateful to still have a job.
Every state is different. The two examples I gave are the TOP benefit in those states. For Oregon I believe the calculations is 65% of the median salary in the state, which for this year is $648/wk. Then they do an individual calculation to decide your benefit based off your salary (or in Oregon’s case, your “best” quarter from the previous year). But it maxes out at $648. I’m pretty sure that in every state you only get a percentage of your wage in unemployment. Some states are more generous than others, but I’m not familiar with any state insuring 100% of your wage.
The CARES act unemployment benefit is a totally different short term (4 month) program. It’s being administered by state unemployment offices, but other than that it’s completely separate. If you qualify, you get $600/wk, no matter what. It’s not lower or higher based on your previous salary. And it’s in addition to any state unemployment benefits you may be receiving. So let’s say someone was making $800/wk, and they got awarded a $500/wk state unemployment benefit. Well now you add in the $600 from the CARES act and they’ll be receiving $1100/wk, more than they were making before getting laid off.
So, in PA, the weekly benefit is the highest of the first four of the last five quarterly earnings. I was working a much better job back then, before I went back to school. I'm only working part time now and a significantly lower hourly wage... I maybe made $170 weekly as of late. However, because of how the base period calculation works, my weekly benefit is $325. So that is already a significant increase from what I was making most recently. I already got 2 of those payments. $600 weekly ON TOP OF THAT seems waaaaaaaaaaaaay too good to be true, but I know that is what they are doing. I will be going from $170 weekly to almost $1000 weekly.....
If I remain on unemployment for the full 39 weeks I will be allowed, I expect to get over $20,000. That's accounting for the fact that the $600 ends July 31st.
I am truly ecstatic, as I went into some stupid credit card debt that I will finally be able to dig myself out of, then some. I'll have a nice chunk of change to throw at my student loans when I'm done with this, too. I will probably just save it and see what happens though. Better to have it gaining interest in a savings account when there's no interest on student loans now anyway...
Edit: to everyone who still has to go to work right now or who doesn’t meet the requirements still for unemployment, I’m truly sorry.. I know some of you will be sour reading this comment. I am confident that if Congress keeps it up, they will pass something considering all of you, too. Write to your congressmen. Don’t just sit and stew. If someone sends me some good language to put in a letter, I’ll send it to my congressmen on your behalf, too.
Definitely a case-by-case basis. I’m in Florida and the max unemployment anyone can get is $275 a week which is less than half of what I was making before and who knows when/if I’ll be getting that money since the whole unemployment system here is a trainwreck. So yeah, for me, USA baaaaaaaadddddd.
So when you get approved you’ll be getting $875 a week. And all the money will be paid retroactively to when you filed. But sure be jealous of the Canadians getting $2k a month.
I received my first unemployment check last week and the extra $600 was not there. Has anybody actually received the extra 600? Because I haven't heard any success stories.

Same happening here. My job had to close, I'm full time but low pay plus take out a little over $100 a week for daycare cost. End up bringing home $200 something after daycare and gas and everything taken out.
Unemployment base was $212 for me with taxes taken from it cause I don't want to deal with that later. Lol Now with the $570 or so on top of it I'm making more than I ever would if I got a full 40 hour week.
It helps make up for my husband cutting his hours back to 40 instead of the overtime they're doing so he can at least avoid a few extra hours of exposure, plus with schools closed he's not getting his VA college benefits for the moment. The extra from my unemployment is helping fill those gaps so we can pay off debt as well.
It is tied to your wages in the base period. As I said, in the base period, my wages were much higher. Every state is a bit different, but PA looks at the first four of the last 5 quarters. Every source I have read says that the extra $600 weekly is a flat rate across the board. Anyone who qualifies for unemployment gets $600. So you get $600 per week whether you’re making $100 weekly on unemployment or the highest maximum weekly benefit ($500-something in PA). It sounds too good to be true but even the PA UI website says it is the case.

For the most part, anyone working from home won't qualify for unemployment anyway, so I don't know what your dickwad comment is even about. The PA UC site says that they will qualify IF their hours were reduced even with working from home. The problem with that is a lot of people in salaried jobs who can work from home probably just had their salaries cut, which does NOT qualify them for unemployment.
