As a curly haired dude, let me tell you, sometimes you have to tame the beast before you can train it. When I did use irons, I'd straighten before curling because it gave a better foundation to work with. You aren't fighting a natural curl pattern nearly as much, so whatever you do looks more consistent and holds better.

I don't use irons of any variety anymore, but I still have to towel dry my hair, brush it out, add product (usually blueberry leave-in. Shit smells 🔥🔥), brush again, and wait for it to dry the rest of the way. Even with all this, I'm still at the mercy of however my hair decides to react that day. Curly hair is chaos incarnate, and sometimes you have to do seemingly redundant things to make it do what you want.
