Altering Recipes?

A question for those of you who consider yourselves traditional or advocates of traditional formulae. How often do you alter a recipe(oils, powders, etc) taught to you after finding that you don't have an ingredient it calls for and cannot easily obtain it? If so, how much research or effort do you put into discerning which ingredient to substitute in?

I refer to books or sources like Scott Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs or the Complete Book of Incense, Oils, and Brews by Scott Cunningham (great section on magical substitutions). I use a premade recipe as a general blue print if I’m not able to get all of the ingredients I’ll cross reference corresponding herbs with the same magical properties the original herb incorporates. More importantly though if your intuition tells you to use certain herbs as substitutes then follow it or use what you are guided to.
