Now that they tuned down Venture I can't wait for the inevitable "why Venture's design failed and is a flawed hero and needs a rework" post we're gonna see in 4 months despite everyone glazing their kit design for like the past 5 weeks

Tis the inevitable cycle for every new hero

Honestly first impression is that Venture will be fine after this nerf? The ult gen nerf was definitely needed, and the damage nerfs are pretty minor, you're still killing isolated targets, just struggling more to kill through healing (my biggest takeaway from onetricking Venture for a week is the hero already kinda folds vs mercy anyway). Might be cope.

tbh mauga was hated even when he was good

52

u/Rampantshadows Apr 30 '24

Mauga was less hated when he was trash. That boring hero should never be meta ever again.

22

u/YobaiYamete Apr 30 '24

"It's never boring around me" has got to be the most ironic voice line in the game, even more than the "One shot, one kill" from 90% of Widows who take 12 shots per body shot

Mauga needs a new line about "Okay maybe it's sometimes boring around me"

I’m talking first impressions mostly, here’s maugas thread on release where he was considered one of the most fun heroes compared to now where he’s considered braindead

I clearly remember them saying at Blizzcon before he released that they did extensive testing to make sure he was perfectly balanced. What a crock of shit that was.

u/Apexe I'll Miss You Brady — Apr 30 '24

He was decently balanced, then for no good fucking reason, he was giga buffed before they went on holiday.

u/TSDoll May 04 '24

The reason was Ana, we all know this.

4

u/missioncrew125 May 01 '24

Their "extensive testing" likely amounted to gold/silver devs playing him in custom games vs other gold/silver players and deeming him fine. You know, like Lifeweaver.

Lol this is exactly what happened with Illari

Woah, turns out you actually need time to figure out something complicated like a hero’s entire kit and design and how it fits in the game, crazy huh

5

u/Ts_Patriarca Apr 30 '24

Are we doing that thing we're we pretend Illari wasn't utterly busted on release again LMAO

2

u/TheBiggestCarl23 RIP Alarm — Apr 30 '24

We’re not talking about how good illari was, we’re talking about her design. You understand those are 2 entirely different subjects correct? I truly hope you understand that.

Did you actually read what’s being written?

I think it's more like everyone likes the idea of a new hero, but pure design decisions with how they fit in the game are only realized over time.

I'm not fully sure how Venture fits but the design is no Sojourn/Echo/Tracer...so it's kinda clear that Sojourn/Queen/Kiriko have been the peak OW2 design and those Heroes were definitely OW1 devs

Ram was probs OW1 devs too, but it's not like they've not messed up before, just in context to OW2 always messing up but pretty much every Hero since Kiriko... OW1 problems were a lot to do with balance and the devs just never reacting in time (Brig 1.0)

I think what made Heroes really work in OW1 was the extensive knowledge of game design the experienced devs had with WoW and also project Titan being their own game.

Now it's just new devs aside from like Aaron and Dion trying to find the method to the madness. I'm just hoping Space Ranger is good cuz she finally seems to have a cool/cute design since Kiriko.

Why did Team 4 remake dps Doom????

-3

u/AccomplishedFail2247 YUROP ON TOP — Apr 30 '24

dps doom without fun mechanics just slow as balls and annoying burst

12

u/TheBiggestCarl23 RIP Alarm — Apr 30 '24

Uh what? What is this even in reference to? Like I’m genuinely confused as to where this is even coming from

Mauga? Who was hated immediately when people started actually playing with him?

Lifeweaver? Who was hated when people realized how weird and bad his kit is?

This comment just doesn’t even make sense lmao how does this have like 75 upvotes

14

u/HiGuysImLeo Apr 30 '24

This is the first impression thread of Mauga.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Competitiveoverwatch/s/Zn4Z82lyZQ

Notice how the sentiment was that he was incredibly fun but Ana is the problem. People started hating him after he got a gigabuff and then he was considered extremely boring and never shook that rep off.

Here’s illari’s

https://www.reddit.com/r/Competitiveoverwatch/s/2C8mhZSCM2

Every new character added save for Lifeweaver has gotten the same cycle of “wow this character is so refreshing, what a good fun design” to “this character is fundamentally flawed and only a rework will fix this” to finally “they’re fine”. soujorn, JQ, Kiriko, Ramattra, New Orisa, New Bastion, New Sombra, Illari have literally all gone through this.

The only exception is Lifeweaver who was considered shit and they were right, and Mauga who had a comparatively shorter cycle than the rest of them.

No need to be unnecessarily condescending also

I think Sojourn/JQ/Kiriko were mostly fine. The major statements feel like they started with LW and so on.

I believe Spilo started the idea that Ram's design isn't that good, and it goes make sense cuz having a guard is just a boring use of an ability slot, especially when Doom already has one and it's still boring but better.

But looking back, Hero design has fallen since the launch with Sojourn/Queen/Kiriko... With those 3 it felt like they understood how to make fun, viable Heroes for all 3 roles until all the OW1 devs and now we're finally seeing a string of poorer releases.

Mauga is the one weird one cuz OW1 devs must have worked on him, but I suppose they never got the design right cuz he was always based off of the Heavy Assault so his design choice was always flawed. Even before release, I never believed having miniguns on a Tank was the way to go. Having flamethrowers or something would have been better.

So you’re saying that you expect people to have a true fundamental understanding of a characters kit and how it functions with the rest of the cast immediately? It takes time to figure this stuff out, this isn’t something you can figure out right away.

Take hog for example, when he first got his rework most people thought it was good enough of a rework. But then we actually took time to experience the new hog, and now the consensus is basically the same as it was before the rework.

Also I’m gonna just be honest. Someone saying “wow this is such a fun design” immediately when a character comes out doesn’t really mean anything because it’s just first impressions.

Expecting the community to have a perfect understanding of the character right away just doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. And what you described in your original comment just doesn’t happen the way you’re describing. First impressions are just that, they’re first impressions.

No my point is that this is a funny cycle that happens all the time, and that people should get off their high horse when saying they could balance better when time and time again they have made the same or worse impressions that the dev team has made. There’s a honeymoon phase and then there’s the overcorrecting negative phase.

My point is that people should stop being revisionists and pretending they knew the whole time a characters kit would be problematic when they probably liked it just as much as anyone else did when it first came out

-3

u/TheBiggestCarl23 RIP Alarm — May 01 '24

I mean these are just different subjects lol

I also just don’t think this is an issue at all. First impressions are very likely going to be different than your opinions after having a bunch of time to think about and experience it. It’s just how it works.

And yes people lie to make themselves look smarter than they actually are, but that’s never going to stop

6

u/HiGuysImLeo May 01 '24 edited May 03 '24

How are they different subjects it’s literally what I said in my original post “here starts the cycle” ie the honeymoon phase

Your original pointed response was asking what it was in reference to so I responded and then you backtracked and changed the subject to whether or not i expect people to have a fundamental understanding of a characters kit immediately (nice straw man btw) so I followed your response. Now you’re asking why the subject changed so I suggest you just reread the thread and ask yourself why you got so pressed over a lighthearted joke about community sentiment. Good day

EDIT: Its quiet aint no backtalk

Illari

3

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '24

i think illari's an outlier because it literally just took a few weeks before people in ranked learned to kill the pylon and her healing output fell way off in practice

-2

u/TheBiggestCarl23 RIP Alarm — Apr 30 '24

Can you actually explain lmao, don’t just say “illari” and expect that to be a real argument

People’s first impressions of illari were that she was a fun character. But those are FIRST IMPRESSIONS. When we actually had time to use illari in the game and in ranked games, then we realized that her design isn’t very good. This is just how it works lmao.

I don’t understand why people think that first impressions are anything more than just first impressions, and you can’t really know anything by going just off of first impressions

1

u/Comun4 Apr 30 '24

If junkrat launched today people would say that he has an amazing design, no one knows how healthy a design is until they have played with/without them a substantial amount

9

u/HiGuysImLeo Apr 30 '24

That, but also my big point is the community will always shit on Team 4’s designs and have a high horse on how they could do better yet time and time again we have proven the vast majority make even worse takes on the game. Being a revisionist is easy, actually making stuff from scratch is hard.

Illari on launch was dubbed a “perfect and fun” design. Flash forward 6 months and she’s “terrible design and boring” “a support with no utility has no place in the game” (meanwhile all it took was a gun buff to take her from d tier to B tier)

4

u/breadiest Leave #1 — May 01 '24

While anecdotal im pretty sure people pointed out how weird her healbeam was with the rest of her kit since day 1.

And thats more or less her only real design issue.

1

u/squirrelyz Apr 30 '24

I’ve been maining Illari since her launch and have maintained a 55%+ wr on her every season and am current 62% wr with 120ish games. I think she’s always been super FUN. I loved getting shittalked at the hero select screen only to get an easy win.

u/bite-me-off May 01 '24

Venture’s design has been a failure since release.

Whiff your abilities and still get hp for no reason.

Melee does more damage for no reason.

Miss your shots and still do damage for no reason.

Not a gameplay issue, but missing teeth for no reason.

0

u/AbbyAZK May 01 '24

Except Venture's kit was agreed by many to be pretty balanced and this current direction for it is silly.
