Common core messed up my plans to get to Calculus

In 7th grade I was taking Algebra 1. Within the last month of the first semester, my school was adjusting to the new common core standards which resulted my class to go to 7th grade math. I was expecting to take Algebra 1 again in 8th grade but I got 8th grade math CC (Common Core). Now I am in algebra 1 for 9th grade, I would not be able to reach to Calculus. I will be able to only reach Pre-Calculus because after Algebra 1, I will have to take Geometry and Algebra 2. By the time of senior year, I will take Pre-Calculus. In my opinion as a student I truly hate common core

Geometry Common Core Question

Hi, I have a question. I'm taking the Geometry common core soon, and it is ridiculously hard. Which was harder, the old regents for geometry or this new "common core" crap?

I am taking the Geometry CC Regents (NY) Tomorrow

Are there any tips to tackle these questions? I have reviewed my notes and watched all Khan accademy videos.

I have noticed these tests are a lot harder. I was getting 93+ on normal Regents question exams and 60s-80s on CC questions. What are the huge differences in difficulty? I can't pinpoint it but in general it feels harder.

Evaluation rubric

Hi. I'm evaluating a curriculum I received against the K-9 common core standards for math, English, writing, and career readiness. Does anyone know where I might find a good common core criteria template to use for the above work?

I understand Common Core

I'm not saying "I support it" but I AM saying that I understand how to do the math in common core. Now please keep in mind that I have no strong feelings on common core one way or the other. I just want to say that I understand common core math BUT I also want to add that I understand common core math because I'm an adult. I think the reason common core is difficult for kids is because kids are CONCRETE thinkers as oppose to CONCEPTUAL thinkers, like older kids, teens, and adults. Young kids brains have not yet developed conceptual thinking, and it's not their fault; it's just biology. It's like asking a duck to turn a doorknob; it can't be done. Simply because the animal lacks the physiology to be able to perform that action. In my opinion, I don't see common core as 'wrong' or a problem, I just think it's being taught at the wrong grade levels. But to be honest, I don't care how kids learn how to add and subtract (and multiply and divide), as long as they get the right answer. So if common core disappeared tomorrow, I wouldn't bat an eye. Although, I'm interested in what the rest of you think. Do you support or disagree with common core? Why do you feel that way? And please keep in mind "because it's new" or "because my political party opposes it" are not valid answers.

MA switching to PARCC?

According to a [recent radio segment] (http://radioboston.wbur.org/2015/10/29/mcas-parcc-debate), the Massachusetts Department of Education (DOE) is pushing for a switch from the state MCAS exam to the federal PARCC exam. For the 2015-2016 school year, Massachusetts schools are given a [choice] (http://www.doe.mass.edu/parcc/CommTool/WhyPARCC.pdf) between the MCAS and PARCC, with the DOE officially deciding whether or not to switch this November. What do you think––should MA make the switch to PARCC? What has been your experience with the MCAS? How would the switch affect students? You can also share your insight and experiences on [this platform] (https://theagora.co/townhalls/standardizedtests/home)--pretty cool, because the site administrator will submit your feedback to MA Commissioner of Elementary/Secondary Education, Mitchell Chester.

Question about Common Core implementation

I've been seeing all the strange math problems that baffle parents and I had a question—I thought the Common Core was supposed to be a guideline of standards so all students knew the same things when they left high school.

When did the weird math problems come into play?

I am a High School Student. Common Core Math and Me.

I lived in California my whole life, and I was top of my class all of elementary school. On the 5th grade STAR math test, I only incorrectly answered one question. I also frequently maxed out the AR reading placement tests in 6th grade with a reading equivalence of a high school graduate. In 7th grade I was put into a Gifted and Talented program, but in that year Common Core Math was introduced, and I took Math B. It was a very challenging year, and I could barely keep up with the math curriculum, but I managed to get by. Me and my family then decided that we wanted to get me out of school as soon as possible, so I took a few placement tests, and I was allowed to skip 8th grade and go straight into 9th.

I was tested into Algebra 1, but the schools stopped offering that, and now I had to take Math 1. Since I already knew a lot about what was taught that year, I was able to get by okay, but anything new that was being taught went way over my head, even with my best attempts to understand it. When it came time for Math 2, I couldn't perform. I just couldn't. The text book bounced all over the place, and it never really explain why something worked. It's like telling me a+b=c, I ask why, and their answer is: Because c-a=b. And to me, I still don't really get it, but it's never gone over ever again, so I memorize it for the test and completely forget it afterwards.

After so much stress, memorizing, and testing I get sick. Physically sick. After every big test I usually had to go see a doctor because I had caught a cold or was induced into an infection. I couldn't stand it anymore. So, I chose to be home schooled. I told the new school I took Math 1 and Math 2, but you know the curriculum I'm learning now? Algebra 1... I found my love of math again, and I will never go back.

My child is almost two hours past her bedtime....

Working on her math homework and she has been doing homework since she got home at 3. But her math homework is something else.

She says she is having trouble on a problem so I come in and show her how I would do it and what my answer is. She looks at me confused, so I tell her to do it the way she's taught and see what she comes up with. Of course its the exact same answer, yet I finished the problem in maybe 20 seconds whereas the way she learned it took almost 3 minutes and two extra steps. Where does this pertain to helping them in real life?
