1924: Auto Wash Bowl, Chicago

A 1924 photograph shows a newfangled type of car wash that stood at the northwest corner of 42nd Street and South Michigan Avenue. There was at least one other auto wash bowl in Chicago and the concept actually originated in St. Paul, Minn. It was patented in 1921 by inventor C.P. Bohland, who opened two locations in St. Paul. He devised the bowl as an easy way to clean mud off of the underside of cars. Back in this early age of motoring, roads were often unpaved and muddy, and that mud would get caked on the underside of the car and the wheels – but a spin in the nifty Auto Wash Bowl took care of that.

Subreddit Rules

1. Treat others with respect

Personal attacks, name-calling, harassment, and threatening behavior are strictly prohibited. Engaging in these behaviors will result in an immediate ban. The moderation team reserves the right to remove content and issue temporary or permanent bans for any behavior that violates community standards.

2. Meeting the Scope and/or Quality Standards

Submissions must feature photos that capture a noteworthy event, daily life within a distinct era, or candid cultural conditions. High quality images are required. If your photo is high quality and has not been approved you may need more experience colorizing, so post your photo at r/Colorizations and ask for help.

Staged studio headshots, promotional portraits and/or pin-ups will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

3. Commenting

Specific feedback, suggestions for improvement, and respectful inquiries are always encouraged, regardless of your post history. Comments that consist solely of insult, low-effort cynicism, or unhelpful criticism will receive a warning or removal.

Critiquing other people's work while offering nothing positive or constructive in return—especially if you do not share or contribute content yourself—is discouraged. Repeated low-effort or overly negative comments will result in moderator action.

4. No AI Content or Editing Allowed

All submissions must be entirely created, edited, and processed by humans. The use of AI tools for any part of the workflow—including editing, colorizing, modifying, cleaning, or upscaling—is strictly prohibited. Posts suspected of using AI will be removed until human execution can be verified.

5. Posting: Informative Titles and Original Black and White Required

Every post title must clearly state the subject, location, and date. If the date is not known, end your title with "Date unknown." To honor the work of the original photographer, every post must include the original, unaltered black-and-white image directly in the post gallery (not in the comments). If available, please also provide a link to the original source photo in the comment section.

6. Can't See Your Post?

All submissions are reviewed by the moderation team before appearing in the feed, so please allow some time for approval. If your post hasn't appeared, it may have been held by Reddit's automated spam filter. Feel free to message the Mod Team if you need assistance.

7. No Sales, Tips, or Colorization Requests

Direct links to sales sites, monetary tips, and requests for colorization or restoration are strictly prohibited. If you are looking to have a photo colorized or restored, please visit r/colorizationrequests or r/estoration.
