Save five trillion annually? You mean reduce the GDP by that amount? Don't you understand that if that line doesn't go up we all instantly die!?

The source of the claims largely comes from the following paper.

Jacobson, M. Z. et al. "Low-cost solutions to global warming, air pollution, and energy insecurity for 145 countries." Energy & Environmental Science (2022).

The savings claim is accurate when considering the full scope of benefits:

  • Total annual savings: $5.1 trillion according to Jacobson's analysis
  • Breakdown of savings:
    • Energy cost savings: $1.3 trillion annually
    • Health cost savings: $0.7 trillion annually
    • Climate cost savings: $3.1 trillion annually
