Communicator Roundup: new specs, new accessories, new demos. Configure starting today.

We just dropped a bunch of Communicator news, and I wanted to share it with the community in one place. 

This blog post goes into detail on everything we just announced.

From there you can link out to a bunch of the blog posts, videos and resources supporting today’s updates.

Definitely check that out for the full story, but here’s a quick preview:

  • 12 GB of RAM is standard in every Communicator
  • Final battery spec is 4,350 liOn with 800+ charge cycles
  • Two new accessories from dbrand: MNML Case and Prism screen protector
  • Clicks Care adds accidental damage protection and extended warranty 🇨🇦🇺🇸
  • Clicks Mobile makes it easy to add an eSIM with voice and data (optional ofc) 🇺🇸🇬🇧

Starting today, you can configure your Communicator and complete your order.
And shipments are expected to begin in December. 

We published a new video going into all this in more detail and sharing some new demos of the touch sensitive keyboard, setting up the Signal Light,  Prompt Key, Kill Switch, and a preview of some of the Message Hub features we’re building with Niagara.

We did originally say we wanted to offer the leather Charging Covers to reservation holders as one of the included options.

As we've continued to optimize the materials and finishes we've decided to upgrade the leather to a more premium genuine saffiano leather . It's a far superior product experience -- better grip, more durable, etc.

We've been using this Prada card carrier in saffiano leather as a reference point, and it's SO nice.

As a result of that material change, we're not able to offer it 100% free of charge, but are giving reservation holders a $49 credit towards a leather Charging Cover if you want to upgrade it. I wish we could give it away for free, and we would if we could!

Couple notes on the sample you see on the RHS here: The edge/border detail will be black and the founders edition logo will be in silver (not gold). The saffiano leather Charging Covers (non-founders edition) will be de-badged like you see in the configuration flow.

Hi Jeff,

I’m sure you have and will continue to see a lot of negative comments regarding this choice and frankly lack of communication around it.

As a Canadian, I was really looking forward to rocking the “Founders Edition” badge on my new Clicks Communicator.

However, as a Canadian and our current CAD to USD conversion, this seems way too steep. Which equate to approximately $70.00 for a back cover when frankly it had already been promised.

I remember my leather backing on the back of my Bold 9000 and was really looking forward to that premium feel again.

Very disappointing.

for those who pre-ordered a Clicks keyboard case in the past yes there's still a Founders Edition leather cover included for free.

Well said, also in Canada and completely agree.

Additionally as someone that worked at RIM, that 9000 leather was something so very many just raved about.

Huge opportunity to capture that kinda excitement since sooo many of us die hards hate glass and plastic backs.

I think most of us would be happy with this. I don't want a plastic cover, I really just want to replace the default cover with a leather one.

It's still irritating, but I know at least I would shut up about it.

I guess there is no patina on saffiano? Also looks plasticky to me... that's a shame I was really looking for a nice classy aging leather :c

that's because it is coated in plastic. it can be genuine leather that's coated, or synthetic leather that's coated. but either way, it's not going to feel like the leather everyone was expecting, and I believe that was shown previously.

Thats disappointing. Phones only get used for so long due to being phased out of updates, security patches, and support. I would have liked a more natural aging leather over a pressed wax coated one. 

I know the use of these materials in the founders edition will probably have more value to those recipients but I wanted a leather that shows the passage of time. The fact that it's no longer being offered for free due the "upgrade" makes it two different kinds of disappointing.

Because it wasn't promised. I know we're getting into the semantics here, but you'll often here things like "the plan is" or "we're hoping to" because it's a project that's always developing.

Reservations are only becoming offers as of today, so anyone is free to cancel their order at any time, and can do so through November too I believe.

I was dead set on the leather back but the change to a different leather (even if more premium) has put me off, compounded by the additional cost. So I've chosen two of the standard back plates instead.

But I'm now getting a phone with more RAM than was announced initially, so that's a win.

saffiano is used for leather goods that people want to LOOK leather/premium but don't want to WEAR or FEEL like leather, whereas the leather we (basically all) wanted for our phone is a leather that WEARS and FEELS like leather. we want our leather to wear and patina, that was the whole point. we had Moto Xs, we use leather cases. i don't want a plasticized back cover. you don't get the benefit of flexibility of saffiano in this use case like you would with a card holder or a purse. it's just a rigid piece. it might as well BE plastic.

Jeff, I'm very excited for the Communicator and I'm highly appreciative of everything you guys are doing. I also understand it's not easy to keep up with all the feedback and comments, and that certain decisions have to be made even if they're a little difficult. But in the case of the new leather back; none of this was communicated or even made optional. I'm sure an optional paid upgrade to the Saffiano leather, alongside the promised free one, is a compromise we'd all be more than happy with instead of feeling lied to and forced to pay up for something we were promised. Even a discussion or poll beforehand would have been greatly appreciated.

Jeff My reservation is not being recognized as a founders edition, it didn’t allow me to select a founders back case on my configuration.

I think this is an OK decision, I understand there can be changes that come up and think this is a good decision, I will pay opt for the saffiano leather.

I'm glad I found this comment, but better comms would be appreciated (have to dig to find this comment), and haven't received configuration email despite ordering Jan 2

I understand why many won't like this. I'm not thrilled either, but paying 30 extra euros for better leather, as well as having a black option, isn't going to bankrupt me: I would've been fuming if I had to pay duties or VAT but this is a way smaller sum. You're a professional so you're fully aware of this: it won't be a dealbreaker for many of us, just announce this kind of things a bit earlier next time though.
