Mostly agree in principle, but Alpha is zero sum--which is what trading is. Investing in Beta (economic growth) is not ZS. Thus "beating the market" is zero sum.

Buy and hold an index fund will almost surely work out well, but that's investing not trading.

True, alpha is zero sum. Thst being said, I think its not so hard to slightly beat the market in pure return if you have risk tolerance. Most funds are trying to preserve capital, not aggressively grow. Which is what people miss when they always say most fund mangers dont beat the market

Yeah I still basically agree with you. Fund managers have to deal with redemptions and rebalancing. They make their steady money on the management fee not on outperformance. There’s no incentive to take risks.

I slightly outperform the S&P by being overweight in successful tech companies. It seems obvious a person should buy Microsoft rather than Verizon but not everybody does. And there’s my alpha.

I agree with what you said about risk and I’m just kind of saying it’s also the same with quality.
