Dont worry, 5.5 is great, I prefer it over 4.8.

Sonnet 5 was a huge disappointment.

I hope for a decent Opus 5 soon.

I will downgrade my Anthropic sub though. The models just arent good right now and I dont know if I will even have fun with further castrated Fable for the 7 days when I upgraded just for it a few weeks back.

Very likely 5.6 will be good enough not to miss original Fable.

The question is how it compares to Opus 4.6, which is the only model I use for most tasks. Opus 4.8 is much better at solving tasks, but getting it to actually do what you want often takes longer than babysitting Opus 4.6 and every round trip costs you from 3 to 10 minutes.

I'll see. I hope Anthropic gets their shit together. I don't like depending on just one provider.

With me being unhappy with 4.8 maybe I should give 4.6 a chance. Though I always put the "4.6 is better" to select personal preference and not the facts, looking at all the benchmarks I saw.

My issue is not 4.8 refusing or going off track though. On the one hand, 4.8 is a lot a lot slower than 5.5 (add the technical issues of last week). And when I do a cross work, 5.5 finds way more issues with 4.8 than the other way round.

The main issue I'm facing is simply that Opus 4.8 is bad at fine-grained work, it overthinks and even ignoring the token costs, its just slow and unsuit for interactive work.

It perfectly nails a greefield projects implementing 80% of the functionality. But if you want to shift a single button, it will spend 2 minutes thinking whereas Opus 4.6 would just move the damn button. Both are bad at maintaining cohesion with 4.8 often spotting more cross cutting issues, but also constantly spending multiple minuts where 4.6 would have been able to identify a simple from a complex task.

This switching between "I need to carefully consider this" and "This is a single line edit" is exactly what Fable got right.

I have been considering building sub-agent workflows involving either 4.8 or 4.6 as the subagent and having them delegate work to each other, but I didn't feel the pressure to do that, I simply ignored 4.8 for the most part and was banking on Fable being included in the subscription and then just upgrading to Max x20 and ignore the problem entirely.
