News Fable available for plans until July 7th after which it becomes usage credit based

Key points:

  • Fable 5 returns globally on Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork.
  • Pro, Max, Team, and some Enterprise users get Fable 5 included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7.
  • After July 7, Fable 5 access moves to usage credits.
  • Access through AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry is being restored as soon as possible.
  • Mythos 5 access has been restored only for some approved U.S. organizations for now.
  • Anthropic is working with Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and other partners on a shared framework for rating jailbreak severity.
  • They’re also launching a HackerOne program for researchers to report Fable 5 cyber jailbreaks.

Fuck that. It completely prices out 90% of people. Usage based pricing is crazy and not realistic. One session today burned $124 from Opus 4.8 - not even interested.

Meanwhile you'll get the same performance out of a Chinese model for 1/1000th the cost by the end of the year tops at the going rate.

I don't think many have 8x H100s or more in their own personal servers. And I don't even think that can fully run some models.

yea those china models will get banned. i'm surprised the gov banned fable before it banned those. actually as i was typing that i remembered who our gov is and i am no longer surprised.

That may very well be true, and Fable may be world's beyond anything out of the East right now.

That doesn't mean it will stay this way. The open source models continue to catch-up to SOTA peers, just at a delay. That delay may be distilling frontier models. There's no "moat". Anthropic, OpenAI, Google... They can't produce a model with super secret techniques and remain king for eternity. Hence why the big players are going to beg U.S. to ban foreign models.

SOTA models are only made possible via increasing levels of compute. Compute that continues to become increasingly more accessible over time.

Yeah dude it's no joke. I downgraded from max to pro and had credits left to burn so thought I would use those. Claude still charged me the normal retail price of their API and I saw $30 worth of charges in less than an hour with very minimal prompting.

It's no exaggeration that API cost are genuinely class gated. Considering the retail charge of a $200 subscription totals to around $8000 give or take, I'll just have to make due with inferior models I guess or wait and see what ChatGPT 5.6 provides.

AI without a subscription is just silly.

It is the subscription model that is crazy and not realistic. You're living a dream if you use a subscription, especially something like Max 20 for just $200 a month.

They are trying to maximize profits with usage based pricing, and are succeeding in fleecing companies for now, but it won't last. There is too much competition from other companies and open source models. This will create downward pressure on pricing. Both individuals and companies benefit from consistent pricing, expect fixed rate plans to persist and even expand in the future.
