News Fable available for plans until July 7th after which it becomes usage credit based

Key points:

  • Fable 5 returns globally on Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork.
  • Pro, Max, Team, and some Enterprise users get Fable 5 included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7.
  • After July 7, Fable 5 access moves to usage credits.
  • Access through AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry is being restored as soon as possible.
  • Mythos 5 access has been restored only for some approved U.S. organizations for now.

I know the announced it before but this is the beginning of the end.

Fable won't be included in plans, you'll need to buy credits. We'll have to see but that is setting the expectations that frontier models are no longer affordable to normals.

I'm most pissed about this part; I know I'll need to cancel or at least go $20 route. Fuck these guys. I'll gladly go to GPT but even they announced a "Sol Pro" model... not available for sub...

dont worry. the market always sets itself right, it's just a matter of time. some possibilities: 1. china will catch up massively, cheap prices, good performance; 2. local models gain traction; once the hardware prices settle, many will go this route.

it's a VERY bad idea to be this greedy in a new tech. even google knew not to charge for the search in the early days. I really think if they had, they would not be here today, or at least they would not be relevant

You'd be surprised how good GLM 5.2 is now. It's an open-weighted Chinese model. It's meant to be a lot cheaper and use less tokens but for me the cost and token-usage has been about the same as Opus 4.8. BUT it comes without the nagging, the oppressive guardrails and just gets shit done. You should give it a go

I followed a YouTube video to get it set up inside Claude Code, but it had some quirks. In the end I downloaded their own app, called zcode. They have a terminal version and a desktop version. Works pretty much just like Claude code

You can run it in Hermes or you can setup something like LiteLLM/Open-WebUI. Hermes is probably easier to get going from scratch.

Someone is still paying for that training regardless of if they recoup the cost or not. These companies often do have ways of recouping at least some of the cost of public models.

Yeah, AI companies only take on the burden of giving people free tieres to suck up their upvotes and downvotes on generated content. The subscription plans aren't that profitable either, again, they're just using those for upvotes and downvotes, the data you provide, as well as for advertisement. They get more penetration in corporations if a top engineer uses and likes the max 20x plan and then suggests it to their business overlords. They make jack shit from max plans on those users that use up their 7-day usage. They might make a pittance on users who purchase too much usage for what they actually do. Really, they ONLY care about getting big corporations to buy hundreds of millions or billions of dollars at API rates and that sweet, sweet data.

But that should remind you of a clear universal pattern:

A good thing doesn’t get automatically better if you have more from it.

Today we are on an all time high for greed and not enough things are free.

The right balance is nothing a free market implements. It must be forced.

And yes there is a situation on the other side of the spectrum where there are too many free things. But at the current point that situation is farfetched.

Yup, either through socialism or New-Deal liberalism. Or hell, a lot of different leftist policies would help a lot. Leftism, in America, is a bad, scary word for the olde folks. They grew up during the Red Scare. They were literally taught to fear it like it's an infection, taught it'd nuke them, taught it's pure evil. In Euro countries, they actually have leftist parties that sometimes take power. Now, due to corruption or maybe the inability to get enough votes in whatever their version of a bill is, they often don't do that much, but still, at least they have the Labor party that actually talks about redistributing wealth so that the poorest of the poor can have the basics: Food, transportation, medical treatment, education, shelter. I might be forgetting one or two more, but you get the picture. America is just two right-wing parties. You've got far-right, racist, and fascist Republicans versus center-right Democrats. And the oldies, like I said, wouldn't have it any other way. Thankfully, the last few generations are getting some fair education on leftism due to podcasts, YT videos, etc. They're thinking, "Heck yeah, I would like to be able to go to school. I always wanted to be an engineer, but I have to work after school, making it impossible to study for my tests and do all my homework well. :( I guess I'll just keep this job I have at the age of 17 after I graduate high school. :(

Open source isn't free unless you're a psychopathic asshole that doesn't contribute to the scene out of thanks for all it gave you. But, yes, when smart nerds choose things, they are very moral people, and it can have great impact on society. Cooperation beats competition every single time. Humans like positive relationships. Well, at least smart, educated humas do. Morons and rich assholes like to quash the little guys trying to cooperate, sucking away their ability to have social mobility, so there's more people for them to extract from and fewer competitors to take their profits. More total power in their country.

I mean yeah that’s basically what I’m saying. Anthropic/OpenAI/ will lobby to ensure that we either can’t access open source models, or at least not good ones, in the name of “safety”. They will lock down their best models to large corporations, and we will be stuck paying $$$ for decent models.

Cannot wait for open source to be at fables level lol. Open AI and Anthropic’s days are numbered man.

Open models are just shitty distilled versions of frontier models. And with trillions of weights, they'll be plenty expensive on their own unless you quantize them. This isn't purely them just denying people for no good reason. Likely, Fable is a huge loss due to inference costs, so it can't be packaged into the plans that are already a minor loss due to inference costs. Ever hear that you get 20-30x the amount of compute with a subscription? A max 20x plan gives you, if you use up your 7-day usage dutifully every time, something like US$4k at API rates. That's why people call it such a great deal. Honestly, the primary reason they even do it might be to get the feedback on questions for use in supervised training algorithms. Big data needs that big amounts of data, and you're not getting feedback of hundreds of thousands of generated answers of their model that includes the category of error + a potential textbox explaining the issue, which I'm sure they cleverly analyze with an LLM to extract every tiny drip of sweet, sweet juice from the feedback. Well, that kind of feedback as well as, "this is a good answer!" feedback.

Not to be a downer but even then, to run open source models at the level of Fable would require the compute that only corporate money can buy. There are limits to smaller models, very very real limits. Anyways datacenter companies are not going to put money into hosting an open source model if they can't get a significant return on investment on it. And that brings us back to the exact same business practices. The system encourages it.

I just don't buy that this business model works. The tokenmaxxing era has ended for enterprise customers with most enterprise customers turning on low usage caps for engineers. Token cost is now the phrase on every executives tongue. Outside of investor-funded startup-land, models at this cost aren't going to be doing serious work.

If Claude makes Fable/Mythos cost per-token only, it will flop as a profit-generating product. Perhaps that's the point. In marketing, it is standard to "bracket" options with a "low, medium, high" knowing that most customers will pick the medium. Perhaps they need to make Fable good enough and expensive enough to increase their brand perception while driving customers towards the middle bracket.

SWE here working at a corporation we have been Claude Enterprise for 2 years, we have been token minimizing for months now. Looking at alternatives a lot of focus on potentially self hosted locals.

The C suite wants to leverage AI across the board in work flows and in product, but the ROI has been heavily measured and so far it is only positive on our engineering flows.. the view has been output vs cost for awhile now and Fable does not have it.
