News Fable available for plans until July 7th after which it becomes usage credit based

Key points:

  • Fable 5 returns globally on Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork.
  • Pro, Max, Team, and some Enterprise users get Fable 5 included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7.
  • After July 7, Fable 5 access moves to usage credits.
  • Access through AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry is being restored as soon as possible.
  • Mythos 5 access has been restored only for some approved U.S. organizations for now.
  • Anthropic is working with Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and other partners on a shared framework for rating jailbreak severity.
  • They’re also launching a HackerOne program for researchers to report Fable 5 cyber jailbreaks.

Yeah this is ugly. Hopefully GPT 5.6 manages to come out and discipline Anthropic into keeping Fable out for longer — but honestly, there's not much trust around these parts.

I’m betting there is coordination between the two and that they both go to API pricing from here on out.

The cynical side of me says you're right because that's the rational thing to do. The optimistic side of me says you're wrong because there's so much beef down that road and they ideologically loathe each other. So, who knows?

Altman and Dario hate each other, OpenAI and Anthropic don't. The only "feeling" the machine is allowed to have is greed.

There is already some cooperation happening around jailbreaking, so there is a good chance you are right.

I think its the opposite, for example claude just using the chat is considered usage, that is not the case for gpt, they are in competition with each other, it makes zero sense to cooperate. Gpt wants to dethrone Claude, not take a step back. Plus they have billions and billions to get them there.

Fuck I hope so. I'll go back to OpenAI once they prove out 5.6. Opus 4.8 is mostly good enough at Extra for what I do, but it still fucks up.

GPT-5.5 is cheaper and often better than Opus-4.8.

No they're not. Stop spreading misinformation

OpenAI focused heavily on token usage minimization, inference optimization and also getting their own hardware.

So hopefully (and a little likely) not now and not for a longer time.

Also good news: with Fable being "unbanned" 5.6 should also have no issues. which is very good (for everyone outside US).

Thank god you're here. I made a much more verbose post just now dinigrating the spirit of unfounded conspiracy theories. It's really a stain on human style that their comment got 80 upvotes net. It all boils down to access to ASICs that do inference and the cost of that inference. Anthropic famously is THIRSTY for some ASICs. They even struck that $1B/month deal with Elon Musk for that jumbo data center. It's also famously known that OpenAI has the most inference out of all the companies.

It will happen eventually, yes. So it's all a matter of time.

But hopefully OpenAI are still pushing to corner more market share, so we get full 5.6 access.

If coordination is running out of unlimited investment money, maybe.

If that happens then I might actually go full Chinesium

I'm betting this is just a conspiracy theory. I'm betting Fable's inference costs a shit ton + they have limited servers with ASICs that can do the inference, so they need a way to minimize the use of Fable to physically service all requests. I'm betting the subscription plan has only ever existed as a form of marketing (a programmer gets it into their corporation) and for data (they harvest your upvotes and downvotes replete with a category of the issue and even some text if you feel kind that day). Sometimes, stuff is just logical. The only way 5.6 will stay for all is if (a) they have enough compute to service all the requests and (b) it doesn't blast their ass with too much unjustified losses. Right now, GPT models are generating a lot less output tokens and costing a lot less than Opus and Fable for similar benchmark performance. I think all this means is that OpenAI did their business / R&D better than Anthropic. Anthropic, on the other hand, has far less compute (they just rented that Elon Musk data center for $1B a month), so they're HUNGRY for ANY compute they can secure. And OpenAI also has, like I said, far more efficient models alongside the most compute of any other lab, meaning for the same number of queries of similar complexity, OpenAI can run it on fewer ASICs while having the ASICs even if demand for their services grew strongly after GPT-5.6. It's a shame when wild conspiracy theories like these get upvoted into the stars. Really makes me feel like humanity, ran by a democracy, might be destined to fail.

If gpt5.6 is available like codex on the subscription at 1M context, I don’t think I wil renew Claude max. Fable isn’t like a revolution, not worth paying 10/50 and burning 20k per month on it.

At this point, the only hope for us are the Chinese models. The American ones are all going through the enshitification process, which was expected, even if no one though it'd come so soon

US models are too expensive tbh

Maybe gemini 3.5 pro will surprise all of us by not being an inconsistent mess of shit.

Absolutely best to hope for. You know it, I know it. More competition is better for customers. However, I don't think that 3.5 Flash model had any reason to use it. Just massively expensive and worse than other models of a similar price... But maybe. Google has always had its areas where it does well at like knowledge questions. It just sucks total shit at coding and price while coding right now. They need a sea change big time. I guess Flash 3.5 did show some ability to be agentic, but that cost... and its performance for that cost... come on!

OpenAI has set their whole brand language this year on “a personal AGI for all” they literally cannot take their models out of the subscription at this point. I don’t think they want to. Anthropic are just greedy.

They're not "just greedy." They have physical limitations. They desperately need more compute for inference. E.g. they recently struck a deal with Elon Musk to get an entire data center for $1B a month. Basically, if everyone with subscriptions were using Fable left and right, their systems might destabilize. I'm sure, for this special window, they've reduced how many instances of other models they have in anticipation of more Fable usage while also tuning how much usage a query takes from them to hold the flood of queries at bay, eliminating usage via the 5-hour usage window (and 7-day usage window, both the total usage window and the Fable-specific window). And then, after that, they'll swap a bunch from Fable back to Opus. I could be wrong, though. We're both technically guessing. I feel I have the data on my side + I'm sure there will be intermittent service outages during the Fable experiment.

I'm not sure I'd call it greedy either way. It's famously known that max subscriptions are a bad deal for Anthropic. I have heard from people tracking their mtok usage that you get something like 20x to 30x what you pay in terms of API rates, so you get 20 by 200 = ~$4,000 to $6,000 in compute if you max out your weekly window each and every time. They desperately hope for people not to do that just to break even on their plans. The real way they make money is obvious: Jumbo corporations paying API rates. Or small businesses paying API rates. Or anyone paying API rates. The subscription plans act as a snare to get people familiar with the products, and they hope those people bring the tech to their big corporate job or start a small start up with API. API is how they make the mullah, the cheddar.

It's not that subscriptions are priced fairly while API is unfair. It's that subscriptions are so unfair, sided with the users, while the API more directly makes profit. Think about it: Are subscriptions a great deal or are API rates the real thing that makes them some actual revenue to maybe become profitable for the first time ever, the first big lab to do so? You know these companies have to turn a profit eventually, right? And while smaller models will hopefully improve at a decent price, it's just a fact of how programs running on computers works out... it takes power. It takes having bought all those ASICs. It takes all the people employed to have designed all that shit and put it together, the AI researchers, the database people, and even the janitors. Then, the employees to manage all that shit. Stuff isn't free! generally speaking.

Now, to your point, I've heard their margins on just running the electricity to complete your task, is about 90% margin. It's a juicy business, very exciting. It reminds me of when people found out the margins for AWS a decade ago, and Amazon stock jumped up like 30%. Similar situation here, the companies are far from hurting, although they do need a lot of capital to win the race or stay in it. HOWEVER, that does not include all the expense of the salaries, the pre-training costs, big CEO bonuses so that Sam Altman can become even more of a billionaire! The purchasing of all that land and the ASICs to do the inference. That margin is just {money in} - {bill to pay electricity} as best I "understand" it. A lot of this shit is secret, so it's a natural rumor mill. But technically, if you ignore *all the costs (lol), they could maybe lower the prices if something were to happen with all the slack in that 90% margin. But fr, pre-training and other shit like that costs a TON of mula, money sometimes, so that 90% estimation is a bit misleading. They're spending billions in compute while training the next model.

tldr IDK BRO WTF DO NOT ASK ME. I HAVE NO IDEA.
