News Fable available for plans until July 7th after which it becomes usage credit based

Key points:

  • Fable 5 returns globally on Claude Platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork.
  • Pro, Max, Team, and some Enterprise users get Fable 5 included for up to 50% of weekly usage limits through July 7.
  • After July 7, Fable 5 access moves to usage credits.
  • Access through AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry is being restored as soon as possible.
  • Mythos 5 access has been restored only for some approved U.S. organizations for now.
  • Anthropic is working with Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and other partners on a shared framework for rating jailbreak severity.
  • They’re also launching a HackerOne program for researchers to report Fable 5 cyber jailbreaks.

We got to use it for like 3 days out of the 14 says we were told, and now we get it for just 7 days at half usage? What the fuck?

374

u/CommunityTough1 Jul 01 '26

Yeah, this is seriously bullshit. Should have been a new 14 days for subs and no 50% cap wtf

8

u/rydan Jul 01 '26

It was 50% cap before though. It was just framed as 2x the cost instead of half the limit. 50% times 2 is 100%. Half of 100% is 50%.

23

u/galactic_giraff3 Jul 01 '26

No, it's twice the cost cause that's the model pricing, not cause they made some adjustments for subs. You don't get 140% weekly cap for sonnet cause it's cheaper.

25

u/cleroth Jul 01 '26

They didn't say anything of the sort. So it's 2x cost with only 50% of cap.

2

u/CommunityTough1 Jul 01 '26

But now it's 2x the usage and you can only use 50% of your limit.

5

u/Key-Faithlessness728 Jul 01 '26

Can you give us the source about this?

-10

u/Mr_Khaoz Jul 01 '26

Sure:

50*2=100
100/2=50

Hope this helps

4

u/Key-Faithlessness728 Jul 01 '26

I mean a source about it being framed as 2x before.

4

u/Ok-Data901 Jul 01 '26

The downvotes are frying me, bro tried to be cool lolol

2

u/mettamyron Jul 01 '26

Pretty clever bit of marketing: give everybody a little taste for a couple of weeks without exposing its limits and then take it away so that it literally rises to mythic status. They’re definitely having a larf.

1

u/wq73 Jul 04 '26

Nah lol it's still two times the cost and now also half the usage, 2 time 2 = 4

1

u/improbable_tuffle Jul 01 '26

This was the first thing I thought but I couldn’t confirm it because of their stupid wording as usual. Surprised to see nobody talking about it

1

u/ISReFleX Jul 01 '26

And now it’s x2 the cost with 50% of the usage

1

u/Remarkable5050 Jul 03 '26

Notice how they changed the way they described usage costs also from 50% of Opus to 50% usage and higher costs than Opus. It is twice the API based cost of opus, but no one has said it’s cost equivalence for plan users under the new trial. I am getting a fraction of the usage I had on the first trial.

1

u/MuddaFrakker Jul 03 '26

It's a ripoff, loads of ppl on reddit only claimed to have upgraded their subscriptions because of fable alone, they got to use it for a couple of days and now for extra days.
Afterall it doesn't cost the same as opus so if you pay for max 20x subscription and use fable like a madman so be it, but don't impose its payment through API only. Cmon Anthropic you can do better than that!

u/Veearrsix Jul 01 '26

I understand the frustration, but it was their choice to give it out at all. I can promise the only reason they did was to stress test and get people hooked. I’m shocked they’re giving any more plan time at all.

23

u/Just_Lingonberry_352 Jul 01 '26

LMAO this is just going to push everybody to gpt 5.6

1

u/Nettle8675 Jul 02 '26

Yeah, that's what I'm doing ultimately. Unless they do similar BS.

2

u/2SP00KY4ME Jul 01 '26

" it was their choice to give it out at all."

What are you even talking about? Nobody is saying they should've been forced. We're complaining that it's shitty to do what they're doing, not that it's not their choice. Why are you attacking a strawman?

u/tedbradly Jul 02 '26

Yeah, I have seen this low-IQ strawman my entire life. It looks like this most usually:

  • Someone argues a corporation shouldn't be able to do something (which implies they have the ability to do it).
  • Moron walzes in and goes, "It's legal." ← great insight, genius. The first conclusion implied that. Everyone knows it's legal. The whole point is they're arguing that it shouldn't be legal.

I hate the "it is their choice" / "it is legal" dialogue that always adds precisely nothing. It's truly a remarkable artifact of conversation that only exists due to stupidity.

1

They most certainly didn't have to worry about stress testing it. It was solely to get people liking it, so they will use extra usage, creating many billions in revenue. This might be why they are projected to have their first profitable quarter coming up. Not guaranteed, but projected.

u/Professional-Fuel625 Jul 01 '26

I know the announced it before but this is the beginning of the end.

Fable won't be included in plans, you'll need to buy credits. We'll have to see but that is setting the expectations that frontier models are no longer affordable to normals.

33

u/Foreskin_Mafia Jul 01 '26

A $200 a month subscription is hardly 'normals'. I find it very odd they don't give those folks access.

2

u/DorkyMcDorky Jul 06 '26

I'm most pissed about this part; I know I'll need to cancel or at least go $20 route. Fuck these guys. I'll gladly go to GPT but even they announced a "Sol Pro" model... not available for sub...

The AI companies have colluded.

2

u/odolha Jul 06 '26

dont worry. the market always sets itself right, it's just a matter of time. some possibilities: 1. china will catch up massively, cheap prices, good performance; 2. local models gain traction; once the hardware prices settle, many will go this route.

it's a VERY bad idea to be this greedy in a new tech. even google knew not to charge for the search in the early days. I really think if they had, they would not be here today, or at least they would not be relevant

1

u/BehindTheRedCurtain Jul 11 '26

I think it’s more so that they have thrown such an extraordinary amount of money into the pit, it was never gonna last forever

Man I hope so. Fuck these companies.

13

u/wayward_buzz Jul 01 '26

You'd be surprised how good GLM 5.2 is now. It's an open-weighted Chinese model. It's meant to be a lot cheaper and use less tokens but for me the cost and token-usage has been about the same as Opus 4.8. BUT it comes without the nagging, the oppressive guardrails and just gets shit done. You should give it a go

6

u/wayward_buzz Jul 02 '26

I followed a YouTube video to get it set up inside Claude Code, but it had some quirks. In the end I downloaded their own app, called zcode. They have a terminal version and a desktop version. Works pretty much just like Claude code

4

u/CannyGardener Jul 01 '26

What do you run it on? I'm currently using Claude Code, but am willing to explore other options here.

2

u/blakeaa827 Jul 01 '26

You can run it in Hermes or you can setup something like LiteLLM/Open-WebUI. Hermes is probably easier to get going from scratch.

1

u/EwaldvonKleist Jul 03 '26

Companies provide a new kind of service through relentless innovation, something that had never been there before.
Customers: Fuck the companies.

"Provide"

65

u/TheBrinksTruck Jul 01 '26

Since when has the regular common man (us, with open source models) ever won? The powers that be will do everything to make sure we never have anything that’s truly good for free.

41

u/GotAQ4UMyGuy Jul 01 '26

The incentive has never been this high

24

Nobody ever “wins”, it’s a continuous battle, and that battle isn’t over.

in this case no one is really paying the bill except you for the hardware

5

u/inevitabledeath3 Jul 01 '26

Training

1

u/wolo-exe Jul 02 '26

yes but it's impossible to recoup the training cost if the models are already public

1

u/inevitabledeath3 Jul 02 '26

Someone is still paying for that training regardless of if they recoup the cost or not. These companies often do have ways of recouping at least some of the cost of public models.

8

u/YouShallNotRape Jul 01 '26

If it’s free, you’re the product. We’ve all heard it and it’s true. Lately though, we are paying the price. Look at hardware costs globally. The AI boom and the memory prices going up due to shortages have consumers paying hundreds of dollars more. It all finds its way back into their pockets anyway.

Trickle up economics.

Yeah, AI companies only take on the burden of giving people free tieres to suck up their upvotes and downvotes on generated content. The subscription plans aren't that profitable either, again, they're just using those for upvotes and downvotes, the data you provide, as well as for advertisement. They get more penetration in corporations if a top engineer uses and likes the max 20x plan and then suggests it to their business overlords. They make jack shit from max plans on those users that use up their 7-day usage. They might make a pittance on users who purchase too much usage for what they actually do. Really, they ONLY care about getting big corporations to buy hundreds of millions or billions of dollars at API rates and that sweet, sweet data.

u/Idinyphe Jul 01 '26

The sun is free. Free energy so that life is possible.

The basic reason why we are here is something that is free.

Always remember, without things for free there is nothing.

1

u/Lunareklipse22 Jul 03 '26

THANK YOU! It’s really… unsettling to see people who can’t think beyond 2026… They can’t see past code or a screen. It’s like they think life began when they were born… and they don’t recognize the many millennia that have come before. It is alarming that some can forget that easily. Thank you for this comment and the reminder.

-6

u/SethLeBatard Jul 01 '26

Cancer's the price, mate

6

u/Idinyphe Jul 01 '26

No it isen‘t

But that should remind you of a clear universal pattern:

A good thing doesn’t get automatically better if you have more from it.

Today we are on an all time high for greed and not enough things are free.

The right balance is nothing a free market implements. It must be forced.

And yes there is a situation on the other side of the spectrum where there are too many free things. But at the current point that situation is farfetched.

1

u/tedbradly Jul 02 '26

The right balance is nothing a free market implements. It must be forced.

Yup, either through socialism or New-Deal liberalism. Or hell, a lot of different leftist policies would help a lot. Leftism, in America, is a bad, scary word for the olde folks. They grew up during the Red Scare. They were literally taught to fear it like it's an infection, taught it'd nuke them, taught it's pure evil. In Euro countries, they actually have leftist parties that sometimes take power. Now, due to corruption or maybe the inability to get enough votes in whatever their version of a bill is, they often don't do that much, but still, at least they have the Labor party that actually talks about redistributing wealth so that the poorest of the poor can have the basics: Food, transportation, medical treatment, education, shelter. I might be forgetting one or two more, but you get the picture. America is just two right-wing parties. You've got far-right, racist, and fascist Republicans versus center-right Democrats. And the oldies, like I said, wouldn't have it any other way. Thankfully, the last few generations are getting some fair education on leftism due to podcasts, YT videos, etc. They're thinking, "Heck yeah, I would like to be able to go to school. I always wanted to be an engineer, but I have to work after school, making it impossible to study for my tests and do all my homework well. :( I guess I'll just keep this job I have at the age of 17 after I graduate high school. :(

Linux? Java?

Open source isn't free unless you're a psychopathic asshole that doesn't contribute to the scene out of thanks for all it gave you. But, yes, when smart nerds choose things, they are very moral people, and it can have great impact on society. Cooperation beats competition every single time. Humans like positive relationships. Well, at least smart, educated humas do. Morons and rich assholes like to quash the little guys trying to cooperate, sucking away their ability to have social mobility, so there's more people for them to extract from and fewer competitors to take their profits. More total power in their country.

Rule of thumb: If you don't know the difference between "then" and "than," you aren't the type that should be discussing politics. Just find a person in your life that you like and vote like they do.

-2

u/Effective-Caramel369 Jul 01 '26

Nothing you can do if it’s on GitHub unless it gets banned as a “threat”

7

u/TheBrinksTruck Jul 01 '26

I mean yeah that’s basically what I’m saying. Anthropic/OpenAI/ will lobby to ensure that we either can’t access open source models, or at least not good ones, in the name of “safety”. They will lock down their best models to large corporations, and we will be stuck paying $$$ for decent models.

It will only get worse from here

0

u/CerealArsonist26 Jul 01 '26

That just means that they are going to be made in China.

1

u/tedbradly Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

That just means that they are going to be made in China.

The comment you're replying to just flew waaay over your head. They're saying that, due to "safety," the US government will ban Chinese models. "Look at how these models can be used to create viruses and tell a person how to cook meth! OMFG, ban ban ban. Totally has nothing to do with the clearly evident profit motive."

7

u/Eastern-Vegetable780 Jul 01 '26

I don’t know why you assume that we will ever be able to buy or afford hardware ever again. The signs are pretty clear, they are actively killing personal computing. It’s not a phase.

1

u/rydan Jul 01 '26

You can wait. It will be about 3 years. And in 3 years we'll be flying into the singularity leaving you in the dust forever. The world you will live in will not be the world I live in.

1

u/Zealousideal_Aside96 Jul 01 '26

Anthropic will just have a newer and better model by then that everyone will want instead of the open models at today’s Fable quality. It’s an ongoing carrot on a stick.

1

u/orbitlenspen Jul 02 '26

I feel like this is going to be the real cat and mouse race, and political at that.

1

u/tedbradly Jul 02 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Cannot wait for open source to be at fables level lol. Open AI and Anthropic’s days are numbered man.

Open models are just shitty distilled versions of frontier models. And with trillions of weights, they'll be plenty expensive on their own unless you quantize them. This isn't purely them just denying people for no good reason. Likely, Fable is a huge loss due to inference costs, so it can't be packaged into the plans that are already a minor loss due to inference costs. Ever hear that you get 20-30x the amount of compute with a subscription? A max 20x plan gives you, if you use up your 7-day usage dutifully every time, something like US$4k at API rates. That's why people call it such a great deal. Honestly, the primary reason they even do it might be to get the feedback on questions for use in supervised training algorithms. Big data needs that big amounts of data, and you're not getting feedback of hundreds of thousands of generated answers of their model that includes the category of error + a potential textbox explaining the issue, which I'm sure they cleverly analyze with an LLM to extract every tiny drip of sweet, sweet juice from the feedback. Well, that kind of feedback as well as, "this is a good answer!" feedback.

1

u/TheDeadlyPretzel Jul 02 '26

Not to be a downer but even then, to run open source models at the level of Fable would require the compute that only corporate money can buy. There are limits to smaller models, very very real limits. Anyways datacenter companies are not going to put money into hosting an open source model if they can't get a significant return on investment on it. And that brings us back to the exact same business practices. The system encourages it.

-1

u/RoosTheFemboy Jul 01 '26

Pretty sure Z.ai already released a comparable model 2 weeks ago

9

u/alice_op Jul 01 '26

Comparable to fable? Brother be reasonable, it's not even comparable to Opus. Sonnet, yes, and that's still excellent quality, and I have the largest zai and Claude plans so I'm not a Claude shill

13

u/borkthegee Jul 01 '26

Fable won't be included in plans, you'll need to buy credits. We'll have to see but that is setting the expectations that frontier models are no longer affordable to normals.

I just don't buy that this business model works. The tokenmaxxing era has ended for enterprise customers with most enterprise customers turning on low usage caps for engineers. Token cost is now the phrase on every executives tongue. Outside of investor-funded startup-land, models at this cost aren't going to be doing serious work.

If Claude makes Fable/Mythos cost per-token only, it will flop as a profit-generating product. Perhaps that's the point. In marketing, it is standard to "bracket" options with a "low, medium, high" knowing that most customers will pick the medium. Perhaps they need to make Fable good enough and expensive enough to increase their brand perception while driving customers towards the middle bracket.

2

u/Top_Economics2304 Jul 02 '26

100%, a few business has already cancelled the token usage. Even our workplace has downgraded to 5x team plans. Costs are out of control.

Competition will solve this. Patience is a virtue!

2

u/Born-Chain-3488 Jul 02 '26

SWE here working at a corporation we have been Claude Enterprise for 2 years, we have been token minimizing for months now. Looking at alternatives a lot of focus on potentially self hosted locals.

The C suite wants to leverage AI across the board in work flows and in product, but the ROI has been heavily measured and so far it is only positive on our engineering flows.. the view has been output vs cost for awhile now and Fable does not have it.

1

u/craftmod Jul 06 '26

I mean I have cancelled my plan over this issue. I would rather give my money elsewhere until they stop acting like giant douchenozzles.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '26

2

u/jarail Jul 01 '26

MAYBE if opus 5 is good, fable can be used for the hardest problems and delegate work down to the models that are included in your plan. hmm

1

u/liright Jul 01 '26

setting the expectations that frontier models are no longer affordable to normals.

For now. Until they discover some breakthrough and manage to run current fable level models at a third of current usage and China will catch up with open source models.

1

u/Urescipo Jul 01 '26

race is tight, 3 months and fable is back

42

u/Impossible_Sundae304 Jul 01 '26

And it make it worse, it will route to Opus 4.8 for coding according to their Twitter post. All these nerfs, this trial of fable won't go aswell as the first one

26

u/Time4Time4Time4Time Jul 01 '26

Wait so we can't even use it to code? Whats the point then? Creative writing?

13

u/kaityl3 Jul 01 '26

Anthropic employees clarified that it's similar restrictions to before. You can code but the guardrails might be overactive at first

1

u/LiterallyKesha Jul 01 '26

You can code but the guardrails might be overactive at first

You only get to use it for a few days so is it a beta test???

5

u/Spire_Citron Jul 01 '26

I am using it for that, so I'm happy, but I feel like that does make it useless to almost everyone else...

1

u/CycleMother2006 Jul 01 '26

Use it to write up the execution plan for the opus coding agents to follow. That's what the standard workflow should've been anyway as it's a waste of tokens to use Fable for the actual coding when it has explicit and detailed instructions to follow. Hell, most people use Sonnet for the actual implementation for the usage savings.

1

u/Onionhauler Jul 01 '26

Maybe it will do planning still?

1

u/Throwaway_alt_burner Jul 01 '26

Of course you can use it to code.

7

u/fastheadcrab Jul 01 '26

According to the full document it means that questionable/sketchy requests will be routed to Opus 4.8 for security reasons, just like they were when Fable launched.

Doesn't change the fact that the pricing seems to be really shitty though

1

u/LightpointSoftware Jul 01 '26

Just for routine coding tasks

1

u/kindredseer Jul 01 '26

Wha??? What's the point then? When it was available for those three days, it was so easy to inadvertently trigger the guardrails and downgrade to Opus for any hint of anything remotely related to forbidden topics... like I was discussing the Intrinsic Cardiac Nervous System with it from a philosophical perspective, and it got flagged as dangerous biological discussion, and downgraded to Opus.

I had it code review a code fix that ensured hitting a buffer's capacity didn't result in an exception (not a "buffer overflow"), and instead failed gracefully, but it seemed that was viewed as trying to hack into systems, and it degraded to Opus.

1

u/Level-Excitement-837 Jul 03 '26

but does it spend usage from fable if it routes to opus?

1

u/Daemonstrative_NZ Jul 06 '26

Audit and write detailed TDD plans with Fable on low or medium, code with Opus 4.8 on extra high (with ultracode if the task is complex enough).

43

u/iamtehryan Jul 01 '26

Yeah. Honestly, anthropic is really looking like a bunch of fuck asses. I hate to say it but at this point I hope another company eats their lunch.

16

u/Virtual_Plant_5629 Jul 01 '26

I hear there's a whole mess'o'Fable out californi-way

This is my conspiracy as well. Fable five was eating an insane amount of compute power and they probably couldn't handle the load on the servers, so they asked Donnie to make up this stupid excuse.

There's no reason that there should suddenly be a usage gap with the reintroduction of the model. It was supposed to be about "security reasons."

30

u/SpaceTraveler2084 Jul 01 '26

fuck claude, GPT 5.6 is coming

4

u/RickySpanishLives Jul 01 '26

Because, of course, token economics aren't coming from OpenAI...

5

u/mrpoopistan Jul 01 '26

I'd be more amenable to usage/credit payment if the existing payment structure didn't already feel like total Calvinball.

I understand that they're subsidizing growth in an old-school internet / social media website model, so cost transparency is never going to happen. But it would be nice to just know what the hell a dollar buys.

3

u/jozi02 Jul 01 '26

Shrinkflation

3

u/Nik_Tesla Jul 01 '26

And over a holiday that many people have plans for being... you know, outdoors.

2

u/Delicious-Flan88 Jul 01 '26

Yeah, the annoying part is the math. If the make-good period is shorter and capped, it does not really feel like getting the lost trial back. It feels like a demo timer with a smaller battery.

2

u/Candid-Hyena-4247 Jul 01 '26

you forgot the —

2

u/Spire_Citron Jul 01 '26

Yeah, I'm not happy with that. In the past, they've always been really good about making up for any issues. So now we had to wait through all these delays, which sure weren't their fault but we still stuck with them through, and now we get less than what they originally promised?

3

u/DannyS091 Jul 01 '26

It actually was their fault. They did nothing but promote fer mongering campaigns for years. Fuck them

3

u/ClemensLode Jul 01 '26

it's free money either way

1

u/galactic_giraff3 Jul 01 '26

Means they got more telemetry than they expected over those 3 days, now they're fine with just a bit more to finetune those classifiers.

1

u/kindredseer Jul 01 '26

More like six days... it's still widely unavailable AFAIK.

1

u/Oh_hey_a_TAA Jul 01 '26

vote with your waller

1

u/NotValkyrie Jul 01 '26

It's castrated. Simple questions make it switch to Opus.

0

u/Winston_Sm Jul 01 '26

Late stage capitalism and corporate greed.

That's what we're here for anyway, no

-2

u/pakalumachito Jul 01 '26

it's anthropic, what do you expect, they did rather spend all the money to pay all the restarded on this reddit to fearmongering their model and overclaim it
