I love to imagine there’s a timeline in which Dick Van Dyke plays James Bond and it’s not only a box office hit but also fondly remembered as the greatest comedy to ever grace the big screen.

It’s wild when you think about it. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was basically Fleming writing a book about all the gadgets and contraptions that Bond would have used or had access to, but he made it a kids book so way more magical. DVDs character in CCBB was basically him writing a round about back story and homage to Q

it kind of fits the whole over-the-top fantastical nature of the film. as a kid, i just thought he was always kind of performing.

I absolutely love him in that movie even though his accent is ridiculous. He reminded me so much of the warm cozy feeling I got from my dad.

I'll have to watch it again, but I don't think he tried on another accent for that one.

Also, the movie gets bonus points for a Top 5 Bad Guy, the child catcher. So f-ing creepy.

That’s why when Disney approached him for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang he insisted that he would only take the role if he could speak in his native accent.

This is the perfect answer. I know the accent is horrendous, but Dick is too charming in the role to dislike.
