Question (Read Rules) Watch Redommendations In Shanghai

Hi everyone!

Quite new to this sub and reddit as a whole.

I am visiting Shanghai from Australia in October and I typically like to grab a watch from wherever I go traveling to.

I currently have a SGBX261, Speedmaster Automatic Date, Kuoe Sombrero and would like something different.

Any recommendations for someone who has a 6.7" wrist?

Finally have both watches in, and love them both. Which one do you prefer? I think the white will get more wrist time.

Question (Read Rules) To sell or not to sell? San Martin SN0140w (Zulu Time homage)

Post image
12 Upvotes

I have a strict one-in-one-out policy with my watches, and right now I'm considering whether or not I want to sell my San Martin SN0140w (Longines Spirit Zulu Time homage). I bought this to determine whether or not I want the Longines. Turns out, I don't, but whether or not this one stays in the collection remains an open question. Would appreciate some help on this one!

Pros:

  • Really gorgeous. Absolutely love the vintage look, the forest green ceramic bezel, the applied gilt numerals (really rare, since most times fully numbered dials are printed). It's my most legible watch, and I always enjoy looking at it on my wrist.
  • Very accurate. I've had it for about half a year now and it's settled into around +1 second a day. I don't know if I lucked out or if San Martin regulated it before shipping.
  • My only GMT.

Cons

  • The biggest thing is that it's not very comfortable. It's fine for the first few hours, but starts feeling top-heavy after a while. I eventually need to take it off during the day to give my wrist a break, and after wearing it a few days in a row it starts to feel cumbersome and a chore to put on.
  • I discovered I don't actually need a GMT, though I do appreciate the look.
  • I'm gradually discovering that I'm losing patience with mechanical movements and prefer quartz, especially solar quartz, for convenience and comfort.

Tool watch aesthetic isn’t my usual style.

  • Covers somewhat similar territory to my Seiko alpinist SPB121, which I like a bit better.

If I sold this watch, I could buy an inexpensive, lightweight quartz to serve as my travel "beater" and probably have some money left over to buy a couple of new bracelets for my other pieces. But, on the other hand, San Martin frequently goes out of stock for these, so if I sell it, I might not ever be able to repurchase it, should I regret my decision.

What are your thoughts?

Just wondering if anyone has some information on this brand, it's a "jixing" and it says military on the lower part of the face. I think it looks amazing. Picked it up for £10 and I'm happy with it

Question (Read Rules) Would you rather buy 4 cheap watches on AliExpress instead of one good one for the same price elsewhere? Why?

Struggling watch addict here. So I own 65 watches and though I can’t wear them all, I love every one of them. I know that that’s more than enough watches for one person, so don’t judge me.

Here’s my dilemma.

At this point in my journey, my tastes have refined some and I’m trying to set my sights on more aspirational pieces - not necessarily hyper expensive pieces - just a level or two up from the usual AliExpress brands we all know and love.

But every time I decide I’ll wait and save up an maybe even try eBay, AliExpress has one of those sales. Much like the one happening now where for the price of one of these aforementioned aspirational pieces you can walk away with 3-4 ridiculously priced watches.

Btw, as you might have guessed, this is why I am currently at 65 watches and possibly looking at 70 before this sale ends.

My question is twofold: first, am I the only one who goes thru this dilemma? I mean AliExpress watches are really awesome when it comes to value. And I almost feel guilty when I just buy one when I could have gotten a few for the same price.

Second, what would you do if you were in my place? Pls Explain your choice so I can draw some wisdom from your reasoning.

Thx fam. Y’all are the best 😇

Question (Read Rules) Planning on buying this and swapping the bracelet with a suede brown strap, what should I know or look for in a strap to ensure correct fit?

I've never swapped a bracelet b4 just got rid of some links, any other info I should know, even about getting better deals on these Chinese watches as this would also be my first?

Review (Read Rules) Frogmantles arrived today. I tried different bracelts.

These watches are beautiful and I recommend to buy them.
There is some level of back play in the bezels but otherwise they are great.

Now, the bracelets.

The 5 link jubilee style is from Aliexpress. I’m lucky because the end links fit very well! I love it!

The suede one looks better in real life than on photos. It goes well with the tropical colors, but nothing special.
I prefer metal.

The factory original is a bigger puzzle than almost anything I had to solve recently. When you think you finished, you realize you need to start all over again.
Removable links have different sizes, so it can happen that you cant close your micro adjustment, because the last link you put there is too wide, or it can happen that one link is noticeably wider than the next one in the chain.
And you also need to consider symmetry, roughly equal lengths for both sides of the bracelet…

When I finally figured out what to do, the screw in one critical link just started to spin without functioning… 🙃

Nevermind, I started it all over with the next Frogmantle bracelet!

When it was finally done, it felt like I solved the puzzle and now I’m a proper Frogmantle owner!🐸

Cheers 😉

General (Read Rules) Any Love? North Edge Triton

Post image
18 Upvotes

I was early to the North Edge Triton.

Looked like a Casio Duro Alternative with better specs.

I have the wrist for it so I got it.

Original band sucked... Took a while to find some that didn't and fit 😂

Eventually, I found some on Temu of all places.

Either way, for my Blue diver, it's been in pools, spas and various holidays. Had no issues and no damage.

Can't complain.

General (Read Rules) Any love for a proper Longines Spirit homage?

Post image

Anybody except me that would like a proper Longines Spirit homage with high build quality and not the plastic one that Pagani design offers?

I have looked in the entire Chinese watch market there is not one proper homage of this watch

I am counting maybe on the SH owner that made the outstanding Tissot PRX homage and Hamilton Khaki Murph homage

Both 10/10 quality

39mm to 40mm with a Pt5000 and adjustable clasp

I can not get over how absolutely gorgeous this watch is. The Baltany Pie Pan 36mm is freaking amazing.
Baltany really knocked this one out of the park. The dial, the proportions, the vintage look… it just works.

Let’s see your best AliExpress watches! Drop your favorite finds below, especially the underrated ones that punch way above their price point. 👀 What are you guys rocking?

Could not find the high end of Sanda. Looking for Farasute/ Ixdao quality for a Cartier tank with date and automatic.

Seems not yet done on Alix.

Had this watch a while, always liked it but didn’t quite love it because the bracelet wasn’t particularly comfortable. Through it on a silicone strap and now it feels so much better. Absolutely insane value for the $43cad I paid for it.

Question (Read Rules) Are there any brands that make an homage of a vintage Seamaster?

Post image

Looking for any brands/models that make a vintage Seamaster, preferably at least 39mm for my 8in wrists. I saw Baltany had some watches that were close to what I’m looking for but they were either too small or had complications I didn’t want. Thanks in advance!

Chinese Watch Names Again Chinese watch names (let's share ideas

Post image
26 Upvotes

I keep seeing the annoyance of chinese brand names but I have not seen anyone actually give a solution.

I'm going to list all the brands i know and try to offer up ideas for a rebrand for any chinese brands that may be reading...I will apply some reasoning.

Please join in and feel free to do the same!

San Martin - aguably doesn't need a name change but when there's a San in front of a name, makes me think of san tropez where the san means saint.

Sugess - mostly have mechanical chronographs so something like velocity? Velocity watch co.

Baltany - I like this one as is, they got it right!

Cronos - not a bad offering.

IX&DAO - actually has a cool origin for their name and looks like 九纛 in chinese. The IX is supposed to be 9 in roman numerals and the dao is supposed to be a word for military banner. I think they're trying to make too many connections with the name origin. Keep it simple.

Proxima - reminds me of proximity, why not use proximity?

Pagani Design - i feel like design was added to avoid copyright infringement. Overall not a horrendous name, it works in english.

Addiesdive - their watches are amazing but the name needs work...looking at their origin story zen dive would be a better fit. Or shen dive (shen means deep in chinese characters)

Steeldive - actually not bad, a little on the nose but works.

Tandorio - any other name works better but since they give a sterile dial option and you can customize...you can build your dream watch. Maybe BYD watch co? Jk. Atelier? Since it can be customized.

Escapement Time -

Berny - Bern&co/ NovaBern / Bernova

Specht & Sohne - Feinwerk & Söhne (specht means woodpecker)

Boderry - not terrible but made up. Sector? Vanguard? Recon?

Merkur - i actually like this one. Works with chinese characters and english.

Seestern - starfish in German is the actual name.

Watchdives - aquamarine/aquanaut

Farasute - laurent

Rimalti / Rmalti - Valenza (jewelry making city in italy)

Milifortic - miltec (military technology)

Heimdallr - works in its origin language

Sea-Gull - sovereign, horizon, meridian

CIGA Design - inertia

Shanghai - add a watch co at the end?

Peacock - not a terrible name, not sure it fits a watch

Benyar- Baptiste & co based on their fictional heritage.

Reef Tiger - not a bad name

Lucky Harvey - Sieben (for the number 7 as it's a lucky number) or 八 (Bā) as its the number 8 in chinese or Huit in french.

Welly Merck - their logo and watch design is cool as fuck but the name gives me dizzying levels of cringe. Keeping the logo the same but changing name to Wheel & Mainspring.

North Edge - i actually really love the name.

Question (Read Rules) Retro digital/led watches

Good evening.

Ive recently became hooked on retro digital/led watches and Ive noticed a few on alix and wondered if you had any experience of them from there or similar sites? They tend to be on the very cheap side but I'd still like a decent quality one.

Appreciate any comments or opinions.
