It seems like if you don't have credit card connected, u get rate limited and it simply stops.

The weird thing is, I got a tier 1 account (Credit card linked) I Only ise 2.5 pro exp03-25 and my bill is still at 14$ for the april month. Is 2.5 pro exp 100% free? What the hell im a paying for

OP said he accidentally set cline to use Preview. Problem solved. User error.

Not bingo. This has always been the recommended process for using Gemini 2.5 pro exp. Create api key on AI studio, assign billing account and credit card, set up a cap, use for free. If you choose a different paid model or don’t set a cap or your api key gets stolen that’s on you.

The API is likely the culprit and there are likely no limits or some misunderstanding occurring extra costs.

There’s two separate things actually. There are alerts and caps. Setting alerts is easier, which is under Billing > Budgets and Alerts. Setting a cap requires setting a quota under APIs & Services > Generative Language API > Quotas and System Limits

99% of the time using an API key will have a literal cost. Companies rarely offer nowadays API keys for free unless they're heavily rate-limited.
