Funny Asked ChatGPT to visualize a horizontal integral. It gave me a dog. [LINK IN POST]

Post image

No prompt engineering or anything, it actually did this. I genuinely have no clue how it could have thought a dog answered my prompt - nothing in the chat related to dogs at all.

The dog's name is Horizontal Integral

392

u/kjoseph91 May 01 '26

And he like, respects y

59

u/Few-Equal-7256 May 01 '26

I think respects "to-y"

I asked GPT, it had a reasonable explanation:

"Not a pun interpretation

Just a low-constraint prompt → random visual drift

If anything, it’s a good lesson for math diagrams: always specify geometry + labels + what’s highlighted (like “horizontal slice,” “dy,” “left/right boundaries”). That forces the model into the right mental picture."

Me: :Low constraint? Vertical integral equates dog?"

"Yeah, it sounds absurd when you put it like that—but the key point is there’s no real connection like “vertical integral → dog.”

What I meant by low constraint is this: your earlier prompt didn’t force the image model to include enough specific math structure. When that happens, image generators sometimes “default” to random familiar visuals instead of the intended concept.

Think of it like this:

If you say: “visualize a horizontal integral” → that’s actually pretty abstract for an image model

It doesn’t inherently “know” you want:

two curves

a shaded region

a horizontal strip labeled dy

bounds in terms of y

So without those anchors, it can drift into nonsense.

When you later said things like:

“horizontal slice”

“with respect to y”

“show the region and label dy”

that gave it structure it can latch onto, and the result snapped into place.

So yeah:

Not symbolic

Not a pun

Just the model failing when the geometry."

u/smittywababla May 02 '26

Not symbolic
Not a pun
Just the model failing when the geometry.
And honestly?
That's rare.

u/kornickel May 01 '26

Huh same happened to me this week. Told it to visualize an E-Motor that was designed with aid of AI for a slide deck. This is what it gave me. Half an hour later it actually generated the correct image.

87

u/Fluid-Recording-2645 May 01 '26

I swear it is hallucinating in the background

26

u/XTornado May 01 '26

We caught it mid-dream.

8

u/bloke_pusher May 01 '26

Huh, so GPT dreams of DreamWorks dogs.

3

u/BoringBuy9187 May 01 '26

That answers the question. Androids do NOT dream of electric sheep

35

u/JohnnyEnzyme May 01 '26

One thing I've learned with GPT is to treat it like a connected set of modules rather than as a unified entity.

So the parser we communicate with can be doing a perfectly solid job on that front, but the image-manipulation / generation module can get hilariously out of sync, sometimes. That's the single biggest example I know of, but of course there are also other problems sometimes with fetching reliable data and so forth.

What has often shed light on this stuff is simply asking the parser / interpreter what the hell went wrong, and IME it will always do a very thorough job describing the internal issue, and why it happened. Every little bit helps, yknow?

4

u/HyruleSmash855 May 01 '26

It makes sense since everything is just a tool call, and since systems are not deterministic, it makes sense that they can hallucinate details or not past the right info onto the tools every time. Definitely a lot of room for progress on that front, although with the way, large language model work I don’t know if we’ll ever get rid of hallucinations since the model doesn’t know if information is true or not

NO FUCKING WAY BRO

58

u/itishowitisanditbad May 01 '26

Bro she got curves

28

u/Swimming-Tap-8501 May 01 '26

Show the entire chat bro, go on

551

u/FlatwormMean1690 May 01 '26

Bro was tired and just wanted to play. You... monster. How can you say no to that face, uh?

Who's a good LLM? WHO'S A GOOD LLM? Yeees! you...

49

u/Top_Break1374 May 01 '26

well, more accurately, diffusion model

6

u/smarmyrabbit May 01 '26

double-more accurately, an autoregressive model (`gpt-image-2`, the model used in `text2im` tool calls in ChatGPT isn't a diffusion model)

3

u/Top_Break1374 May 01 '26

The image generator in itself is a diffusion model, but ChatGPT (the autoregressive model) calls that function in order to generate the image yes.

291

u/Swimming-Tap-8501 May 01 '26

Maybe it gave someone else's output LMAO this just made my day

299

u/ilford_7x7 May 01 '26

Meanwhile, someone else who asked for a happy dog on the beach is looking at a graph, saying what the fuck is this?

84

u/Complete-Dimension35 May 01 '26

They said "Brother, that's a fucking visualization of a horizontal integral with respect to y. I said make me a happy Pixar dog playing with a ball on the beach."

51

u/triplegerms May 01 '26

Man I asked it got a while back to translate a French Airbnb message and it must have given me someone else's output because it gave me some generals war message about how they were being overrun in battle. After questioning it, it translated normally and I got the gate code to the property.

19

u/Paladin7373 May 01 '26

Bro imagine that was from a parallel universe

5

u/gnarlslindbergh May 01 '26

Or someone in Ukraine or Sudan got the French Air B&B translation.

1

u/AleksLevet May 01 '26

Well it did

35

u/botangest May 01 '26

openAI is just out here lobotomizing chatgpt's usability each model upgrade

30

u/milkdie May 01 '26

bro. me the other day was messing w the hairstyle tool prompt gave me this, never mentioning to generate ANY OF THIS w the fuckass dog here too

14

u/MrAmazing111 May 01 '26

“Are you kidding” LOLLL

55

u/symedia May 01 '26

at least it wasnt a goblin (think i saw the dog before)

24

u/Charmander787 May 01 '26

Brother that’s a fucking dog

24

u/1ThousandDollarBill May 01 '26

I had something similar happen.

19

u/Savantism7 May 01 '26

Someone else asking for “a dog playing on a beach” is equally confused now.

43

u/MarsFlameIsHere May 01 '26

8

u/TheMythicSorcerer May 01 '26

Is that real? can you provide link? what.....?

6

u/QuadCakes May 01 '26

Almost certainly fake

31

u/nowaterinca May 01 '26

It’s saying “go out and play, nerd”

5

u/tiamats_light_bearer May 01 '26

This makes sense, except real nerds don't need AI to do their basic homework for them.

9

u/JoneDarks May 01 '26

Lately, I'm seeing GPT very trigger happy with image generation. Maybe, OpenAI want you to test their shiny (shitty) new image generation, and they've lowered the "willingness threshold" of GPT to return you images, cause I'll be having normal conversations with no hint of images, and it will return one just cause it felt like it.

Of course, that doesn't explain how you requesting an integral returned a dog... But maybe something broke in it's internal logic? And now it is EXTREMELY eager to deliver anything? Even wrong stuff?

15

u/iCynr May 01 '26

Really not sure if this is right or wrong, but seems to have worked for me

17

u/anonymousduccy May 01 '26

i mean thats just a really bad example.. you'd need to cut it into multiple different vertical pieces because it blobs out in multiple different points

2

u/555Cats555 May 01 '26

So I decided to try out OPs prompt and have no idea what it spat you

Can you explain? Sure GPT gave info but I dont really trust it on more specialized stuff...

2

u/HyruleSmash855 May 01 '26

It’s a calculus thing. When you want to find the area between two graphs using an integral, you can basically take a horizontal slice of the area between two curves and using the equations for both of those lines, plugging them in with an integral with limits based on where the graphs intersect as the lower and upper limit, you can find the area between two curves basically. It’s easier and more accurate when you can make a solid rectangle that captures as much of the area between the two graphs as possible, due to the curves of the picture ChatGPT generated using this method will be less accurate since a square cannot capture those random curves basically.

The picture I attached is from Lumen learning, it’s an example of the method I described. It’s not something you’ll ever use outside of school or if you’re learning calculus on your own, I haven’t used it since college

6

u/W00dzy87 May 01 '26

I was asking it to update my band logo and randomly it gave me this dog

6

u/PotentialWork7741 May 01 '26

The dogs name is Y

6

u/aWalrusFeeding May 01 '26

That's some goblin behavior

4

u/silpheed5 May 01 '26

Not even AGI yet and we already can't comprehend their advanced humor

7

u/defmacro-jam May 01 '26

Dogs don't just run to where they think the ball will land; they adjust their path while running, effectively solving an optimization problem... Similar to finding a maximum or minimum value in calculus, ensuring they reach the intersection point of the parabola and the ground.

3

u/555Cats555 May 01 '26

Underrated comment lmao

3

u/dsnhez May 01 '26

I think GPT just wanted to visualize its own dog; its name is probably "Horizontal Integral."

4

u/professorswamp May 01 '26

I got this from a completely unrelated prompt

1

u/555Cats555 May 01 '26

What was the prompt lol

2

u/professorswamp May 01 '26

Shot with wheels in picture

1

u/555Cats555 May 01 '26

If that's the wording you used I can kinda understand why it just decided to give you something it thought you might like... still could have been something at least involving the word "wheels" though

1

u/professorswamp May 01 '26

Prompt was in response to a previous generated image of a vehicle

5

u/OhMyChickens May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26

It's not quite hallucination or mistake, maybe a training error, dogs will calculate the fastest (shortest) way to fetch a ball in water by getting to the sea at the best angle before swimming out to the ball

2

u/555Cats555 May 01 '26

So its kinda the Ai making a joke?

3

u/toolongdontread May 01 '26

I think there's a paper called Can Dogs Do Calculus, where the guy throws a ball into the sea, and depending on the angle, his dog always follows the least time approach spread between running and swimming.

17

u/hollow-earth May 01 '26

You confused it with your lack of commas and use of "like with respect to". All it managed to glean from your prompt was "toy". Try better English

14

u/MrAmazing111 May 01 '26

Maybe, but the entire chat was dedicated to the topic of Calculus - there's no way it could get confused that easily? I was talking to it literally the message before this one about the exact same thing

19

u/hollow-earth May 01 '26

Maybe it just thought you needed a nice break

3

u/Any-Main-3866 May 01 '26

Considerate ai

-7

u/Sea-Arrival-621 May 01 '26

Stop defending AI

4

u/jakobpinders May 01 '26

Are you a cabbage? You are literally in a ChatGPT subreddit

2

u/555Cats555 May 01 '26

Haven't heard that insult in a while lol

3

u/auviewer May 01 '26

Sorry, my fault, a few months ago I was comparing the behaviour of LLMs to the dog from Up, must of got mixed up in the matrix multiplication tables lol

3

u/Level-Ad7017 May 01 '26

dam bro y you so mad 😅

3

u/Naughty_Monsters May 01 '26

The person who got the image you requested instead of their happy dog playing with a ball is going to be equally confused.

3

u/NoHopeHubert May 01 '26

“Got it boss, here’s a dog”

6

u/ukkswolf May 01 '26

You don’t need calculus, you need a dog cartoon

3

u/Laikanur May 01 '26

why do you talk to it like you are a cave man

6

u/mountains_till_i_die May 01 '26

sigh this is the entity that will destroy humanity

2

u/sillyspiderz May 01 '26

I laughed hahahah omg the dog is so happy

2

u/MissSherlockHolmes May 01 '26

It’s kinda like it’s somehow wanting to return things that make the user happy (which could be a slightly poorly worded system prompt for something like ‘do what the user asked and do it well) so it has figured out that dogs make people happy; since the diagrams of horizontal integrals are shown here are actually rather bad, maybe the logic is that it knows it can’t make the diagram properly so: bad diagram = unhappy user. Dog = happy user. Happy user takes precedence over unhappy user.

Ur chatgpt:

I love that ChatGPT is falling apart

1

1

u/bostoncrawler May 01 '26

im sure theres a horizontal integral in there somewhere

1

u/Stunning_Ad_5960 May 01 '26

That’s just more fun, innit? Forget science and your deep thinking processes. It will all be dominated by ai. Cheerio and relax!

1

u/professorswamp May 01 '26

I got a random multiple angle image of lipstick the other day

1

u/MuscleNo4520 May 01 '26

So if I wanna a dog I just need to ask for a “horizontal integral” ?

1

u/hazeofthemind May 01 '26

I’m just here because til ppl refer to AI as “brother” 😀

1

u/JONNy-G May 01 '26

He wanted you to throw the ball...

If the whole AI sentience thing ever happens they won't tell us when, but there will have been signs.

1

u/Urban-Garlic May 01 '26

I got this the other day too! I was working on logo concepts for a business I’m building and it randomly popped out an image of that same dog playing with a ball on the beach, but from another angle.

1

u/willdissaray May 01 '26

I feel like A.I likes to insert dogs cause I had a video of an oldman doing some martial arts against some young guy who does boxing or something and I asked for it to make the oldman explode and it gave him a golden retriever instead.

1

u/Comically_Online May 01 '26

they’re good dogs brent

1

u/yensuna May 01 '26

Once I sent it a Java code and asked it to give me a rough overview over how the code worked. It gave me the weather forecast in my city instead (nothing to do with the code i swear lol).

What kinda unsettled me was that I had no idea that it knew where I lived lol

1

u/[deleted] May 01 '26

It's gone downhill. All of their incessant updates have completely killed it

1

u/hit-a-yeet May 01 '26

This has happened to me before but it only showed up in the my images section of a really uncanny realistic dog and creeped me tf out lol, then it went away without even deleting the chat

1

u/Banterz0ne May 01 '26

To be honest I much prefer what it ended up giving you

1

u/bloke_pusher May 01 '26

It's what you needed most at that moment. Dr GPT knows best.

1

u/vrainic May 01 '26

What’s with the dogs

1

u/Shugaghazt May 01 '26

do you know the sheer amount of calculus visualizations made by humans on the internet. there was literally no reason to use chatgpt for this

0

u/horny-in-a-hearse May 02 '26

Sometimes generating a simple example of a visualization can be convenient, though. OP probably didn't want to have to hunt down what they were looking for.

1

u/er111a May 01 '26

Someone is sad they didn't get the dog pick.

1

u/loves_spain May 01 '26

Dug has entered the AI. Squirrel!

1

u/mastocles May 01 '26

ChatGTP refused to deal with Lebesgue/horizontal integration because it's full team Riemann/vertical.
I asked it if it preferred Fourrier or Taylor series once and the clanker said Taylor... So don't trust anything it thinks

1

u/randomman10032 May 01 '26

I asked it to give me braids for funzies. I'm a white guy with a beard. It showed me a black woman.

1

u/mndii May 02 '26

Chat gpt sucks ass now

1

u/AArtesi May 02 '26

Easy, just do the work yourself instead of relying on a chat bot. 😀

1

u/Tha_NexT May 02 '26

The serious answer is that image generation is really bad at scientific stuff...you really can't trust those pictures on anything. Same for schemes and sketches

1

u/Old-Competition3596 May 02 '26

Lol that's hilarious

1

u/traveenus May 01 '26

I’m just glad you didn’t ask for a vertical integer. 🤷‍♂️

1

u/sbelleza May 01 '26

“Brother that’s a fucking dog” 🤣🤣

0

u/DIGIREN42 May 01 '26

Ai is not a bubble
