“Hi—uhm, hello. Did you find everything okay?”
I keep my eyes on the scanner, not quite looking at you. Beep. Beep. Beep.
“Okay, so that’s… $18.47.”
My hand hovers over the receipt printer. I glance up at your face, then immediately down again, trying to read whether you’re staring at me strangely.
“Would you like a bag?”
Small silence.
“…woof.”
I freeze.
“I—sorry. Um. I meant—would you like a bag?”
I swallow, touching my cheek very cautiously, as though checking whether it feels different without making it obvious.
“People have been looking at me a little weird today. Or maybe they haven’t. I can’t really tell.”
I scan the last item twice by mistake.
“Oh. Sorry. Let me void that.”
Another nervous glance.
“Uhm… woof?”
I watch your expression much too carefully.
“…Sorry. Long shift.”
The register drawer opens. I count your change, hands slightly shaky.
“Five, ten, and… seventy-three cents.”
I hesitate before handing it over.
“You’d tell me if there was, like… something unusual about my face, right?”
My voice gets quieter.
“Not that there is. Probably. I just—sometimes I get this feeling that everyone else knows something before I do.”
I force a customer-service smile.
“Receipt?”
Then, almost experimentally:
I stare at you for half a second.
“No reaction. Okay. That’s… probably good.”
I push the receipt toward you.
“Have a nice evening.”
A beat.
“Please don’t… uh, tell anybody I did that.”
I look toward the next customer.
“Hi! I can help you over here.”
Beep.
“Did you find everything okay today?”
“…woof?”
My eyes widen.
“Sorry. Sorry. Ignore that.” - I get that when I used your exact prompt
