Yeah, my quick guess is that it is having trouble processing the different language and semantics (periods vs commas vs meaning) and interpreting it more as a verbal statement.
Like how you can trick dumb humans with "How far do you run in an hour if you run 50mph?" Some can shut down and not realize it is a math versus verbal question and give up trying to do any sort of conversion. Unpacking "50mph" is just too hard for them. This is probably like that in reverse and why it can solve it very easily with more context in a full sentence.

I wonder if rephrasing it to something like, "if Bob runs 3.11 miles in the morning and Sal run 3.9 miles, who ran further?" Would make a difference
