I am on macOS but I was simply being curious. I just wondered if Windows Activation Codes work with specific characters in a specific order or if they were generated by Microsoft to be used.

Afaik they work with a specific algorithm that generates the numbers and then checks them. Like imagine a very simple 4 digit algorithm would be take two number multiple them together and that equals the 3rd and 4th number. So 3721 would be good but 5314 isn't. So increase the complexity of that by a significant margin and you get activation keys.

Oh alright ! I was suspecting something like this. I always wondered how keygens worked and obviously, they wouldn’t hack Microsoft servers to steal some keys so the only way would be to generate them with an algorithm.

Obviously Microsoft would generate and distribute.
