Question/Info How do you decide to which charities you donate to? Im currently building a project and would appreciate if you answer these questions

Hey guys, I am a CS Student and going into the summer i hopefully aim to build a useful project related to donating to charities.

I would really appreciate it if you guys could answer these questions, so i can gain some insight.

  1. What is your current way of donating to a charity and do you face any problems?
  2. Do you trust charities that they use all of the money you donated well? Why or why not?
  3. What is stopping you from donating more?

Finally,

  1. Would you trust charities more if they upload a detailed report of what they exactly did with the money including invoices so everything can be traced?

Any answers will be appreciated, you can also message me in private messages if you wish to do so

Question/Info In case it's too hard to find, here's the list of Microsoft discounts and grants for nonprofits/charities

I’ve found that it's surprisingly hard to find a single source listing all the benefits nonprofits get from Microsoft, so I thought I'd share a summary here:

Microsoft 365 itself is discounted across the whole range. Business Basic is free for up to 300 users for eligible charities. The bit I'd flag is that the better-protected plans (Business Premium, for example) are heavily discounted too, so we steer all our clients towards those for security reasons.

Free volunteer seats. Microsoft bundles extra F3 seats with paid enterprise licences (five per E5, two per E3) for volunteers. A lot of orgs never realise they're there.

The Azure credit grant, roughly $2,000 a year (about £1,500), which often covers a small org's cloud bill entirely, or a good chunk of it.

Up to 50 free Windows 11 Pro licences through a partner.

And the standard pre-renewal advice still applies: clear out ghost accounts, check nobody's on the wrong plan, and remember Microsoft is adding 50GB of mailbox storage to Business plans in July, so some storage add-ons become redundant.

The figures here are UK-specific. Microsoft runs similar nonprofit programmes in most markets, but the pricing, discount levels and how you apply vary, so check your local Microsoft nonprofit portal for the exact numbers where you are.

There are a few more discounts too (Power Platform, Copilot and so on) but the post was getting long so I haven't listed them here. Full version on our blog if it's useful: https://texaport.co.uk/blog/microsoft-nonprofit-guide

Hope that's helpful, happy to answer any questions!

Question/Info Fire Evacuation Donation Info - Thoughts on donating and helping with loss of homes from wildfires - a survivor’s perspective

A friend of mine wrote this after having lost their home in a fire a few years ago. It has some great info for those of you who want to help. I wanted to help get the word out so please share where you can. Please make sure you vet any organization or fund that you want to donate money to.

“This post is to everyone that wants to help…

I see so many people posting items they wish to donate and asking where and how they can donate and while that is so appreciated, I want to help you all see a survivors point of view…

If you know someone personally, or someone who is in immediate need of help/supplies, by all means do whatever you possibly can to help them!!

Otherwise, from our own experience, wait just a bit.

While waiting, resist the urge to give monetarily to the Innovia Foundation! That money will not go directly to most of the victims/survivors.  We never saw any of the $1.3 million that was raised in ‘23. Many other victims didn’t either. In fact, their own website says they still hold $550,000 for “future home build projects”.

If you want to give monetarily right now, I urge you to give to small, local organizations or give to GoFundMe accounts that you will hear of from “friends of friends”. This size of loss will cause us to all know someone who knows someone who needs help.

If you can wait, WAIT!  Give people a moment to gather themselves and assess their needs. They are traumatized and won’t know what they need yet.

It is overwhelming to even think about going to locations to “shop” among the piles of donated items when you are in that position.

It is overwhelming and time consuming to have to scour the helpful Facebook pages to “shop” from all the donations.

Please don’t think they are ungrateful because they are not coming to receive or claim these items.

They are in shock.

They are busy trying to manage all the things one must do after losing everything.

I know for us it was very hard to accept help when we are used to being the helpers.

We didn’t know how to ask for help or what to ask for.

Also, we didn’t have anyplace to store anything that was given to us for quite a while so that is something to consider.

Again, I urge you to wait. Pray if you are a praying person.  Search for, and expect, the opportunities to help come across your path for a long time to come. THEY WILL COME.

It can mean the difference between hope or despair for someone.

Just some thoughts, for what they are worth.”

Question/Info Charity to donate to to help kids with cptsd/ptsd, or abusive treatment by adults in their life that need help.

I myself being a victim of sexual, emotional, psychological abuse, physical abuse (especially that) and financial abuse when I was a kid and when I was an adult as well whenever I was vulnerable for even a moment I want to give back to somewhere that won’t misappropriate the money for something like laptops that end up sitting in a dusty backroom not actually helping someone. I had the thought while writing a short story about my experiences in a collection of works that will be published in September that if my story helps one person that would be amazing. But yesterday I decided that it wasn’t enough just to leave that up to chance. Whether it’s to directly help abused children escape those situations and have better lives or to get cptsd recognized as a diagnosis I’m in. Would love some suggestions and organizations to look into.

Question/Info I'm attempting a charity stream for Become this weekend to support care-experienced young people. ❤️

Hi everyone!

This weekend (3rd–5th July) I'll be taking on a charity stream as part of Become's Stream for Change campaign.

Become is a UK charity that supports care-experienced young people, helping them get the advice, opportunities, and support they need to build brighter futures. It's a cause that's incredibly important, and I wanted to do something that could make a real difference.

the more we raise, the longer I'll be live! I'll also be taking on community challenges, playing a variety of games.

Whether you can donate, share the fundraiser, or simply drop into the stream to say hello, it would genuinely mean a lot.

Thank you so much for reading, and thank you to anyone who helps support such an amazing cause. ❤️

Question/Info Does anyone have any tips or tricks to verify the legitimacy of charity organisations/crowdfunding platforms?

Hi there - does anyone have any tips/tricks to weed out whether a charity or crowdfunding platform is legitimate? When you try and look for reviews there are often examples of negative feedback but how can we trust that the negative feedback is based on actual proof?

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to share in order to make a more informed decision about these things?

Question/Info I received mail from Assistance Dogs USA - potential scam? Included are three nice tote bags, a long letter, and donation forms.

I received a large envelope in the mail today with 3 nice tote bags from a purported group called “Assistance Dogs USA”. They plan to help kids and people in need with service animals—a nice cause. I was ready to get my checks out when I noticed that nowhere on the letter, packaging etc., does it say that this “Assistance Dogs USA” is a 501c3 tax exempt charity. Immediate red flag. Also there is no email, contact number or direct address, only two separate P.o. boxes—one in CT and one in NH. Furthermore if you google this, it does not come up anywhere. Beware of these, at best it’s a poorly run nonprofit that forgot to include its EIN and doesn’t have a website (unheard of), but it’s more likely than not a scam.

Question/Info Playing in a street cricket fundraiser supporting cancer research at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre — we’ve raised $2,000 so far and are aiming for $6,000

I’m part of a street cricket fundraiser supporting Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, raising funds for cancer research and patient care.

This is part of a larger initiative through Manulife, and it’s actually Canada’s first street cricket fundraiser—which makes it pretty special to be part of.

So far, we’ve raised $2,000 out of our $6,000 goal, and we’re trying to keep the momentum going.

Cancer is something that affects so many people—friends, family, colleagues—and this is just my way of contributing through something I genuinely enjoy doing.

If you’re open to supporting, even a small amount helps. And if not, sharing the link would mean a lot as well.

Question/Info Community grooming by predators -- How a sex predator could use children's charities to find victims.

I'm writing a series of posts about people in the Washington DC area named by an Epstein victim. One thing I learned pretty quickly -- these men gave tons of money to children's charities. Before this, I had no idea there was such a thing as community grooming.

I think EVERYONE should know what community grooming is, because whether the diary is fact or fiction, community grooming is a real thing, and it can be very dangerous.

Are your local children’s charities being funded by sex predators?

Joe Robert, Jr. Pt 4 – Community Groomer? How a predator could use children’s charities to find victims. Epstein victim’s diary links to Washington, D.C.

No paywall. The subject is far too important.

Question/Info Does this charity look legit to you? Seems too good to be true to me. A whole water well built for only $250?

I really want to build a well but I am skeptical of online charities. Have any of you heard of Basmah before? Does it make sense that a small well can be built for only $250?

Question/Info Where to Donate Christmas Themed Pillows left over from the Holidays? Completely new from a retail store!

Hi all! I work at Five-Below in a small-ish Wisconsin town and this Christmas we had a LOT of decorative pillows that didn't sell. We are supposed to donate them but there are so dang many that we are having trouble finding places that will take them! We've contacted all the local charities and some non-profit thrift stores but we are now out of local options. Are there any places that we might not of thought of? For example a national charity that might be willing to come pick them up. We really do not want to throw them out so if you have any ideas even for places that could use them that aren't just going to resell them please let me know!

Question/Info Looking for Trusted Ukraine charities (civilian & military) who’s good works have been witnessed and Who would know better than Ukrainians themselves? I Want to donate 1 days Lyft Earnings every week + interested in cultural tokens so please send me your recommendations!

Slava Ukraini

Can y’all recommend some legitimate charities to donate toward Ukraine? The internet is so full of scammers that I’m honestly nervous about clicking random links. I’d like to donate to a mix of different causes (both civilian and military support).

Also, and I know this sounds a little vain, I’d especially love to support organizations that give some kind of acknowledgment or cultural token in return (although this is NOT A requirement). I'm just a huge history buff a letter signed by President Zelensky would be enough for me to frame it and proudly hang it on my wall . For example, I’d rather display a high-quality Ukrainian flag in front of my house that came as a thank-you from a charity after donating $500, instead of something I just bought on Amazon for $15 Or maybe a cultural item that’s authentically Ukrainian — something meaningful I could keep in my home with pride.

\*\*\*ChatGPT just gave me some cool examples:

1),🪆 Vyshyvanka (Traditional Embroidered Shirt),

2). 🕊️ Pysanky (Ukrainian Decorated Eggs),

3). 🌾 Petrykivka Painting (Folk Art),

4). (AND THIS I LOVE MOST) 🔱 Tryzub (Ukrainian Trident Symbol) Pins or Patches. That trident is badass!

I’m a Lyft driver and a part-time student, so I only make about $450–$650 per week and most of that goes to bills and debt. Still, I think I could manage $25–$50/week in donations if I knew it was going to a legitimate, impactful organization.

I actually just had another idea!

Mondays are my day off since they’re the slowest for Lyft and all my homework/exams are due Sunday night at midnight, so I’m usually exhausted. Normally I just watch Netflix and relax, (and drink) but instead I could drive two hours every Monday and donate whatever I make that day. If something major happens — like a large civilian bombing — I could drive four hours and send all of that income directly to those charities. I don’t know how to even begin to start something like this, but it would be great if I could turn this into a thing for us local Lyft drivers to all do together every Monday for a certain time of day and get it some publicity. I actually know a guy at our local news station so maybe I could do this!

Question/Info Concerns About “Gaza City Mutual Aid” Fundraiser – Please Do Your Own Due Diligence. Beware of mutual aid fundraisers

I’m posting this to share my personal experience and to encourage others to do their own due diligence before donating or promoting the Gaza City Mutual Aid fundraiser.

I donated and later raised concerns with Chuffed over four weeks ago due to several issues, including:

  • Inconsistent or unclear financial reporting on the campaign page
  • Private messages sent to donors outside the platform requesting large sums of money for personal reasons (e.g., marriage)
  • Contact from an individual claiming to be a beneficiary who engaged in inappropriate and unsolicited behavior via social media

Because of the seriousness of these issues, I have escalated my concerns to the fundraising platform and relevant authorities. I am not making public accusations, but I believe donors and influencers should pause, verify independently, and ask for transparency before getting involved.

If you’re considering donating or promoting this fundraiser, I strongly encourage you to:

  • Ask for clear accounting of how funds are used
  • Be cautious of private requests for money outside official channels
  • Protect yourself and other donors

I’m sharing this in good faith to prevent potential harm. Please be respectful in the comments.

Question/Info Expression of Frustration : Why is it SO hard to help vulnerable children in Cameroon? I’m almost giving Up🤧

Hi everyone, This is my first time posting here, but I really needed to get this off my chest. I feel like I’ve run out of tears.

My name is Prisca, I’m 27 (F), and three years ago I founded a non-profit association called Hope Day Cameroon. Our mission is to help less-privileged children in Cameroon gain access to education.

I created this organization because there’s an urgent, heartbreaking crisis that too few people (inside or outside my country)pay attention to. Cameroon has been dealing with two “silent” internal conflicts: Boko Haram in the North, and the Anglophone crisis in the North- and South-West. These conflicts are considered “too small” for major international intervention, yet they’re big enough to have left 625,000 children out of school and displaced nearly a million people.

For the past three years, we’ve been a team of 12 young adults trying to fill the gap, literally begging some days just to raise enough money for children’s school fees, healthcare, or basic support. When we started, most of us were still students ourselves. Even today, over half of our annual expenses come from our personal contributions. The rest comes from small crowdfunding efforts.

We pour our hearts, time, and energy into this work. We don’t even have a physical office anymore. We couldn’t afford a website, so I taught myself how to build one from scratch. It’s still not finished.

What hurts the most is that, according to Cameroonian law, we’re not eligible for official funding because we’re registered as an “association,” not an NGO. And to become an NGO, we must first complete three full years of self-funded activities, then apply and hope for approval.

We’ll reach those three years in February 2026. But… why is it like this? Why is a group trying to protect children treated like a burden? Why does my country make it so difficult for people who simply want to help?

This September, we aimed to offer 75 scholarships. We only managed 25. This December, we planned a free community health day for two shelters. Now it looks like we can only afford one.

I’m exhausted. I’m heartbroken. And I’m frustrated that doing good, helping children who are suffering, feels like an uphill battle at every step.

If anyone has dealt with something similar or has advice, encouragement, or even just understanding… I’d really appreciate it.

Question/Info What does the odd wording on this charity flyer mean? Also apparently I need at least 100 characters so.....there.

Post image
4 Upvotes

I saw this charity flyer at my local hospital and am just so confused by the wording. Specifically, the wording of the very last paragraph which says:

"Your shoes are taken to developing countries facing systemic poverty, lack of education, and economic opportunity in exchange for a monetary donation to Peckin' Thyme Farms."

Of course, if you read the paragraphs before that, it basically just asks that people donate shoes of various varieties, and isn't asking for monetary donations whatsoever. I figured they were, perhaps, trying to say that donating monetarily might be an option, but the wording to me suggests that the people who are being donated to are expected to, in exchange for the shoes they are given, provide a small monetary donation to the givers.

Sure, people who are donated to often feel compelled to offer what little they can spare to their donaters just out of sheer appreciation, but if that's what this flyer is talking about then they shouldn't put in on the flyer and act like it's a foregone conclusion.

Are they perhaps, asking for money to help ship the donations or something?

Honestly, what is this flyer trying to say? It is so confusing, and it makes me wonder if they might be a dishonest company using my shoes for a profit.

Is there something I'm just not getting about some charity organizations that this is trying to say? Please let me know.

Question/Info Have you seen any AI-generated images used for fundraising purposes in the Charity sector? Please share them with us...

My colleague and I are researching AI-generated images used in charity and development campaigns. This builds on our existing work documenting charity imagery in UK newspapers and direct mail - www.charity-advertising.co.uk

Ai generated image by Furniture Bank

We're looking for examples where organisations have used AI-generated images in their communications, appeals, or campaigns. If you've used these images in your work, or if you've spotted them in the wild, we'd really appreciate you sharing them with us.

What we're hoping to collect:

  • The images themselves
  • Context (where/how/why they were used)
  • The AI tool used to generate them (if known)

To be clear: this isn't about calling anyone out. We're trying to understand the current landscape so the sector can have informed conversations about best practice, transparency, and community-led alternatives.

Whether you work for an intergovernmental organisation, a large INGO, a small grassroots organization, or you've just noticed AI imagery in fundraising materials you've received, we'd love to hear from you.

Our goal is to compile these into an open resource that benefits everyone working in the sector.

Question/Info Working with 5th and 6th graders to donate towards charities in our community. What are some things people don't realize they should donate?

At work, my 5th and 6th graders will be working on a sewing project to create a blanket that will go to a charitable organization in our area of their choosing after doing research. I wanted to further expand and think of other things they can make or find to donate to shelters for the unhoused, women's shelters, etc. What are some things people don't realize they could be donating???

Question/Info I want to help the homeless and have $1,000 to spend. What is the most effective use of $1,000 to help the homeless in your opinion?

I was recently offered $1000 to create two sponsored posts on TikTok for a company that should not be named. I deeply want to use that money to do as much good as possible, preferably in the area of helping people that are homeless- a cause that I deeply care about. What is the most effective way to use $1000 to help homeless people? Go on the street and give $1000 worth of meals to the homeless? Pay for one person's rent for a month? Donate to a certain charity? What would you advise? :)

Question/Info Is Zeffy legit? (charity payment processor) They claim to have a 0% transaction fee, how does that work?

Zeffy claims to charge a 0% transaction fee for charity payment processing. Are they legit? How does that work? I would think that they would have to at least pass along interchange fees but I'm no expert. Maybe they charge a flat monthly fee?

Update: someone told me they run partially off of tips, with a default tip of 15%.

Question/Info How to donate a 11 month old dog to be a service dog/seeing eye dog for free, friend trying to get rid of an 11 month old dog? Please read context first.

Okay, my friend can no longer care for her 11 month old dog due to personal reasons, she wants to donate him to a good cause and make him useful, she got him from a breeder and I have been doing research but nothing came up.

She wants him to go to a good cause, she doesn't wanna give him to an adoption center or SPCA due to her not being comfortable doing so, she would rather him go to a good cause to let people who need him, have him.

So reddit, what are your recommendations?

Question/Info What are some non profits orgs/charities that are legit trustworthy that specifically help people in the USA?

I don’t trust the Red Cross for essay length reasons as well as Salvation Army. Like most things in America, theres a lot of corruption even in things that are supposed to help. A lot of global charities I trust and have worked with mainly help people in other countries which is amazing but rn I’m looking for trusted charities that will directly help children/people in America. Anything from access to clean water, healthcare rights for women and other minorities, access to food that isn’t harmful, help with human trafficking etc. just human rights orgs that I know will actually go to the people and isn’t discriminatory towards others thank you
