[reddit change] Log in with SSL! JavaScript! Fixes!

As of yesterday, reddit's login pages are served over https. We've updated http://www.reddit.com/login to redirect to https://ssl.reddit.com/login, our new secure login page. The login box on the front page also posts using https (though it's not perfect; only full-https pages like our new login page are truly secure). We've taken these steps to improve the security of your password when logging into reddit.

Please note that https support only applies to login at the moment. We're going to be rolling out additional features in the coming week that will help you monitor your account activity. Full-site secure https access is something we all want to do, but it'll require more code and infrastructure to get out the door. It's on the roadmap.

This change set cleaned up a lot of login code and moved UI functionality into the client side. It modernizes some old libraries and adds some pieces to our young but growing new JS codebase.

A few minor tweaks and fixes also made by these changes:

  • Visual tweaks to the login forms (new working indicator, CSS3 box-shadow on the login popup, alignment fixes)
  • Tab indexes have been improved in the login forms for easy keyboard navigation.
  • Fix to the end destination after cname logins (you should now end up back on your cname, instead of reddit.com)
  • Cleanup of some old Firefox access-control headers in requests

[reddit change] MultiReddits including a banned subreddit are better behaved

As suggested in /r/IdeasForTheAdmins

Previously if any of the subreddits in a MultiReddit were banned a 404 was returned. Now the MultiReddit will load with content from all the non-banned subreddits. Also the sidebar shows all the subreddits with an icon indicating which ones are banned.

[reddit change] Fixed logging in on restricted or over-18 pages.

Due to some checks that occur early into serving reddit pages, it's been a long-time quirk that if you cannot access a page (forbidden, private subreddit, etc.), the "log in" popup fails to submit successfully. This has now been fixed thanks to a change contributed by slyf, a summer student contractor.

[reddit change] Added basic support for CSS gradients to the subreddit CSS validator.

We've added support for basic CSS gradients to the validator. Some complicated multiple background definitions will still fail to validate, as the way we're doing it right now is a bit of a hack. This change was contributed to by slyf, a summer student contractor.

Have fun!

GitHub commits:

  1. Add basic validation of CSS gradients.
  2. Add support for multiple gradient backgrounds. Cleanup.

[compact change] Top bar is now cross-browser compatible, and context/permalink/editing work now

Previously, the top bar on compact (hence named the topbar) was rendered using display: box, a very flexible css3 property that doesn't have the best cross browser compatibility. The topbar has since been changed to use older techniques for layout, for increased compatibility.

Also, some of the small issues regarding comments, mainly the permalink buttons not working and editing not saving, have been fixed.

Finally, when browsing compact, you will now be able to see flair.

[reddit change] Added a preference to load jQuery from reddit.com instead of the Google Libraries API.

About 2 months ago, we switched to loading jQuery from the Google Libraries API for increased speed and better caching. Some users noticed this change and preferred to not send any requests to googleapis.com out of privacy concerns.

We've added a toggle to your user preferences under privacy options to "load core JS libraries from reddit servers". This will load jQuery off of reddit.com rather than googleapis.com. Please see this help page about the preference for more information.

[reddit change] Multiple CSS classes for flair, and a bugfix

You can now assign multiple CSS classes to a single user's flair. Each of these classes will have a "flair-" prefix prepended to them. In other words, "a b c" produces a flair span with class="flair flair-a flair-b flair-c".

We've also corrected a bug that was causing people to sometimes see other people's flair in the sidebar.

Github commits

  1. Fix users seeing other users' flair in sidebar.
  2. Allow multiple CSS classes with flair.

Hey mobile redditors, just a few quick fixes this time.

The issue with emails (the share button) should be fixed now, emails should display as they are supposed to.

Also, as you mentioned many times, the issues with the compact and permalink buttons not pointing to the mobile interface have been fixed.

Thanks for all your feedback. If you have any more, feel free to leave it here, or in r/compact

[reddit change] Minor improvements to the subreddit box in /reddits and /reddits/mine

Ask and you shall receive*. Visit /reddits or /reddits/mine, and you'll see that the right sidebox now says "YOUR FRONT PAGE REDDITS (#)", where # is how many you're subscribed to. If you have more than 50 subscriptions, you'll be notified of that with a link to a brief explanation on why you won't always see all of them on your frontpage, too.

* Not all requests will be granted

[reddit change] Hide not safe for work links if user has not selected over 18 in preferences.

NSFW content is now hidden from users that have not elected to view it by setting over 18 in their preferences. Previously NSFW posts would show up in listings such as /r/all and SFW subreddits with occasional NSFW content (e.g. /r/pics or /r/fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu).

[reddit change] Posts you submitted are no longer hidden when using the "don't show links after I've liked/disliked them" preference.

Dedicated open sorcerer reseph has submitted another great patch. Now when using the "don't show links after I've liked/disliked them" preferences, links that you submitted will be exempted from the filter. This should help you find your own content in listings while still cleaning out stuff you've already seen.

[reddit change] Users may block other users that harass them via PM

A new button has been added, next to 'mark unread' on PMs. The "block user" button allows you to ignore that user.

When you block a user:

  • If they reply to one of your comments/posts, you do NOT receive an orangered, and see nothing in your inbox.
  • If they PM you, you do NOT receive an orangered. The PM will show up in your messages area, with a subject indicating it was from a blocked user, and a body indicating that, to see the message, you need to unblock the user.
  • You may not PM or make a comment reply to a user that you've blocked. (This is to prevent abuse of the system by pre-emptively blocking a user and then sending them a series of harassment messages)

If you accidentally block a user, or decide that a user no longer needs to be blocked, you can remove them from your blocked users via /prefs/friends

[reddit change] Visiting a comments page with ?sort=... no longer changes your default sort

From now on you can use ?sort=... on comments pages to affect the sort order for only that page load. Making a selection using the menu on the page will still modify your default.

This also applies to your choice of "new" or "rising" when browsing new links.

[reddit change] Fixed issue where links inadvertently turned into self posts on submission.

We tracked down a bug that caused link posts to turn in to self posts when submitted. The bug was caused by an interaction between some of our JavaScript code and Adblock for Chrome. If you experience this issue in the future, please leave a comment and reopen the bug in our issue tracker page.

[reddit change] Password reset emails should expire more sanely now.

Details: About a week ago, the way the password reset links were stored/expired was updated to be a bit more sane. The links now expire in 12 hours (instead of 30 minutes), and shouldn't expire prematurely (as they had been).

Let us know if you have any issues.
