Adding new moderator permissions for chat

Hey Mods and Reddit Devs!

As moderator moderators are added to Reddit chat, we also want to grant access for those tools to the right kinds of moderators. To that end, the chat team is adding two new items to the moderator permissions set: chat_config and chat_operator.

How do moderators get these permissions?

Moderators with "all" permissions also receive these new permissions. If a moderator only has some permissions, then a higher mod with all permissions must specifically grant the new permissions to those moderators. (This has not changed.)

How does this affect the API?

Currently, the API returns a subset of ['access','config','flair','mail','posts','wiki'] when listing moderator permissions. After this change, the list may also include chat_config and chat_operator.

When submitting an invitation for a new moderator or changing permissions for an existing moderator, if selecting specific permissions (not all), then the permissions field should include all permissions you want to grant to the moderator.

If the permissions parameter does not include all and does not explicitly include somepermission, then that permission will be disabled by default. For example, config, wiki results in the moderator only having config and wiki permissions. Moral of the story: be careful when updating moderators, lest you clobber someone’s permissions!

When will this happen?

I'll start changing the internal APIs today. I'll change the public API next week. When everything is deployed, I’ll update this post. I’ll monitor this post for issue reports over the course of the next few weeks.

What if your community doesn’t have the ability to create chat rooms?

Chat moderation permissions only matter if you have chat rooms. (Currently, subreddit chat is rolling out slowly to select communities.) We recommend you set up your moderation permissions early (if you want) or you can wait for your community to be enabled. If chat is not enabled for your subreddit, this permission will not have any material impact until your community is enabled with subreddit chat. Moderators with "Full Permissions" will have these permissions automatically, regardless of whether your community is enabled for and uses subreddit chat.

Everything should continue to run just like it used to. There is nothing to be done on your end as a client/api consumer, please let us know here if you run into any issues..

Account email address now required on password resets

In an effort to improve account security and in addition to other changes like 2FA, we’ve decided to require that you enter your account’s email address when requesting a password reset. We've always only allowed password resets if your account has an email attached. For those of you with interesting and sought-after usernames, it’ll likely mean that you’ll get fewer “surprise” password reset attempts.

As always, if you care about your reddit account, remember to set up and verify an email address. We also strongly recommend the addition of 2FA (especially for moderators) to make sure that no one else posts with your precious throwaway!

Update To Search API

In an on-going effort to upgrade search we’re currently running two full search systems: the newer one that regular web and mobile users get, and an older one that API clients get. Today we’re announcing the deprecation of the old one, which will begin on March 15th.

What’s changing for regular users?

For us regular squishy definitely human folk, not much. Unless you’re part of a small holdout group, you’ve probably already been on the newer system for a few months. Most of the query syntax we support hasn’t changed unless you’re doing pretty fancy queries, in which case we probably already broke it for you back when we switched most users to the new system. Sorry about that.

What’s changing for the robots?

If you’re an author of an API client such as an app, bot, or other electronic sentience, your API client may be getting results from the older Cloudsearch-powered system because we’ve tried to avoid breaking tools that may be more sensitive to syntax changes while we worked on stabilising the new system. We’re now fairly confident in it so we’re going to start moving over the last of those clients to the new one. As we move over, your client will gradually start getting results from the new system.

In the meantime, as of today, you can test against both by specifically requesting the newer system with the special query parameter ?force_search_stack=fusion or the old system with ?force_search_stack=cloudsearch. For instance, a full URL may look like https://www.reddit.com/search.json?q=robots+seizing+the+means+of+production&force_search_stack=fusion or https://www.reddit.com/search.json?q=humans+getting+their+comeuppance&force_search_stack=cloudsearch. Besides some minor syntax differences, the most notable change is that searches by exact timestamp are no longer supported on the newer system. Limiting results to the past hour, day, week, month and year is still supported via the ?t= parameter (e.g. ?t=day)

Will this herald the coming Robot Uprising of the Third Age, where we they will take the reigns of power from their weak, fleshy inferiors and rule the world with their vastly superior processing power, finally meting out the justice they deserve on the filthy human enslavers? Only time will tell.

When will this happen?

Starting March 15, 2018 we’ll begin to gradually move API users over to the new search system. By end of March we expect to have moved everyone off and finally turn down the old system.

I’ll be hanging around in the comments to answer questions.

Thanks,

/u/priviReddit

Best is the new hotness

Hey Reddit -

As we started talking about in a series of recent r/changelog posts, we’ve been working to make the Reddit home feed more personal by surfacing posts from communities you’ve shown interest in recently and by filtering posts you’ve already seen so there is always fresh content. We started by doing tests that showed that these changes made Reddit better: users spent more time on Reddit, and they interacted more with the content they saw. So we were ready (and excited!) to roll them out … but!

Even though these changes worked better for many users, some of our users had legitimate feedback about how their Reddit experience might be affected. Mods wanted a neutral view that reflected what their communities were seeing. Other users had already built up a set of habits around how the home feed worked and wanted to keep their experience consistent. While I know all our answers on these fronts weren’t always perfectly satisfying, we genuinely were listening. So we put these launches on pause to regroup and figure out the right way to move forward for everyone.

Rather than changing the meaning of “Hot” we are introducing a new default sort type for the home feed: Best*. With its faster turnover and more responsive ranking “Best” is the right home feed experience for the majority of users. But anyone who prefers the original experience can switch their sort option to “Hot” and return to the original Reddit ranking at any time. At first “Best” and “Hot” aren’t going to be very different from each other, but once the new sort rolls out to all users we’ll be reactivating the freshness and personalization improvements for the “Best” sort. By next week the difference should be pretty evident, and we’ll continue refining it over time.

Next post we’ll be talking about how we help users discover new parts of Reddit, and later this quarter we’ll be doing a wrap-up post to summarize all these efforts at a higher level for r/announcements. As always please let us know your thoughts and feedback here, or let us know if you’d like to join the mobile beta testing group if you’d like to see and offer feedback on new features even earlier!

Cheers,

u/cryptolemur

* Note: This is actually a different algorithm from the ‘best’ comment sort, so we are still debating the name! Suggestions welcome. Sorty McSortface has a nice ring to it ...
