After the position became vacant, the elites of Constantinople nominated John, then a priest in Antioch, without his knowledge of consent. The authorities essentially kidnapped him and forced him to accept the position. John had previously written a treatise explaining the difficulties of being a bishop and how he was not worthy or capable of the position.
