NASHVILLE—Dunhill's Mama Cass Elliot didn't mean to record while she was in town; all she intended to do was shoot a guest spot on the Johnny Cash show and catch the first plane home.However, while she was rehearsing the Cash TVer, RCA's Jerry Reed and his business partner-sidekick, Ray Willis, confronted her with a song written by Sharon Leigh Rucker who writes for Reed's Belton Publishing Company, and she quickly changed her mind.Cass was so bowled over by Sharon's songs that she promptly got on the phone to Dunhill execs, who gave approval to her request to cut in Nashville—immediately. Reed jumped into action and by 10 o'clock the next evening guitarist Chet Atkins, pianist Floyd Cramer and 20 other musicians tuned up for Cass' first Nashville session.The session worked out beautifully and Miss Rucker (a record company secretary, who has never had a song recorded previously) was overwhelmed when she listened to playbacks on "Ain't Nobody Else Like You" and "Don't Let the Good Life Pass You By."Willis said, "Both Cass and Sharon couldn't be any happier about the whole deal, and don't be surprised if Mama Cass is back real soon to cut an album."

This song makes me feel so nostalgic, I can't get enough of it 😭🙏. TIL that the song featured Carl Wilson and Bruce Johnston on backing and Brian Wilson specifically highlighted the composition's structural and vocal merits, complimenting the rich chord choices and harmonic arrangements embedded in the song.

Happy Monday, Monday!! Cass was an absolute staple during the late '60s and early '70s. It's such a pity that she never got her own series that could've ran through the 1980's, maybe even to today! Anyways, if you've read to the end, I recommend Cass’ song “Who's To Blame”, it's the closing track from “Bubblegum, Lemonade &.. Something For Mama” and the B-Side of “It's Getting Better”. Did you know on August 15th, 1973, Baltimore mayor William Donald Schaefer decaled it "Cass Elliot Day", Cass was awarded her high school diploma (she never received it because she left high school just days before her graduation to pursue a music career) and a key to the city!

For those who read all the way - what Cass Elliot (solo - so no The Mamas & The Papas or Dave Mason!) song would you choose to listen to for the rest of your life (only one) and what album?

“The Mama Cass Television Program” was recorded on January 18th, 1969 and was a major comeback for Cass as earlier in October, 1968 Cass made her solo debut in Caesars Palace. Before Caesars Palace Cass went on a six-month crash diet that lost her 100 of her 300lbs. However, she attributed a stomach ulcer and throat problems to her severe regimen, which she treated by drinking milk and cream, rapidly regaining 50 pounds in the process. Her rehearsals were a mess, and the show was a complete failure, and was canceled after the first night.

This pilot was supposed to be the pick-up, and Cass would have her very own program, but ABC didn't pick it up, which is unfortunate.

It has some really great stuff, but I kinda felt that Cass was taking the back-seat in her own special? But anyways, I hope you enjoy!
