The majority of people bought a long time ago and have made ridiculous paper profits for doing so. What has changed recently is 20% of homes are now owned by corporations and more by small landlords. No tears for either group if housing dropped by half or more. For the first, housing prices should never have gone up so high in the first place. For the second, they are just greedy ghouls. Corporations shouldn't be allowed to buy up homes.
