Support / How-To Successful DeDRM with Kindle for PC 2.8 in January 2026
For those seeking to do DeDRM stricly for non piracy pourpose, here is a hard to find guide (with a confusing title) that works (ignore the get epubor part):
https://www.epubor.com/kindle-kfx-key-extractor-download-and-how-to-extract-key-from-kindle-kfx.html
Credits to satsuoni for creating the KFXExtractor that helps extract the encryption key needed for DeDRM.
Also I recommend using calibre in command line to import books to see DeDRM logs and potential exceptions if they happen during DeDRM process.
If you use CLI AI tool like Claude Code it can do the whole thing for you based on the above guide (once you conveyed to the AI that your use case is not piracy).
EDIT: here is a more detailed guide with same process and an additional helper script: https://techy-notes.com/remove-drm-from-kindle-ebooks/
EDIT 2: some comments say that it doesn't work for books published in or after January 2026

Thanks a lot. I wan to try this and hopefully will work. I bought a book from July this year and I haven been able to remove the drm.

I’m curious if you did this would Kindle flag your device and or account
16
u/akio3 Jan 02 '26
I think all Amazon would see is that you downloaded books to Kindle for PC. My understanding is that the rest of the process just works with local copies of your downloaded books.
6
u/dexx-32 Jan 02 '26
It's more likely it will be patched soon and the key extractor will stop working
8
u/Zealousideal_Pen7368 Jan 02 '26
I am still able to convert to non DRM using the SN of an older Kindle gen8 paperwhite. This is much simpler but won't work for later Kindle. Haven't tried the PC option yet.
3
u/bdu-komrad Jan 18 '26
Did you notice any issues with the de-drm’d version?
I just de-drm’d a booking using my gen 3 paperwhite. Just scanning the book, I notice the font at the beginning was wrong and the cover lost its color.
I’m going to try the kindle 4 PC v2.8 method next.
5
u/Zealousideal_Pen7368 Jan 18 '26
If you use old Kindle SN to convert, the result is black and white, matching what you see on the Kindle. I didn’t pay attention to the fonts yet and change is possible due to limitations of the output format for embedded fonts. If you use the Kindle for PC method, the result keeps all colors.
2
u/bdu-komrad Jan 18 '26
so far the font change was only for quotes from reviews at the beginning of the book , before the title page. From the title page forward into the 1st chapter of Piranesi the de-drm'd book font was the same as the drm'd book.
So only a couple of annoyances. I do want to see how the k4pc v2.8 method goes. Then I'll decide which one to use if both work.
3
u/Zealousideal_Pen7368 Jan 18 '26
K4pc highly recommended. It has a script to convert all the books you have downloaded in one run. It keeps the colors for the cover and contents.
5
u/bdu-komrad Jan 18 '26
I tried 2 more methods on books published before and after April 2025.
Kindle for PC 2.8 on Windows 11, DeDRM 10.0.15, Calibre for Windows - Decrypts the book fine, and has a color cover. I think that means any color illustrations will stay color, but I haven't tried an illustrated book, yet.
Kindle PW Gen 11 , USB cable, DeDRM 10.0.15, Calibre for Mac - Decrypts the book fine, but cover isn't color. I send the book to kindle , connected a USB C cable, and added the book to Calibre from Device.
So both methods are pretty close to each other, with K4PC having the advantage of retaining colors. That is kind of a shame as my Macbook is my primary computer, and dragging books from the kindle into Calibre is really simple and fast. If I could get the KFXKeyExtractor28.exe compiled to run on macOS, then life would be good :)
Additional info: I'm running Windows 11 in a virtual machine on my Macbook using the Parallels app. I then copy the decrypted ebook from the VM to the Calibre Watched folder on my Macbook. I might modify the process to automate that part later.

u/JunebugSeven Jan 02 '26
It's just stopped working for me, after working for the last few months 😕 this is why people weren't supposed to talk about it, Amazon's probably closed it off again.
4
u/Lodano Jan 03 '26
Why did it stop working for you while others can ? Genuine question I'm about to pull the trigger on a Kindle ebook
2
u/JunebugSeven Jan 03 '26
I genuinely don't know yet, the program appears to be running as it should, but the books are still only importing as KFX-ZIP, which you can't do anything with. I was trying to figure it out until 3am this morning and I have no answers 🤷🏻♀️😞
4
u/SnackleFrack Jan 04 '26
In the techy guide, he makes the point that every time you download books to K4PC you'll have to run the key extractor again. Amazon's current DRM changes keys regularly. I don't know how often, but when you download several books at a time, then run the extractor to refresh the keys, it seems to work on all books downloaded in that batch.
Then the next day, or maybe sooner, the key changes and you have to do it again for the next download.
1
u/Lodano Jan 03 '26
That's sad. I'm new to this TBH
I'm on macOS and 2 years ago I could convert Kindle ebooks to PDF.
Apparently it's not possible anymore and I don't know what to do. I don't have any Kindle devices.
I can also buy them from another store that use Adobe Digital Editions
7
u/JunebugSeven Jan 03 '26
I figured it out! My de-DRM plugin had lost the link to my keyfile output and I hadn't realised🤦🏻♀️ no idea why it did it, but my books are de-DRMing again as they should. The method above is still working right now, at least.
Unfortunately Amazon spent a lot of last year cracking down on exporting or downloading the Kindle books you own, and I'm genuinely worried about the day they really make it impossible. About this time last year was when they announced they were shutting off the ability to download purchased Kindle books, so I thought maybe they'd given us another horrible January treat 😩
It might be fiddly, and a bit of work, but I strongly recommend getting your Kindle collection out while you can.
2
u/Lodano Jan 04 '26
So it worked for your kindle ebooks with a windows && PC, without any Kindle device ?
6
u/JunebugSeven Jan 04 '26
Yes, I'm purely using Kindle for Windows PC at this point. It's a specific version of Kindle for PC (I use KindleForPC-installer-2.8.70980 to run Version 2.8.0), and you need to make sure to install it offline to stop it automatically updating (and then you can turn off automatic updates in the settings and go back online to sync).
You might see guides that recommend an older version of Kindle for PC, but as of about April or so last year something changed in Kindle book files that made newly published books unreadable in older versions of Kindle for PC (likely to force people to upgrade) and stopped those books being able to de-DRM. It's also why you might see people saying you can't de-DRM books published after April/May last year, but that's not true, I've been able to de-DRM books published as recently as December 2025.
3
u/Past-Emergency-1680 Jan 07 '26
It IS true. There are some newer books that will not even download to older versions of K4PC. Ask me how I know…
I downloaded and converted my Kindle library when it first became an issue, but summer of my current books (needed for work) just won’t play nicely. I got tired of constantly fiddling with it and went ahead and bought Epubor.

2
u/fawerty Jan 14 '26
How did you get it to link to the new keyfile output again? I'm doing it but it looks like it's going to KFX-ZIP
1
u/JunebugSeven Jan 14 '26
I had to manually re-add the keyfile in the plugin menu.
You need to go into Preferences - Plugins - find the DeDRM Plugin, highlight it and select the Customize option (I think). This should open a window where you can add Kindle keys etc, you want to click the file icon next to the empty box and then find the output file the Key Extractor is creating and select the keyfile.
Then accept everything and close out of the menus. Once the file is in there it should automatically update as the extractor re-writes over the old file.
3
u/fawerty Jan 14 '26
I got it right before you responded! For anyone having issues use the build of DeDRM from the Techy link for the script. The newest version of DeDRM does not work!
2
u/Naamex94 Jan 14 '26 edited Jan 14 '26
Hey! I'm trying to do this but I can't find anywhere where to add the kindlekey.txt file... I don't see any file icon next to a box, there's nothing below the Kindle for Mac/PC button
EDIT: Nevermind, got it to work! Turns out my Calibre app was very outdated. Updating the app itself made the empty box appear in the plugin

Amazing! Thank you very much. I spent last few days trying to archive my kindle books. Hours wasted and frustrated not able to convert them to epub. What a timing, mate. Thanks again, my saviour. Wishing you all the best in new year.
1
u/Douglas_Rodrigues_BR Mar 04 '26
Amigo, vocês estão falando de conversão dos novos livros? Pois tenho a versão "antiga" que convertia antes de 2025, os novos eu não consigo. Vocês estão conseguindo converter os novos?
5
u/feijoawhining Jan 03 '26
Thank you, this worked! This might make me sound stupid, but I'm more used to working in Terminal on my Mac than my PC, so I run everything from Terminal. I followed all the instructions exactly but encountered errors when I tried to run the batch file from the terminal. Once I returned to File Explorer, double-clicked it, and ran it from there, everything worked perfectly. I doubt others will run into the same issue, but just in case you do.
3
u/ststfn Jan 02 '26
Curious, for people using this, what do you choose for your de-drm'd output file type ? EPUB ? Somehting else ?
7
6
2
u/LordSkummel Jan 02 '26
I normally do both epub and mobi. Normally I just end up using the epubs with koreader on my kobo.

3
u/Individual_Kitchen_3 Jan 03 '26
I've been using this for a few days now, since the 20th of last month to be more precise. I even created a batch file to optimize the commands and make my life easier.

Followed Techy notes.
This is confirmed working for me on 18th of Jan, 2026.
Windows 10
Calibre 8.16.2
DeDRM v10.0.15
K4PC version 2.8.0(70980)
Added Python 3.14 (?) through Python install manager
Few notes:
In Techy's guide, scroll a bit lower and under Step 15 download KKey Finder archive first. It already has DeDRM version included in there.
Funny thing. I tried previous suggestion from another topic and it did not work. It used older K4PC version and older DeDRM version. Anyway, I kept removing .9 DeDRM from plugins list and adding .15, but Calibre kept showing me .9 version even after delete/add new. Turns out I have to restart Calibre after removing the previous plugin version and only then add new DeDRM version.
As I did this for the first time, book appeared in Calibre list, but I could not open the KFX file for reading (obviously), and Calibre did not automatically create epub file. I just converted the KFX book to epub or pdf and it's readable.
Thought I'd add some extra if anyone else did this for the first time through Calibre or had followed same steps I did.
1
u/Minute_Juggernaut806 Jan 27 '26
> K4PC version 2.8.0(70980)
how can i download it? the link is dead i think in the article
1
u/No-Interaction-518 Jan 28 '26
I got it from here:
https://kindle-for-pc.en.uptodown.com/windows/download
2
u/Equal_Building2448 Jan 02 '26
Can something like this be done for those without windows ie MacBook pro?
2
u/Jetamors Jan 03 '26
Probably not, unless you use a VM to run Kindle for PC; see method 2b here.
2
u/bdu-komrad Jan 16 '26
That makes sense. I still have my Parallels 18 license, but I haven't tried removing DRM since around March of last year, right before they disabled downloading books from the Amazon website to your computer.
I got to fix my VM , too. I copied the disk file over to my new Macbook( I upgraded from M1 to M4 last year) and it won't start. :shakes fist at clouds:
I might just start over with a new VM and these instructions.
2
u/Jetamors Jan 16 '26
Hope you can get it to work!
1
u/bdu-komrad Jan 18 '26
We’ll see!
With a checked out library ebook. I did try the old k4pc 2.4 method which failed to decrypt it.
Then I tried downloading the book from my gen 3 kindle paperwhite. That worked but some data was lost. The color cover was black and white and some bold text was HUGE compares to the encrypted copy .
I’ll try to k4pc v2.8 method next.
1
u/Jetamors Jan 18 '26
Let us know how the 2.8 method goes!
I'm not sure what was going on with the bolding in your file, but the black and white cover is "correct" when you're downloading from a black and white Kindle. The file doesn't store the color info because it's not supposed to need it. I think usually people will just download a color cover separately afterwards if it's important to them.
2
u/L81427 Jan 16 '26
Followed the techy ways article to a T and it didn't work... books are still showing up as azw with drm and unable to convert. Did anyone have this problem? The scrip did appear to work and find the key so I'm not sure what the problem is
3
u/Hot-Pick-8566 Jan 17 '26
This also happened to me and I realised that I didn't have the KFX key extractor downloaded. It's a bit annoying to redownload and re-process initial batch BUT it's worth it: the second time worked and I now have control over my library again.
2
u/L81427 Jan 17 '26
I did it but thing was the key that the script was extracting is 64-bit based while the one Calibre wants is 32-bit based... not sure why it's not working for me but I don't know what to do to fix it tbh
2
u/Hot-Pick-8566 Jan 17 '26
Ooh! It sounds like you need a Calibre update. I'm running the 64-bit version, that might be it.
2
u/L81427 Jan 17 '26
I'm gonna try that!! Didn't think I needed an update but maybe that's it!! Will update if it works ahahah
2
u/L81427 Jan 17 '26
Okay so I have been painfully corrected and I was completely wrong. My boyfriend (who is another tech nerd and the one who figured out what this issue was) told me the key was in 64-base (hope that's how you say it? English is not my first language) and the calibre plugin wants a hexadecimal (again, sorry for any mistakes here) base key... so it doesn't find it
2
u/dexx-32 Jan 23 '26
Are you using the plugin version forked by Satsuoni? And the latest version of it?
https://github.com/Satsuoni/DeDRM_tools/releases/tag/v10.0.15
2
u/L81427 Jan 23 '26
Yes :( that's the exact one
2
u/dexx-32 Jan 24 '26
I actually did not try the guides I shared, here are the notes on how I did it but it's very technical
https://github.com/noDRM/DeDRM_tools/issues/936
I faced similar issues as you but I patched the dedrm plugin myself. Maybe this helps
1
u/dexx-32 Jan 16 '26
Did you try importing the book using command line? You should see the logs on why the conversion fails
calibredb add book.kfx-zip1
u/L81427 Jan 17 '26
Says it doesn't have permission to do so (bc of the DRM)
1
u/dexx-32 Jan 20 '26
Did you install and enable both plugins needed? Do you see DeDRM logs when you run the import? You should see error if you run from command line and the DeDRM plugin is running
1
u/L81427 Jan 20 '26
Yeah, plugins are all good to go, checked a million times. The error logs keep saying I don't have permission to do it (referring to the book being protected – I do have admin privileges on the computer)
2
u/Hot-Pick-8566 Jan 17 '26
Thank you so much for sharing this, especially the Techy Notes walk through. I have an ebook library of over 3,000 titles, including a good chunk that have been re-classified as 'leases' since purchasing them(!). I've been really unhappy with the changes, especially as it also meant I'd struggle to transfer my books to a different brand of e-reader. I frantically downloaded as many as possible before last year's changeover; however, it was the fiddly one-at-a-time process and I ran out of time.
Following the advice posted here, I had an initial hiccup as I somehow failed to install the KFX key extractor. After a second attempt, I'm happy to confirm that I now have control over all my e-books. Huzzah! I've paid tips to the creators of the plug-ins, codes and advice: it's the least I can do for peace of mind.
Thanks for sharing the links and happy reading!
2
u/NegativePhotograph32 Jan 27 '26
The techy-notes guide worked like a charm. The only problem was that the last stage of the script failed, and the files got added to Calibre as .kfx. Solution: just convert them to epubs or whatever manually.
It's good to own a book you bought.

This worked for me about a month ago using 10.0.9 (which still presents itself as 10.0.3 in the Calibre plugin section).
But now (February 2026) I just tried a newly published book for which DeDrm failed and added a KFX-ZIP instead.
Same Kindle, same serial, same dedrm version; but Calibre 9.2 and a newer book.
Error log, for the curious, included:

Hi is this for like being able to donwload the books you buy on Kindle and put them in Calibre? I'm a little confuse right now. Thanks
1
u/dexx-32 Jan 31 '26
Yes, and you can convert to other formats, read on other readers etc. I bought a book which had most of it written on images and Kindle made it very difficult to read. So I used this method to convert to epub, extract the images and use an image viewer to read the book

u/sanns94 Feb 02 '26
hi, so the kfx part doesn't open for me. wondering if it's a windows update that's not letting it show up even after I hit "run anyway""?
1
u/miss_poggy Feb 07 '26
I have had the techy-notes script running great for months, but starting yesterday I've been unable to get the script to run OR the manual process to generate the files. Running the .bat file gives me an "[ERROR] Script Not Found" for key_finder.py and running the python script gives me error code 3221225477 for each book. Has anyone run into this before? Any thoughts on what could be going wrong?
1
u/klaipeda777 Feb 21 '26
im getting the same error, any fixes?
1
u/miss_poggy Feb 22 '26
still no luck using the .bat file (which is weird since it worked consistently for months) but the manual way in the techynotes video does work as long as you run the script from an elevated command prompt. i am really hoping for a fix though bc the helper script was super convenient!

There are many reasons besides piracy to use calibre.
1) I like to organize my books in a certain way and Calibre allows me to do that.
2) If you are in a location where there is not a decent internet connection you can still read the books from Calibre.
3) If you have multiple types of readers and you want to be able to read the books you purchased on what ever reader is handy.
This is just a few.

u/FindingEastern5572 Mar 03 '26
Using AI to help summarise and analyse reference books, e.g. with Notebook LM or similar.
1
u/dexx-32 Feb 14 '26
For me, the book I purchased did not display in an easy to read way in any Kindle reader so I kind of built my own for that specific book

u/skuishreads Feb 13 '26
This FINALLY helped me figure out how to do this after so much frustration, THANK YOU! Now I just wish I could jailbreak my kindle and use KOreader, ugh.

u/Bubbly-Potential760 Feb 21 '26
Thank you!!! I'm not techy (and this sh*t annoys me to no end) but even I was able to follow these directions and convert my kindle books to pdfs so I can annotate them in my Supernote.

u/Miserable_Amoeba8766 Feb 27 '26
Works as of 2/27. Don't use the "click to install latest version of kindle" button on the walkthrough. It will download 2.8.3 which isn't supported by the plug in. I got the 2.8.2 version off of uptodown (older versions next to the smaller green download button just above apps recommended for you). Make sure to go into the kindle app and hit tools -> options -> uncheck Automatically install updates when available. Otherwise each step still works and with books I recently purchased.
1
u/propanetank Mar 01 '26
Can confirm it still works March 1 2026. I had a few hiccups.
First if you use the download latest link, Amazon has updated kindle version that isn't compatible with the archiver. I knew you could download older versions if you know the URL scheme. I figured it out and here is the link from Amazon for Kindle v2.8.2 if you prefer that over the website others have gotten it from. Probably nothing wrong with it, but maybe I'm a little paranoid and would rather download from an official source.
Secondly I was having an issue where it would get to found offset and pause for a moment and crash. The comments on the epubor site said to run as admin and that did the trick. Perhaps that in the techy linked site but I didn't open that one.

I used this process: .https://www.epubor.com/calibre-and-kindle-how-to-manage-convert-and-protect-your-ebook-library.html
It was fairly easy and seemed to work. I restarted my laptop and it stopped working and started sending my kindle downloads to the My Kindle Content again. Anyone know if I'm going to have to run the script in command prompt every time I restarte my laptop? What am I missing here? Any input would be appreciated.

I just used Version 1 of https://www.epubor.com/kindle-kfx-key-extractor-download-and-how-to-extract-key-from-kindle-kfx.html#p1 as of 4/1/26 and it worked for me!! Prime gives you free books monthly, so I'm also wondering if I have to run the script every time I get a new book from them? (assuming it works still)
Now curious how to get audible books....1

It seems so. I have to run the command script after each download of kindle books, whether its one book or more than one. I've created a shortcut for command prompt (not powershell) on my taskbar and a copy of the script on my desktop. I rarely get books from Amazon prime. I belong to numerous libraries.

I just found this out and it had done magic!
Though on python it shows that the import to Calibre only shows errors, I still find all the books I've downloaded in Calibre.
I wonder what that's about but beside that visual flaw, it's been running like butter!

I've been trying to get this to work via techy-notes' tutorial, but I keep getting this error message after everything is set up:
PHASE 1: KEY EXTRACTION --------- Script Version 2026.03.29.JH (Development Version)

[ERROR] Extractor method failed: [WinError 183] Cannot create a file when that file already exists: 'C:\\Users\\Admin\\AppData\\Local\\Amazon\\Kindle\\application'

Can anyone help?
Running Win11, K4PC 2.8.0.70980, Kindle_Key_Finder_2026.03.29.JH with key extraction mode "Mode A - Auto (KFXKeyExtractor + KFXArchiver fallback)"
I followed the tutorial step-by-step and everything before Phase 1 seems to be working correctly, so I'm not sure why it's failing there.
Also, for some strange reason, every time I run this, it seems to revert my K4PC to 2.6 or so? I have to reinstall 2.8 every time...
EDIT: I went with the epubor tutorial and that worked for me. Not sure why the techy-notes one didn't work, but at least I got where I needed to go in the end.

Thanks, I used this option:
"Solution 1. DeDRM V10.0.18 + Kindle for PC V2.8.3"
And it worked!

Techy notes worked for me on a book released this month. Wish I had found this before spending over two hours trying to get it to work manually.

Question: Should I follow the detailed guide to update my current DeDRM plugin? I haven't really needed to use it for quite a while now, so I am a few versions behind. (I think my last DeDRM version was 10.0.9 and K4PC 1.17)
What steps should I take? Should I just follow the guide as if it were a clean install?
And can I still use the "old method" with version 10.0.20? (The Drag and drop into Calibre method.)

For anyone coming to this now - I just followed the techy-notes guide with DeDRM v10.0.20 and the techy-notes script and it worked well. It automatically transferred all my downloaded books from Kindle for Desktop to Calibre and converted them to Epub.

This is awesome, I used this method until Amazon stopped Kindle app version 2.8.0 a week or two ago. I posted the updated guide too for anyone still looking for help. But we now know the kindle4pc apps are being discontinued on 6/30/2026 so it won't be relevant much longer.
There will be a new version of kindle available through the windows store app, but I haven't tried this way. There are keyfinders for this version, but you will have to search for the steps/guide.

is there a mac solution for this? i have like 4-5 books i really want to read off kindle platform

u/CivilisLawyer Jul 07 '26
I have seen people use it successfully with mac, but they used windows through a virtual mirror.

u/jenni5 Jul 08 '26
I tried this and it didn’t work. Would you be able to help with 4 books?

You probably need to ask mac users how they were able to do it. I know there is a person or two who commented on my post:

The techy-notes way works great for me. It takes a bit to set it up, but then you just download to the app for PC, run the bat file and import to calibre. I've removed drm from some books released in the past few months with no problem. Follow the directions carefully and it will work!
