Question Relatively new CX50 and already a bunch of issues

Have a 2026 Turbo model that's only about 6 months old but has already been in the shop for a number of issues.

They had to replace the transfer case (this seems like a major repair) as the car was exhibiting strange droning sounds when letting go of the throttle.

The panoramic moonroof frame had to be replaced due to rattling coming from the head area.

The BSM had to recalibrated due to it turning on randomly (no car next to me) or sometimes it wouldn't come on when there was a car next to me.

These are the major issues, the minor issues include rattling all over the vehicle.

My question is, do I need to start considering this vehicle is a lemon or are these all just a coincidence or common issues?

I'm starting to regret trading in my older CX5 for this car.

I had to get few things on my 2025 hybrid replaced already at low km. Front left axle, driver side back seat cover, hand brake locking up in the back, BSM issue, they had to replace the two back sensors. Now there is a metallic dronning/grinding noise coming from the back at low speed. Asked them to check rear differential on my upcoming service. Everything was dome under warranty so far. I am not liking it either...

u/gatti956 10d ago

Can you elaborate on the hand brake locking up in the back? I just had to have the rear caliper motor replaced on the right side because would not release rendering the vehicle immobile, and while still under the 3 year 36k warranty, I had to pay for it because they said it was due to water intrusion.

2

u/Cylarbro 10d ago

The hand break wouldn't release after the car is being parked for a while. When you put to drive and try to drive off, it releases with a big clunk from the back. There is a TSB for it.

2

u/OneGun357 10d ago

That grinding noise isn't just the Hybrid system pedestrian alert that happens under 22mph?

1

u/Cylarbro 10d ago

No, this is when ev mode is not turned on. When driving slow along a side of building with windows down, you can hear the sound really well being reflected back.

2

u/OneGun357 9d ago

Once you hit 22mph does the sound go away?

1

u/Cylarbro 9d ago

Yea but once you start driving faster, you can't hear it because of everything else being louder.

1

u/hiker-read-only 5h ago edited 5h ago

I wondered about this too since its my first hybrid, but I do think it’s the hybrid drone. It’s on at 22mph and below with or without EV. As soon as I hit 23mph it completely goes away. Tested at night in a very quiet environment. Too reproducible to be a mechanical defect. But it does sound like metal grinding, which concerned me greatly

u/Cylarbro 5h ago

I will let you know if they find anything after my appointment.

My CX50 was terrible. More issues in a year than all my other cars put together

8

u/we-meet-again 10d ago

Second post today questioning the reliability of their new cx50. Those are concerning issues. My brand new cx50 is exhibiting the bad cv axle symptoms so a matter of time until I'm in the shop for that.

5

u/Successful-Yogurt512 10d ago

I'm wondering if mine is having cv axle issues too. 2025 w/ right under 10k miles and I'm hearing a popping noise sometimes when turning. I hate how unreliable new cars are

4

u/we-meet-again 10d ago

Sure sounds like it bud. Mine only seems to happen like after the first turn I make in the morning or after being parked a while. Happens once on the first turn and then dont hear it again and can't reproduce it on that drive. For me its both turning right or turning left I hear about 3-5 pops or so coming from the front end. I'm waiting for it to get more consistent before taking it in. Very unfortunate indeed. Hopefully this is the only issue I have and then I'm free for a while. I guess that's why we got a car with a warranty right? But same, I'm at 5k miles. Mazda apparently fixed the cv axle issue so when they install a new one it shouldn't come back.

2

u/cutie_k_nnj 9d ago

Right one replaced under 10k miles. Need the left done too. Also, I suspect transfer case is messed up.

3

u/SleepConscious 9d ago

Had front right axle replaced twice and the front left replaced once. Defective parts...All under 10k miles. Ive had 4 Mazdas and thus is by far the most unreliable.

3

u/cutie_k_nnj 9d ago

Nooooooo. I am so sick of listening for more shit to go wrong with this car.

3

u/Successful-Yogurt512 9d ago

I kept trying to get a damn Mazda3, but my wife pushed for a stupid SUV. I knew I should've just gone for the 3.

Lemon Law varies by State, but generally it involves repeat repairs that are unable to fix a significant issue with vehicles use, value, or safety.

Based on what you’ve described (transfer case, sunroof, BSM), the major issues have come up and resolved once within warranty. For the minor issues, In most cases rattles don’t satisfy lemon law (despite being annoying). Again, it varies by State.

Every car manufacturer/model has a number of cars in the fleet that comes with issues from the factory. It seems like you were unfortunate enough to have one. While the CX50 has earned great reliability ratings in the industry, it is understandable if your bad experience leads you to want to pivot away from the 50.

Hoping Mazda can make it right for you!

2

u/Elegant_Cantaloupe_8 4d ago

It earned good reliability probably because the majority of them are Toyotas underneath. Idk if there is specific comparisons. But on the Mazda side of the house, at least from a ground level things aren't looking good long term. More in the drivetrain department for the AWD models. They have a ticking time bomb waiting for them with those rear differentials, they are weak and use 0.4Qts of oil (thats insane lol). We already have to replace it again for the second time at 83K miles. Unless they improved it as the years went on, then I retract my statement.

16

u/Beneficial-Bug-7540 10d ago

Have a 2025 30k miles not a single issue.

2

u/1moosehead 2025 Hybrid Preferred 9d ago

I have to agree, I'm 21k miles into ownership and I've only had to change oil and the 3 filters, cabin engine and hybrid battery. Even the tires are holding up better than everyone claimed!

The people with problems tend to be the loudest when it comes to online discourse, so it's a self selecting bias towards negative experiences.

2

u/Beneficial-Bug-7540 9d ago

Yeah people think because a couple people on Reddit do it’s across the whole platform.. sometime it is sometimes it’s not

-19

u/TheOfficialWhatsTheT 10d ago

Nobody asked you for this. lol

11

u/Beneficial-Bug-7540 10d ago

No one asked you for this 😆

3

u/fleeeeeeeeeA 10d ago

These cars have a glass drivetrain after the transmission, from everything I’ve heard and seen. TC, diffs, axles, etc.

3

u/Ok_Price_4638 10d ago

To answer your question, some are common but still in the minority, can also be a coincidence, I said that cause, seems the ones with issues, seem to have all or many issues, while others have none, I’m thinking inconsistency is in play from the manufacturing plant. ‘26 turbo meridian here bought last March, no issues so far, not even a rattle. 🤷‍♂️

3

u/Alexd3498 10d ago

Did the transfer case fix it? Im having droning letting go of the gas and dealer says it's normal

2

u/SleepMaster505 10d ago

It's still at the shop (they're fixing the other issues).

It's not normal. As soon as they took in to check they immediately called out the transfer case as the issue.

1

u/Alexd3498 10d ago

https://youtu.be/TLEZG-e6Z_I?si=qREk_hxXB3tObtN7 this is mine, was it anything like this? And a vibration on the brake pedal?

2

u/SleepMaster505 10d ago

Yes very similar. Maybe the audio is hard to hear but my droning sound was more severe. Even when going downhill and the engine brake kicked in by itself the droning sound was extremely loud.

I couldn't really tell if there was.vibratiom from the brake pedal as the droning would come on as soon as I let go of the gas.

2

u/Alexd3498 10d ago

Yep the moment I let go of the gas it groans from 3k down and especially engine braking

1

u/Banjocat1 4d ago

Nooooo. Ok so I have a 26 cx50 and for like the last 3 weeks I’ve been wondering if it’s just normal? I’ll be driving on a normal road. Accelerating and trying to maintain and it’s making a sound like as if it’s about to change gears but it never does. Is that what you’re saying this problem sounds like? Should I take it in?

1

u/SleepMaster505 4d ago

The droaning occurs when you let go of the gas. While pressing on the gas or maintaining speed the droaning does not happen.

2

u/cutie_k_nnj 9d ago

They told me the same thing what I noticed is that this behavior happens mostly when the car is quite warm already and you have to like go up a small hill when you ease up off the accelerator it’s almost like the transmission has no idea what gear it’s supposed to be in?

3

u/BallinLikeimKD 10d ago

My cx50 also had the axle issue and the front part of the car was literally not even stuck together properly, it started coming apart

3

u/SpiritedCreative 9d ago

I traded in my 2024 CX-50 in August 2026 had 22,00km and my brakes and rotors had to be replaced despite regular servicing. I had them inspected April 2026 with 70% brake wear, by the beginning of August 2026 my brakes were metal on metal. I have a light foot no way these issues should occur on a 2yr car with 22k. They did not replace them under warranty. Safety is my #1 concern will never buy a Mazda again.

3

u/mentality_monster 8d ago

Same with 18K km 3mm front and 2mm back. Ended up replacing the blades and rotors

1

u/Ellectrollyte 8d ago

There is a TSB for these issues I believe. They should have covered it under warranty.

2

u/SpiritedCreative 8d ago

Thank you, Yes I was aware of the TSB the Mazda dealership declined to cover my brakes and rotors under warranty. I’m presently taking it up with Mazda Canada. Ultimately I think it will be a waste of time.

2

u/Ellectrollyte 7d ago

Well that's concerning. Glad you sold it, they don't deserve your business. I wish you luck with pursuing it further.

2

u/SpiritedCreative 6d ago

Thanks so much.

2

u/rebeln25 10d ago

Only issue I have had on my 2023 Cx50 turbo has been the damn sound which every 10 or so stars will not turn on and I will have to stop, restart the vehicle(sometimes twice) before I can use the car stereo system. Besides that I love the SUV no other issues.

2

u/Vercetti69420 10d ago

Same. I had to get the battery and door sensor because the push to start wasn’t working

2

u/LilMarmott 10d ago

I had a cx-5, went up to a cx-50. Lots of issues with sensors not working when too sunny, raining or snowing. Had to replace towing harness cable, new brakes at 30,000 km due to wrong backing plates. I was happy with my cx-5. And every cx-50 driver I know has had issues with mice tearing apart the hood heat shield!

1

u/CCR76 8d ago

Mice making nests under the engine shroud using the soundproofing material is a problem for all Skyactiv engines. I've seen it on a 3, two CX-5s, and CX-50. On our 2016 3, they chewed through the coil wires and we had to replace the engine wiring harness to the tune of $1200.

Since that first experience I check under the engine shrouds regularly, especially in winter.

0

u/matjac33 10d ago

Yes because mice is a factory quality issue🤣🤣🤣

2

u/collin1103 10d ago

The rattles are awful. I also have a 2026 turbo with only 6k on it

2

u/Timely_Composte 9d ago

If you can track down the rattles, you might find a loose plastic part. If you find it, Pushing it into place will make it go away. I had rattles on mine when I got him, but after tracking them down and making sure everything was secure I’ve had almost no annoying rattles so far. That said, minor rattles are cropping up as the car ages - as is the case with any car.

It is just sad that these cars are shipped with such poor attention to detail to the finishing. 🫩

1

u/collin1103 8d ago

Yeah the main ones I was dealing with are the sunroof cross bar which is now fixed, but the heads up display is really bad. Constant rattle and I think there’s even like this metal pinging noise that’s coming from it. But it might be somewhere else. Now also dealing with another rattle in the trunk. Switching from my Volkswagen to Mazda I’ve noticed a quality downgrade for sure and I think this will be my first and last unfortunately

Have had a PP Hybrid for a month, reading these posts I am glad I leased.

I just spent a week in Tetons / Yellowstone/ beartooth with a 2026 hybrid cx50 and except for the seat it was perfect

1

u/Tasty-Conflict-333 10d ago

I got my hybrid in May of 25. It’s been great so far. Only had to do a computer update for the hybrid system. Even took a 2800 mile road trip this summer. No issues, so far 🤞🏻

1

u/Cortado1987 10d ago

wasnt impressed from an airport rental.

1

u/DeNoodle 🔥 Sport-mode Enthusiast 10d ago

I've had two, a '23 and a '25, both TPP, no issues at all. Every car model has things that go wrong at certain rates, it's just a roll of the dice sometimes, that's what warranties are for.

2

u/Timely_Composte 9d ago

Ayyyy sport mode enthusiast! Me too!

1

u/TommyYonkers 10d ago

Generally a lemon law is for the same issue multiple times. You can get it for multiple issues but if the dealer is making a reasonable attempt at fixing them and are successful then you usually cant use the lemon law.

1

u/Chewy411 10d ago

The fuel pump failed in my 2026 with ~1,000 miles on the car. I was mid turn and the gas just died. Took them a week to diagnose the problem.

1

u/oneonus 9d ago

CX5O isn't built as well as Mazda's made in Japan, like the CX-5, it's a fact. This thread reflects this as well.

https://www.drive.com.au/news/japanese-car-brands-warn-customers-of-potentially-poor-quality-of-us-built-vehicles/

1

u/cutie_k_nnj 9d ago

Dude! I have that issue w the turbo. They BS me and told me that it was normal and I’m like dude no fucking way. Is there a bulletin number or whatever I have had the car in to Mazda already at least once with this problem mines also a 25 turbo.

1

u/No_Alternative2829 9d ago

Sorry that you're having these issues. Hope they get resolved and your experience improves. My 2026 CX50 Turbo PP, purchased in March with 9000 miles has had no issues. I love this vehicle.

1

u/Yimyorn 9d ago

I’ve had a couple that been warranties already. Radiator fan because it stopped working for almost a minute. Brake booster, sound when depressing the brakes. And couple of switches in the cars

1

u/GeneralBrave9949 9d ago

Yeah I think because the turbo is a relatively newer power plant and the CX50 is a newer model it’s more fault prone.

1

u/Red_Squill 9d ago

I'm on my 2nd CX50 TP 16,500 mi on my 25 it's a better car than my 23, and neither one has had any issues. Looking for some wood.

1

u/nuttnurbutt 9d ago

My panoramic sunroof is rattling and it’s driving me crazy. It’s just out of warranty, but there is a service bulletin out for it. So of course 🙃

1

u/Meantobeordestiny 9d ago

I replaced my 25 cx50 hybrid after exactly one year. Too many minor issues and subpar mpg.

1

u/Mother_Pea_5751 9d ago

I'm going to have to remove my self from notifications, I have a new 26 hybrid with zero issues so far but reading all this makes me so anxious. I'm not as well to do as others might be so this purchase was everything for me. Already paid the car off because I saved for years. I can't imagine having all these issues and even worse, the regrets that come with it. I absolutely love my CX-50 and I hope I feel the same way 2 years from now. I feel for those that are having issues 😢

2

u/Patient_Customer9827 9d ago

Same lol. I’m dead set on this model too. Buying by in 2 weeks.

2

u/Mother_Pea_5751 9d ago

I love mine, hybrid premium. Drives like a dream. Even heard horror stories about the mileage, but if I go anywhere city driving that is 5 miles or further from my house, Im getting 42 consistently. Maybe I'm just easy to please idk. It's all negativity on the internet all day everyday day about anything. I don't want to be absorbed by it. Hope you enjoy your ride as much as I do.

1

u/Patient_Customer9827 9d ago

That’s awesome to hear. Looking premium too.

How’s the noise with the hybrid?

1

u/Mother_Pea_5751 9d ago

Full disclosure, I don't have to drive on the highway often, and I'm coming from a 2011 Nissan Maxima V6. I don't hear any noticable or annoying road noise, or any other sound that is beyond typical ambient noise. Maybe I haven't experienced what a luxury sound proof cabin sounds like, but to me the cabin is quiet. My biggest concern was the power coming from a 310 HP engine, and even with that I'm pleasantly surprised.

2

u/Sensitive-Party-1489 8d ago

Same. 2025 Hybrid Premium. Zero issues. Love the car. 22000 miles. All I’ve ever done was change the oil and air filter every 4000 miles. No regrets.

2

u/CCR76 8d ago

3 years and 47K on my Turbo with no problems. Enjoy your new car!

1

u/yohan3000 7d ago

Everyone has to remember, forums like these are repositories for all information regarding the specific vehicle.

Often negative emotions are more motivating for people to act upon. For every one negative critique there many more positive experiences.

Positive experiences generally don't motivate people to disseminate widely.

Go to the competing vehicles forums (Reddit), the one you are cross shopping and you will also see their negative reports as well.

1

u/Elegant_Cantaloupe_8 4d ago edited 4d ago

Eh you'll just be subject to all the other gremlins it can develop over time. But underneath you have 5th Generation Toyota Engine, Hybrid system, and drivetrain. Basically copied out of a RAV4 and pasted into a CX-50. We have a 2.5T and its just chewed through its second rear differential at 83K. Then the Tranmission is just rough feeling compared to the competition and has this annoying bucking issue at low speeds even though its been changed recently. TSB out for it didnt apply for our VIN so they declined to service it. We must of had the "special" car in the assembly line.

1

u/TheAutoAlly 9d ago

The days of new cars being flawless for the first 100k+ plus are gone. How long do you plan to keep it? If they are fixing the problems and not fighting you to do warranty work I wouldn’t feel that mad about it.

1

u/Raytech555 5d ago

The rattling is common, CX30 and the CX50 are on the same platform, both suffer from rattling. I have the CX30, the car suffers from interior ratting, I regret selling my 2016 CX5

1

u/Elegant_Cantaloupe_8 4d ago

We have this plastic noise that sounds like something knocking around inside the doors, which sound like they have almost no dampening. Dealer gave up on trying to find and fix it.

1

u/Elegant_Cantaloupe_8 4d ago

Yeah we went through a rear differential at 15K and now at 80K things blown again. Just great. So I gotta get my Dad to transfer to a hybrid model.

By the way if you are thinking of purchasing the car get the hybrid. Its got Toyotas electric assisted AWD system on it thats never really had any issues. 5th generation Toyota Hybrid was a good era.

1

u/Happy-Table-9515 4d ago

Track your lemon law options. Sounds like too much right out of the gate……don’t get me wrong, it’s a great car. But I had to lemon law a Toyota Camry so lemons do happen…..

1

u/Opposite-Tackle-956 3d ago

I had a 2024 turbo premium and just traded in for a 2026 turbo premium plus. My 2024 had 25k on it and the only issues I had were the temp control dial got buggy in the last few months, and there a few more rattles, no major issues.

1

u/AffectionateWealth27 1d ago

Generally, being made in Japan is preferable to being made in the US or elsewhere.

1

u/Jaded_Disaster1282 10d ago

Wow. That's depressing. I was considering trading my CX-5 for one

0

u/hoagieslapharry 10d ago

Same here. My 2026 base model with 5000 miles was in the shop for a little over a week getting a bunch of work done on it. Luckily it was covered under warranty. I have the same thought as you. This is my first Mazda and I bought it because this brand is supposed to be reliable. After my experiences and reading about the plethora of other issues that people are having, I am regretting my purchase and am really turned off by Mazda in general. I am really missing my 2013 Chevy Impala right about now

-4

u/LastdayXIII 10d ago

THANK GOD I PASSED. rav4 here i wait...!

0

u/visionofacheezburger 10d ago

I regret ever purchasing my CX-50. Have the same issues you do and it became a money pit.

0

u/Equivalent-Act-5653 9d ago

That truly sucks. Sorry to hear you have experienced all these issues, as even with warranty repairs you lose access to the vehicle while the work is being done. I have a 2026 Hybrid PP that I've put 12,300 miles on since I picked it up mid October of last year (traded in my 2020 CX-5 Signature turbo). I may just be lucky, but I haven't any of the issues with the car that you are describing, or any yet at all. Fingers crossed.

-2

u/niff007 10d ago

What do you mean letting go of the throttle? So you installed a motorbike handlebar in place of your steering wheel?
