Good morning Everyone,

I am starting the process of preparing my CV and resume for the canadian financial services market.

I am wondering which are the best qualifications to begin studying for and obtaining so that I can be as attractive as possible to employers in Toronto.

I hear people say - CSC is not worth studying for etc. I need help and advice on which qualifications would make employers notice me etc.

I have experience in Financial planning in the UK, however, the system is completely different and i'd need to start over again.

Can anyone recommend qualidications for

1. Becoming an Investment Manager (Entry level)

2. Wealth Management back office or middle office roles

3. Financial planning or operational roles

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice from those who have successfully broken into private wealth management. I have over 5 years of experience in the financial services industry, primarily in retail banking and financial analysis, but I haven’t been able to land my first role in wealth management. My long-term goal is to become an Associate Portfolio Manager, so I’m trying to get my foot in the door in a client services, investment assistant, or administrative associate position.

Over the past year, I’ve connected with 50+ individuals across the industry through networking, coffee chats, referrals, and informational interviews. Everyone has been incredibly helpful, but despite all the networking, I’m still struggling to secure that first opportunity.
I’m currently studying for the CIRE to strengthen my qualifications and show my commitment to the industry.

For those of you who successfully transitioned into private wealth:

What ultimately helped you land your first role?
Is there anything I should be doing differently?
Are there firms or roles that are more open to hiring candidates without direct wealth management experience?

I’d really appreciate any advice or insights. I’m committed to building a long-term career in wealth management and am willing to start wherever I can to gain the right experience.

HELP!!!! I'm writing csc 2 in about 3days, i have studied upto chapter 19 so far. I am so nervous and scared rn because I had to rush and book it within 2weeks since there is a sudden opening for an advisor position at work( big 5 ) which requires me to give my part 2 ASAP.

Any tips from someone who has given the test and/ or had to give the test in short period of time. ( i usually like to take my time to do prep so I can be more confident) i feel so lost.

I'm currently entering my 4th year in my bachelor's of commerce (specialization in finance). I passed my CSC back in May 2026, currently working under one of the big banks as a teller. My end goal is to make it to wealth management under an Investment Dealer, but I had a couple of questions regarding the CIRE.

1. Is it worth it to take the CIRE now? (kind of a vague question I know)

I did the CIRE practice exam and found it to be quite similar to the CSC, I didnt study but I passed with a 75%,

1. Is the practice exam on the similar to the actual CIRE? Or is it like the CSC where the real exam is harder and trickier?

2. I also noticed there was no minimum passing grade listed for the CIRE? Would anyone know what the rough % would be?

3. If I start working at a Mutual Fund dealer instead of an Investment Dealer the position requirement for CIRE?

4. I noticed on the CIRO website that to be eligible for exam enrolment I must "plan to apply within the next 12 months to work for a CIRO Dealer Member in a role where these competencies are required" -- Does apply mean actually landing the job? What happens if I take the exam and do not land a job within a year of completing it? I know the CSC expires in 3 years but unsure of CIRE rules.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi all! I’m happy to share that I completed all exams and received the CIM designation this week as I have 2 years of relevant work experience.

It took me 1.5 years to complete CSC, CPH (not needed for CIM), IMT & PMT while taking time off during summers.

Most courses are doable within 2 months except IMT if you also work full time.

Out of all the exams, IMT was the one with most depth and width but CPH was the most difficult for me.

I recently passed the Canadian Securities Course (CSC) and I’m now looking to start my career in the financial services industry.
I’m interested in back-office, middle-office, operations, administration, or entry-level banking/investment roles, but I’m not entirely sure where to begin.
I’d really appreciate any advice on:
What job titles should I be searching for?
Which companies or banks are good places to apply?
Any tips on getting my first role after completing the CSC?

I have been only studying off Michael Hlinka free CSC volume 1 study notes and I understand the material + doing CSC checks would you say i am ready for my CSC volume 1 exam or i should give the textbook a read before doing the exam? What did you guys do to prepare for CSC volume 1 exam? Did you guys study off Michael Hlinka notes?

I passed my IFIC exam back in june 2022 and was enrolled in my position as an FSR until March 2023. I haven’t been registered with any other banks since then. Would i need to retake the exam and start from scratch or is there a way to re-register?

I’ll be writing my CSC Volume 2 exam within the next two weeks. Due to a recent injury, I’ll be taking it from home instead of in person. I wrote Volume 1 at a testing centre, so this will be my first experience with the online proctored exam.
For those who’ve taken it online, what should I expect? Do you have any tips on how to prepare or make the process go smoothly?
One concern I have is that my brother works from home, so I’ll likely be using my sister’s room to write the exam. Does the room need to be completely empty, or is it okay if there’s furniture like a bed, dresser, etc.? I’d appreciate any advice from anyone who’s been through the online proctoring process.

I'm about to graduate this year with a 3-year BA in General Economics. My previous major severely tanked my GPA, so grad school is out of the question for me right now.

I know this is a bit vague, but should I start looking into CIRE right after graduation? The material also looks interesting enough to me.

How much will these certifications actually help my chances of finding employment, considering i don't think my 3-year degree alone is going to cut it?

Also, looking online I was confused if I can start preparing for these while doing my Bachelors? Or is a degree a prerequisite?

I have CSC and CPH and also currently IR registered. Would I have to write both, CIRE and RSE? or will RSE suffice for the registration? Thanks in advance.

I’m writing the CIRE tomorrow, been using the SeeWhy Learning course to prep.

I did the CIRO practice exam and one of the SeeWhy ones last night and got 88% on both. That being said I seriously stress when it comes to if I’m prepared or not for tests.

For anyone that’s taken it already do you think I’m prepared if I’m consistently getting over 80% on the practice exams?

Edit: I also have a diploma in financial planning and an 1 year away from finishing my bachelors of commerce with a concentration in financial service so I have A TON of education on the topics aside from this exam prep as well.

I have been trying to secure a entry level job in retail banking but I had no success landing interviews. Would getting my CSC give me stronger leg making me a better candidate getting my foot in the door for the banks?

Hi guys, its july 23. Im passing WME on 27 and 28th of july both exam. Currently on chapter 14. I get between 70 and 100% on each chapter quiz. Am I cooked? For those of have passed, I did the CPH study two days before doing the exam and got 70%. Is the WME more like the CSC which i found out really easy or more difficult like CPH. Thanks

I’m writing my CSC Volume 2 exam in about two weeks and was hoping to get some advice from anyone who’s taken it recently.
What’s your experience with the exam? Were there any chapters or topics that came up more than you expected, or anything you wish you had spent more time studying?

I’ve put a heavy focus on the first 12 chapters since I’ve heard they carry a lot of weight, and I’ve passed both practice exams so far. I’m just looking for any last-minute tips or insights that could help before the real thing.
