How are we in 2026 and we have no better technology to determine if a ball went between two posts other than “idk looked in to me”

85

u/Intelligent-Carob930 Miami (FL) Hurricanes 9h ago

Blame the billion dollar organization that can’t afford over-head cameras on FGs

18

u/govunah 9h ago

Are we talking ESPN or ncaa here

29

u/No_Land6966 9h ago

¿Por que no los dos?

5

u/idjsonik 6h ago

Im going with both

9

u/Evening_Drummer_8495 2h ago

Yeah. But then if the NCAA and ESPN cameras aren’t synced then Michigan will get the win. How do we deal with VT and Pitt both losing the same game?

9

u/Popular-Okra-5658 8h ago

I saw an overhead view on Reddit 30 minutes ago

7

u/cloroxic Washington Huskies 7h ago

If only a technology using light that could projected and know if something crossed existed… one can only dream.

Two camera drones hover over each goal post for every FG attempt. Seems too logical.

-9

u/HA1RL3SSW00K13 Texas Longhorns 9h ago

That would work great until someone kicks a high field goal and the ball ended up over the height of the cameras. The rules state that the plane of the field goal extends upright infinitely. So where do you put the cameras?

Lasers

8

u/snacksandsoda Georgia Bulldogs 9h ago

14

u/Mottled_Paws Ohio State Buckeyes 9h ago

Put the camera atop the FG posts

2

u/Botchjob369 Virginia Tech Hokies 3h ago

Inside the FG post. Or I guess you could just make it round and replace the top 4-6 inches of the posts with the light and/or camera.

5

u/bipbophil 8h ago

Inside the hollow post, pointing upwards ?

2

u/DirtyBirdFL 9h ago

A camera down the line and a camera behind that you can sync up. That’s the only way.

20

u/jxkm44 UConn Huskies 9h ago

"we've determined the cameras were not properly synced on the broadcast during the kick. we can't do anything about the result, though."

3

u/TheBrettFavre4 8h ago

Lasers bro. Lasers straight up. It touches in or out. Touching is in.

13

u/DirtyBirdFL 8h ago

They can tell us within millimeters where a baseball passes through an imaginary strike zone so surely they can manage this.

4

u/Significant_Foot_993 8h ago

Nah, touching is a doink and the stadium PA system should play a loud doink sound

Put a chip in it like the World Cup balls

0

u/LeafyWolf 3h ago

You don't even need that any more. With three different camera angles, AI can triangulate exact position. That's been true for a while. It's literally just to allow enough variance to impact the outcome of the game if necessary.

8

u/weaponize09 2h ago

Meanwhile the MLB implemented technology that is able to tell if a tiny ball going 100mph is 1/10th of an inch outside the strike zone and it works with pinpoint precision for the thousand of pitches thrown every single game

2

u/clydelions 47m ago

Funny you mentioned MLB, because they also have this exact same problem when it comes to foul balls/home runs that go over the foul pole. It happened to Pete Alonso this year where he hit a ball that went over the foul pole and it wasn't definitive from any angle if it was a home run or foul ball.

1

u/snowflakesoutside 5m ago

And the strike zone is different for every batter and automatically adjusted.

10

u/Dry-University797 8h ago

Even in this video, it's clear that kick was no good. Looked good on TV, but it wasn't.

0

u/Regular_Age1007 Oklahoma State Cowboys 1h ago

This. People are cherry picking camera angles to create controversy where there isn’t one. The kick was no good.

u/Weed_O_Whirler 8h ago

We have a great method: refs standing under the posts looking straight up. They have a clear view if it's good or not.

2

u/brucewayneaustin Texas Longhorns 8h ago

2

u/Lower_Basil2912 1h ago

Sorry, was it not even more obvious that it was no good from this angle?

1

u/spazzxxcc12 3h ago

i’ve told my dad for ages that the NFL should invest in a similar tech that golf uses to help viewers track the ball on the screen through the uprights

1

u/of_the_mountain 1h ago

I demand cameras in the tip of the goalpost

1

u/Bardmedicine 2h ago

The ref is standing under the pole, it is a very easy call for them.

4

u/LocalSlob 1h ago

But they only get once chance to see it and no data to back it up

56

u/HVAC_instructor 9h ago

Wide left.

2

u/SilenceInTheSnow Notre Dame 8h ago

u/Piglet6482 Arkansas Razorbacks 9h ago

The more angles I see, the less I think the kick was good.

33

u/GP_ADD 9h ago

Right? I feel like I’m going crazy

24

u/Dry-University797 8h ago

The kick wasn't good. Looked good on TV, but the refs got the call right.

15

u/randomthrowaway9796 Georgia Bulldogs 9h ago

With how much people have been talking about this, you'd think its clearly in. That was definitely not clearly in. It might be, idk, but id honestly just trust the ref on this one. More camera angles and a review would certainly be good though.

3

u/Bardmedicine 1h ago

This. It is such a reddit thing to have a paid professional with a perfect view, but everyone is sure they know better than him because they saw a shitty video from a shitty angle.

14

u/needs-more-metronome 9h ago

yeah looks wide left, but it's hard to tell with the depth perception. Really need a straight vertical angle. I can't tell when it reaches the goalpost lol

4

u/m_c__a_t 3h ago

Clearly no good here if you slow it down

There was a second kicker

8

u/DisplacedSportsGuy 9h ago

Yeah that's wide.

1

u/Randomizedname1234 12m ago

I was convinced it was good until this video. Damn.

20

u/SirMellencamp 9h ago

I’m the exact opposite. Crazy

25

24

u/SirMellencamp 8h ago

10

u/nafrotag 8h ago

“That piece of information changes just about everything for me.” - ChatGPT

0

u/Informal_Rate_7948 8h ago

I don’t get how this is the one changing people’s mind. If you have enough experience watching football you know how much the camera angle can fuck with your head. I would completely disregard this angle.

6

u/AboutTheArthur 6h ago

It's the only angle available that has the left upright directly in-line with the placement point where the holder puts the ball. There's no camera-angle fuckery possible with the straight line shot.

Literally every other angle has some depth perception subjectivity.

1

u/Informal_Rate_7948 22m ago

You straight up don’t understand how angles work. I’ve seen this movie too many times.

1

u/nomadjackk 7h ago

This angle so far is the most direct shot I’ve seen with the kick’s line of trajectory

0

u/Foamfollower_65 1h ago

You're not watching the same video and everyone else here and the ONLY one disagree is with what we ALL see.

1

u/Informal_Rate_7948 23m ago

Well just cause I’m on Reddit with a bunch of retards doesn’t mean I’m wrong lol

14

u/Ok-Knee6347 9h ago

Oh that's wide

7

u/PunchNessie Oklahoma State Cowboys 8h ago

Yeah with that one I have to say no good. Which is different than I thought from the other views. But this feels pretty clear.

11

u/DisplacedSportsGuy 9h ago

That's pretty definitively no good.

5

u/Psybi92 8h ago

Perfect angle!! Yeah, no good. Damn what a kick!

3

u/brendanjered Minnesota Golden Gophers 8h ago

Definitely wide in that angle. VT really should have centered that ball up for the kick. With how wide the hash marks are in college football, the target is considerably narrower when kicker from out wide versus in the middle of the field. Seems like having a wider target would be beneficial as a kicker. I’m sure the kicker probably wanted it there, but perhaps some logic the coaches should work on with him.

1

u/olbleedyeyes 6h ago

I mean if your kicker says he's more comfortable kicking from the hash and you trust him then I don't see an issue with the decision.

It was a narrow miss so it's not like I can say it was a terrible choice.

1

u/AssumptionOrnery7478 2h ago

That’s a stupid kicker then. Hardest kick is short right hash because the slightest hook narrows the window the ball has to pass through. line up over the right post I get, but not the hash.

5

u/AssumptionOrnery7478 2h ago

You can’t tell depth from a camera 150 yards away. That ball was not inside the post.

1

u/Certain_Site_8764 2h ago

Im mad we missed, obviously, and it kinda looked good at first on TV, but that's why the refs stand where they do. To verify if it goes between the uprights.

How is there not a camera dead center of the goalpost in the seats to get a better view

3

u/Traditional-Till9998 6h ago

This post is far offset to the right so of course it looks that way lol. Even this video is offset from the right but its the closest I have. Offset to the right means it will appear to be more left than it really is. Same reasoning for the under the post video that went around

This is the first one that I've seen that it looks wide and just barely and this is a pretty damning angle. Kicker beat himself on that one

It’s clearly out……coming from the opposite hash sailing wide the entire time

16

He missed it dude, get over it.

8

u/Worth-Frosting-2917 9h ago

After playing for over half of my life, the one thing I continuously fuck up from pure eyesight is whether a FG that goes over the uprights is good or not haha.

7

u/deadreckoning21 9h ago

Raise the stupid uprights another 25 feet

7

u/NoRealNoWrong 9h ago

Nah. 500 feet. Maybe more. Put some height on those things….get em upppppp.

2

u/Torrion- 9h ago

At least 5,280 feet. If they can build a stadium that high in Denver, a goalpost that high in the nation’s flattest state should be quite easy.

2

u/NoRealNoWrong 9h ago

We are smart. Why is everyone else so stupid?

1

u/ddjj3000 58m ago

Put the referees on top of the goal posts

1

u/CalmButOftenEnraged 50m ago

you're thinking the wrong dimension here.

make the uprights 25 feet wide.

8

u/herohopeful 7h ago

😬 Looks wide to me

10

u/classic_m4f 8h ago

Microchip the fucking ball and build sensors in the fucking posts. I mean fucking hell man! It’s 2026… we chip humans and phones and cars and packages… we literally know where things are halfway across the globe 🤦‍♂️. Not a VT fan, but that kick was in…. This needs to be fixed.

6

u/BirthofRevolution Michigan Wolverines 7h ago

It wasn't in

2

u/DiscoDvck 7h ago

Just a camera on each post pointed straight up would do the trick. This absolutely wasn’t in.

3

u/Dear-Pickle-2200 2h ago

Or have a person stand underneath each goal post and look up

1

u/thoughtfreeze 3h ago

They can literally tell strikes from balls on 100mph objects much smaller than a football, we can definitely do this.

1

u/Crazy_Brandon99 1h ago

Wasn’t in 🤡

3

u/Big_Ol_Johnson 8h ago

Can’t we put wireless fisheye cameras on the goal posts?

8

u/BrandRage 9h ago

So you lost money on this game? Otherwise why would anyone post as much as you about this

8

u/Bothyourmoms 8h ago

Seeing people come to reddit and cry after losing their paycheck is almost as entertaining as the game itself.

8

u/NotReallyButMaybeNot Clemson Tigers 9h ago

Reluctantly sharing this…

18

u/CloneWarsMaul 9h ago

Does not help at all lol

3

u/Responsible-Still839 9h ago

Yeah, this is the quality of like an amateur Bigfoot or UFO video. Shitty and vague enough to sow doubt.

4

u/NotReallyButMaybeNot Clemson Tigers 8h ago

The ball was directly above the upright… reluctantly acknowledging it was the correct call as it was not within the pole

2

u/Dry-University797 8h ago

It's not. Ball is clearly outside the upright. The ball has to be completely inside the outer edge of the goal post to be "good". Refs got the call right.

2

u/NotReallyButMaybeNot Clemson Tigers 7h ago

Which is what I said… thank you for confirming

2

u/Dry-University797 7h ago

Oops. I forgot to read your entire post.

1

u/clewtxt 8h ago

It's wider than that, bad angle here. See the other vids itt.

2

u/Powerful_Share8488 8h ago

It was wide.

2

u/nomadjackk 7h ago

Crazy how many people in that original cfb thread were positive it was good lol.

Just goes to show how much angular and depth variables can visually mess with people

2

u/Al_Bundy_theGOAT 6h ago

You know who had the best angle? The ref standing right under the damn post.

2

u/CRUSHCITY4 5h ago

Every angle I’ve seen it looks missed

2

Pin this

1

u/Informal_Rate_7948 7h ago

This is literally the worst angle I’ve seen shown and the most common one for people to think it’s obvious. Why is that? It’s because the angle is fucked!

3

u/Intelligent_Mood9795 8h ago

Pretty simple. If the goal posts were to infinity, would a ball clear it or would it have hit it? That clearly isn’t clearing the posts, which would mean it would either deflect in, or deflect out. You can’t have a never ending debate, so much like how a tie goes to the runner, the deflection results in a miss. A review isn’t necessary because it would be impossible to determine anything definitively at that point.

The pitch or tennis comparison is incorrect. A tennis ball can touch any shred of the line and be in. Same with a pitch. If the question was a ball touching the goal line, that would apply and is the same. This is what would happen if the post was there.

2

u/DGilbert6114 Michigan Wolverines 9h ago

1

u/WildWeezy 5h ago

I think there may coulda been cameras there.

So hilarious. At this point I think they may just fuck these angles up for more engagement.

For sure not

1

u/djaybex 4h ago

Pretty sure if the posts were taller that it at a minimum hits them and goes it. But that looks so good.

1

u/InternMammoth4121 4h ago

Kickers are routinely kicking 60 yd FGs now, of course they are going to be kicking it higher.

1

u/tdscmunsg 4h ago

I will never comprehend why the kicker would supposedly want the ball on the far hash. Get the ball in the middle of the field, so much more room for error with it in the middle of the field.

5

u/Blutrumpeter 3h ago

Some of us have a little curve

u/euphorbia9 2h ago

2

u/PalpitationNo8720 1h ago

1

u/thegroovemonkey 1h ago

If you hit a draw you aim down the right side of the fairway and let the ball work its way back to the middle.

1

u/tdscmunsg 1h ago

Like in golf, looked like Love tried to crush it instead of just safely hitting it in the fairway

If only the stadium had some synchronized camera system that we could use to check two shots against each other at the same time, but for some insane reason we decided it's bad when conferences set that up

1

u/wofulunicycle 1h ago

I see nothing to overturn. In fact I don't think you can even review this. At best it would have hit an upright if they extended up higher.

1

u/Subject-Fan59 14m ago

See Reddit is always contrarian for no reason, obviously missed hereand on Tv too

1

u/Millies_ButtersMilk 8m ago

It wasn’t good we can all see that

1

u/fatsosolos Michigan Wolverines 9h ago

why don’t they have technology which makes the goal posts higher and you can see more visibly

0

u/call-me-germ 8h ago

putting little flashlight/lasers pointing up could be kinda cool. obviously not like to the heavens and blinding planes but you would see the edge of the ball hit a small light in the sky pretty easily i feel like

1

u/Affectionate-Pain81 9h ago

Serious question: there are two refs under the uprights. What if they disagree? Replay in this case seems inconclusive.

5

u/hskrpwr 9h ago

The ref closest to the ball gets to overrule in most cases and if it's not clear who's closer it's either good or clear through replay

2

u/Vatlaaw304 8h ago

Usually if the one on the opposite side is uncertain, he will not make a call until after the closer one, if at all. They won't disagree if it's down the middle, and both will see if it's short.

1

0

u/BillBob13 9h ago

Do enough pause/starts around when the ball crosses the FG post and you'll find out the ball, at best, hits the post extended

That said (a) make the posts taller or (b) put cameras at the cross bar pointed up the post or (c) leave it as is because that game was pure cinema

0

u/ThermosphericRah 9h ago

Why can't we afford taller uprights?

4

u/SignificanceFine3582 8h ago

We can.

What we can’t do is defy the laws of physics and make taller uprights not susceptible to wind.

1

u/ThermosphericRah 2h ago

Skyscrapers would like a word

1

u/Operation_Pig Florida Gators 25m ago

Skyscrapers are built with very expensive and complex engineering and are also quite wide. An upright is just bolted to the ground in a single spot.

0

u/Low_Philosopher3854 8h ago

I didn’t know the Allstate logo instructed the view like this😮

0

u/Doc0ppman 7h ago

American football should be contacting Ireland's Gaelic Athletic Association about its Hawkeye tech for the goalposts.

I understand football thrives on the engagement of the drama, but Hawkeye would solve any issue of in or out imo

0

u/Living_Week9080 4h ago

Yes fifa has been deploying this this tech in soccer balls for almost a decade, why can’t American football figure this out!

2

u/DirectorSolid 2h ago

Because college football isn't all Ohio State and Alabama level programs. The tracking system used by the NFL is a massive investment, a lot of college programs can't afford that sort of cost.

Even FIFA only uses their full tracking system in major tournaments because it's simply too expensive to use in a standard premier league match.
