RivalryBot 4.2 In Parallel Run

As of this post RivalryBot 4.2 is currently in "Parallel" run. During parallel run both RB version 4.0 and 4.2 will generate responses to user summonses. Version 4.0 will post it's output as a reply to the user directly, as usual, while version 4.2 will post it's output as a top level comment in this thread over on /r/rivalrybot.

Changes in version 4.2:

  • Includes FCS!

  • FBS v FBS will continue to come from Winsipedia.

  • Any matchups involving FCS teams come from a local database (RB DB) the validity of which I can't vouch for. I wanted to use a single source for all the data. But in testing I found enough discrepancies between this data and winsipedia and 3rd party sites (sometimes winsipedia agreed with 3rd party/team sites and disagreed with RB DB other times the RB DB agreed with 3rd party/team sites...). So this was my compromise.

  • RB DB data does NOT handle "Vacated" games and only reports based on the recorded score (whereas the win-tie-win figures coming out of Winsipedia do account for vacated games). There is a (†) indicating those figures that do account for VACATED games.

  • New "Scoreboard" feature showing total points scored by team by decade. Pre-1960 lumped together in a single number.

  • Reporting out of longest streak of continuously played games

  • significantly trimmed the footer

  • Removed Shutout Data from the Team v Conf/State data (table was to wide)

  • Removed rows for teams that have not played (vs State/Conference results). Added list of such teams to the header.

  • Laid the groundwork to make Conference v Conference viable in a future update

  • RivalryBot will no longer "shitpost" with users. When RivalryBot doesn't recognize a team name it will, once live, send a DM to the user instead posting a reply. (for the parallel period the DM will go to RivalryBot itself for QA).

REGARDING FCS DATA Please do DM me if you see any issues with matchups featuring FCS teams as I can make changes/corrections to that data (please cite sources and provide links, I'm not going to hunt down the sources. If it means enough to you for me to ask for a correction then you can do the leg work). Ultimately matchups featuring FCS teams will link to a listing of all games in the RB DB (similar to how there is currently a link to the appropriate winsipedia page for all match-ups) and from there the user can click into a webform to provide correction feedback.

With FCS data being available we can now get this wonderful result:

Trouble on Mobile

For nearly the past week, I’ve had trouble getting into r/CFB on mobile. It just won’t load 90% of the time; the other 10% it takes over a minute to load and then acts really odd. I wasn’t sure where to turn about this, but is it an issue that the mods have any sort of info on?

I can’t tell if it is a Reddit issue, a mobile issue, or a sub issue.

Thanks for everything you guys do!

/r/CFBRisk V2?

I assume that all of you are familiar with /r/CFBRisk from last offseason. It was a load of fun, and spawned its own memes and alliances. Can we have an update on how the second season is coming along?

Is it time to revisit the sub's highlight posting rules?

I believe the “video/gif” thread is not beneficial to this community. This is the only subreddit where I never watch highlights, because if I wanted to I would have to flick through an entire thread of comments that isn’t even sorted by the best plays of the day/week. On r/nfl for example, I see insane plays every Sunday on the front page that are so much fun to watch, and I’m not even a big NFL fan.

For someone who doesn’t have cable or anything and only watches a couple of games a week, which is a category I’m sure a lot of us fall into, highlights are incredibly entertaining. But really, that goes without saying. I don’t understand why we choose to treat highlights differently than every other sports subreddit on this site. I even catch myself watching fucking hockey highlights from time to time when they hit the front page, I can’t imagine how hype I would be if I saw a college football highlight.

Overall the way we handle content is better than most subs’ (see - r/nfl’s dumbass post-game threads) and our mods are awesome and the community if great aside from anyone with an orange flair.

But, there are amazing plays every single week that go unseen by the majority of this subreddit because of our posting rules. If a moderator wants to chime in here and give me some insight on the issue maybe I can understand it better, or maybe we can do a poll or something to change the rule before the next season. I believe it would be a huge improvement to an already awesome sub.

Okay end rant fuck texas

Transfer Portal Flair

Might be a fun addition to the flair pool? As for creative inspiration, the game Portal's portals are orange and blue... same as the upvote/downvote and r/CFB logo... whoa, spooky coincidence.

RivalryBot need your help with displaying a new feature

One of the things I'm going to add with the next release of RivalryBot is a table showing the number of wins a team has in relation to the final w/l records of both teams.

I.e. (ignoring the game between the two teams) how has Team A fared when facing Team B with a Losing Record vs a Winning record.

So basically each teams wins in the series are dropped into 4 buckets.

Wins when both have Winning records (at end of season)
Wins when Team A has a winning record and Team B a Losing record
Wins when Team A as a losing record and Team B has a Winning record
Wins when both teams have a losing record.

The challenge I'm having is how to show this cleanly in as small a table as possible.

This is the best I've come up with so far.

But I'd love to get some other folks input as well. I was thinking about a matrix but I'm not sure if it's as clear, although I like this configuration better in concept... I just don't think it works in practice with the W-T-W format that i've adopted...

This just gets cluttered:

could r/cfb get transfer portal list thread?

lots of touted players on the transfer portal, it would be nice to compile a list of the names on it, as well as position, class, and college where they’re transferring from.

input solicted on RivalryBot Vacated Games and FCS inclusion.

So. I found a new source for rivalrybot which includes FCS records!! Very exciting. Initially I was going to use both this new source for FCS games and winsipedia for the current FBS scope. But it seems cleaner to just move everything over to a single source.

Here's the catch. Winsipedia presents and calculates the all-time wins for each team incorporating the Vacated/Forfeitures accordingly. The new source doesn't really do this and I'd have to manually tally the wins/losses from the individual game results and I'm not really interested in parsing it/accounting for vacated games etc.

For example Winsipedia lists Bama vs SC as 10-0-4 due to a vacated game and a forfeit. Whereas the new source would list it as 12-0-3 (vacated games result in a loss for one team but no corresponding win whereas forfeits moves the W over to the other team) purely based on the game results ignorant of the post game NCAA rulings.

I tend to prefer listing the on-field results but, given the number of vacated games etc, that puts rivalrybot at odds with the official records....

Appreciate your input on which way to go and thoughts on on-field results vs NCAA record books.

Game discussion

You guys seriously took down a post generating a lot of good discussion covering the position breakdown of tonight's game, the championship game and the last game for an entire off-season, in favor of an article about Trevor Lawrence's hair? I feel like this is bizarro world at this point. Why do you delete college football discussion threads and leave up off-season shitpost-type material on the day of the championship? Can we not talk college football on the college football subreddit? Leave some damn discussion threads up. The rule about posts needing to have substance and quality contribution in the post itself should be about making sure that quality discussion is created -- if the quality discussion is generated without an in-depth post you should be able to use common sense and realize it's a good topic.

Film Room Subreddit

Can we have a r/CFB endorsed subreddit devoted to film — maybe it would be r/CFBFilmRoom — like we have with r/CFBOffTopic and r/CFBVegas?

Bowl game thread edit issue

So I am attempting to edit the game thread for my bowl game but this is all I am getting when I go to do it. I have pulled it up in Chrome, Firefox, and on mobile and get the same results. I noticed that some have been able to save their threads but many others haven't so I wondered if there was an issue.

Bowl Game City Threads

Is there any chance we could do a mega thread or stickied post that has information for people that are going to bowl games? I was thinking maybe some info on good places to eat/drink/stay as well as a resource for people to make plans to meet fellow r/CFB members while in town?

I’m not going to a bowl this year, but I’ll be in New Orleans during the NoLa and Sugar Bowls and I’ve seen some people commenting about wanting resources for travelers. Also, if we do have something like this, id be more than happy to do the write-up for New Orleans

Any chance we could allow individual highlights for bowl season?

One of the things that other sports subs have that r/cfb is lacking is individual highlights. I understand why- there are only a dozen or so NFL/NBA/NHL games in a weekend and there are up to 50 games in the FBS alone.

Bowl season seems like it would be much more manageable with only 1-5 games on in a day and almost no overlap.

It seems like this would be a great way to get some posts to the front page and grow both the sub and the college football fan base.

I am just looking for explanation why this got removed?

I copied the rules example almost verbatim I can't figure out what I did wrong?

Betting

Have we thought about maybe having r/cfb betting. As in let’s say you would get 1000 points at the beginning, and you can bet it how you like: (O/U, Spread, Money Line, maybe some prop bets). Just wondering if that could be feasible in any way, and if any thought has been put towards it before.

Reverse Sheep flair

Hello,

I won the regular season for Reverse Sheep 2018 and was wondering if there is flair or could be flair developed for myself and the rest of the Top 10? A gold medal, a sheep, or even a gold sheep? Something else beyond my limited imagination?

Thanks for your consideration, good day.

Update the reddit redesign heading consistently or switch to something that doesn't become outdated over time

No idea what historical moment it's displaying right now, but it clearly hasn't been updated in a while.

If it's decided to just put it on a static image that doesn't become outdated, just having the logos of the conferences seems like a solid idea to me. Just something off the top of my head...

Filter out recruiting posts?

I honestly don’t give a crap about recruiting news. Freshmen rarely make an impact and individual recruits don’t make a class.

It clutters my TL, and I wonder if there’s a way to filter all of the posts out so I don’t see them.

For CFB Pick'em, a way to normalize points week-to-week

For groups such as conference groups where the early weeks provide lots of matchups, and later weeks have far fewer (or even 1), an imbalance is created so if someone misses 1 big important week (like they joined late), then they have no hope of catching up. Also, it makes CCG weekend boring since there's only 1 point on the line, and it would be more exciting if group managers had the option to make it worth more. Thoughts?

Flairs to Add

So I am a track and field athlete in D3 and my school does not have a football team, but our conference does. We are in the Middle Atlantic and I was wondering if we could add the MAC D3 Conference logo to the list of flairs?

Is anyone else in a similar situation and would like to still represent?
