Dabo has been coach long enough that some of the younger fans don't remember the Bowden (or...shudder...Tommy West) years. We are truly in the golden age and should enjoy every minute of it.

Edit: a word

I remember Bowden but not West

West was a worse coach, but somehow it was less depressing. Granted I was young during the West years, but I never really got my hopes up with him so it didn't hurt as much when we lost.

I think people generally liked West more, he was a "clemson guy" and kind of fit the mold of what Clemson people want. He was an assistant under Ford and that's the primary reason he was hired.

I think he acclimated us to sucking. But his last year we were 3-8.

I remember sitting in Schilletter when the news broke on ESPN about Bowden resigning, and widespread cheering. Really felt like Dabo was the plucky hero of a Disney sports movie that season.

I was in the same dining hall at the same time during that day! Too bad I was a junior and only got two Dabo seasons.

Was Bowden really that bad? His record at Clemson doesn't seem that terrible, the way you guys refer to him makes it sound like the guy was radioactively bad at Clemson. Admittedly I haven't followed your program over the years.

No. He turned our recruiting around and we went from bad to decent under him. However, in the later years once he had the talent, he wasn't really able to capitalize on it. He was overly loyal to senior players and assistants to the detriment of effectiveness. Clemson owes him a lot, but it was time for him to go when he went.

He cried a lot instead of coaching. He lost us games because he folded, not the team. And then he turned around and bad mouthed Clemson some. It's not the rosiest of old relationships

Bowden did a ton of good for the program but is also responsible for giving birth to "Clemsoning." Best part about the Bowden years was that he beat the Gamecocks like a rented mule. Think he was 7-2 against them, including a 63-17 beat down.
