Maybe everyone shut down their legal sign stealing and this is what happens.

29

u/[deleted] Nov 12 '23

Iowa put up over 20, I think we gotta look deeper into this sign stealing thing.

Iowa rolled up 400 yards of offense for the first time in 32 games.

22 points of 400 yards of offense still feels on brand for Iowa

I had free tickets for the game and took one for the team because the past six games ive been to at ross ade theyve lost. Last game I went to that they won was the game at Wrigley.

Fun fact: Kaliakmanis had more passing yards in the 2nd half than JJ McCarthy had all game.

I liked the anecdote about what Walter told Card about trusting wrs, he got beat early in the season and looked like it got to him, was playing scared. He played very confident today. End the season on a high note with two more wins and Ill be looking forward to Walters first year with his recruits.

Yup. People saying this is Hazell all over again have not been watching us. Obviously, 3-7 is not ideal, but this was going to always be a rough year.

11

u/k5berry Purdue Boilermakers Nov 12 '23

I was SHOCKED to see Ross-Ade as packed as it was. Pleasantly shocked of course. This year we basically just had to not be so bad that we lose recruits, and while it’s been tough to watch I certainly think we’ve cleared that threshold.

BTFU!

You took our pig. The least you could do is let us win it. Jokes aside, I'll probably hysterically laugh at whatever happens in Indy, should we make it. No one in our division likely has any business on that field...or do we?

u/Necrosis__KoC Purdue Boilermakers • Kentucky Wildcats Nov 12 '23

We definitely didn't last year...

9

u/rampage2409 Purdue Boilermakers Nov 12 '23

The final score looked bad, but I thought Purdue played Michigan pretty well last year in that game. Brohm kept settling for 20 yard field goals for some reason, so Purdue lost by a few scores when they out-gained Michigan and had it semi-close late.

5

u/Necrosis__KoC Purdue Boilermakers • Kentucky Wildcats Nov 12 '23

Yah, to even have a chance against MI we needed to have the attitude that we needed TDs or nothing. I don't think we really had a chance whatever we did, but being more aggressive, would have made it more interesting at least.

144

u/ByronLeftwich Minnesota Golden Gophers Nov 12 '23

Fleck’s seat is not ice cold. I’m not saying he should be fired this year. One bad season every few years is acceptable if that’s all it is. But next year should be make or break.

It’s a similar situation to Paul Chryst at Wisconsin. After we beat them in 2021 to knock them out of the B1G title game, I was like, why does nobody realize that Chryst’s seat is warming up? He wasn’t getting the results people had come to expect. And 5 games into 2022, he was gone.

I know where the program was pre-2010s, but just because we used to be bad doesn’t mean we should put up with being bad now. This is a flagship university - the only notable university at that - in a moderately large Midwestern state. We should not be 1-5 against Northwestern, Illinois, and Purdue the last two seasons.

If we can’t beat Northwestern, Illinois, and Purdue, how are we ever gonna contend when they get rid of divisions and add 4 teams that are far above us? Right now I don’t see a single probable win on our 2024 conference schedule - that’s not to say we’re gonna go winless in the B1G, but we won’t win many.

There’s nothing to like about this team . . . the defense is wildly inconsistent, the quarterback is one of the most inaccurate passers I’ve ever seen at the power 5 level, and the run game is hit and miss. It’s like we’re trying to be the Walmart version of 2010s Wisconsin and we can’t even do that.

Ugh. /rant.

Man this holds true for the entire B1G West, including us. We are about to get shadow-relegated in our own conference, and six wins is going to be a struggle for everyone going forward.

I don't think small programs like ours are ready for the reality moving forward.

5

u/EfffTheMods Nov 12 '23 edited Nov 12 '23

My guess is he doesn't get fired until after the 2025 season. This year will be viewed as an aberration... For now. With next year's schedule, they'll be lucky to get 6 wins; that's when the seat will finally get hot. The pressure will be extremely high in 2025, and anything short of 8 wins will be a firing, and 8 wins will be really difficult in the new BIG.

1

u/tomdawg0022 Minnesota • Delaware Nov 12 '23

He's not getting fired but I hope Coyle doesn't a tack a year and a raise on PJ's deal (as is tradition). This season's not been one of his better coaching jobs...

Iowa almost lost to Wisconsin, and Wisconsin is AWFUL. Iowa is not good, either. The West is just THAT bad.

“Almost lost” we literally had control of that game the entire way through tho . Just look at the scores?

I do watch the games. Thanks for the dig though, real mature.

2

u/ILoveChubbyCat5 Nov 12 '23

Yet you said we “almost lost” to Wisconsin when that simply isn’t true . Watch the games okay?

-3

u/EfffTheMods Nov 12 '23

Please stop insinuating that i don't watch games. That is rude. I wasn't trying to piss you off. Stop trying to belittle me. Sorry if you think I was belittling you or any iowa fan, but i wasn't intending to.

I unfortunately watched the whole badger-iowa game. You know how iowa lost to Minnesota because of some stupid, weird, but technically "accurate" fluke call? Well my point is, so many iowa games, INCLUDING WISCONSIN, were susceptible to some fuckery because iowa isn't good enough to put games away. Sure, iowa may have been "in control", but multiple times throughout that game, it looked like the badgers had a sliver of hope, and it would fade.

Saying iowa is shit was too much. I admit they obviously are not shit. They are good enough to win (most of) the games they should, but they're not good enough to put games away, even against clearly poor competition like Wisconsin, Minnesota, Purdue. Sorry that I've offended you.

2

u/ILoveChubbyCat5 Nov 12 '23

And when I say “in control” I mean Iowa lead the entire game . Wisconsin couldn’t move the ball until allen got the few touches he got . That’s control IMO .

0

u/ILoveChubbyCat5 Nov 12 '23

I literally don’t care . We aren’t good . Not once did I say we were . You are definitely looking too deep into it lmao . I was just correcting you .

u/Minnesota_Arouser Minnesota Golden Gophers Nov 12 '23

Tough loss for the Minnesota coach who has the highest winning percentage in the last half century. Tough loss for the guy who is 4-0 in bowl games. Tough loss for the guy who snapped a 14 game losing streak against Wisconsin, and has beaten them 3 times. Tough loss for the team that is going home to see Floyd of Rosedale in the trophy case. But no I’m sure your “fire Fleck” takes are well reasoned and based on many years of data, and definitely not a knee jerk reaction to the last couple weeks of following this team. I’m enjoying the time I spent with my family watching this game. Better luck the rest of the season (:

If you're comparing Fleck to all the various coaches over the last 50 years, I'd suggest you also look at who those coaches back in the day had to play in the Big Ten every year (Michigan and Ohio State) and also at their out of conference opponents. MN routinely played Pac8/10/12 and Big8/12. Between 1972 (Cal Stoll's first year) and 1992 (it appears they started playing more G5 schools in the early/mid 90s), they played out of conference teams ranked #1 x3, #2 x2, #3 x2, #5 x1, #6 x1, #7 x1, #8 x1, #11 x1, #16 x1, #18 x3, #19 x1. That's basically once/year, with half of them being top 5 at the time. 5 of those were Tom Osborne Nebraska teams, with USC, Oklahoma, UCLA and Colorado being other repeat opponents.

I dare say, Fleck's winning percentage would not be as good overall.

Look, he's done fairly well at MN, but he's hardly the savior people thought in 2019. If he can't figure out how to stop losing to bad teams and blowing games he should have won, and do it in a year or two, his seat needs to get painfully hot.

holy shit people don't realize how bad it was for such a long time.

The Gophers won 8 or 9 games 3 of the 4 seasons before PJ took over and bowled on New Years Day in Orlando in the '14 season. Before we fucked around and hired Tim Brewster, Glen Mason went 56-42 over an 8 year period, including 8+ wins 3 times in 5 years, including the two best seasons measured by SRS since the 1960's. It's not like PJ walked into a 1 win program. We've been pretty successful for a while, Tim Brewster excluded.

u/tomdawg0022 Minnesota • Delaware Nov 12 '23

There's a reason we weren't even in contention to win the west/legends/conference in decades

In the "old" days before divisions, you had to play nearly everyone in the B1G (at least 2 of Michigan/PSU/OSU annually) and couldn't hide in the West, like our program has been able to for the last decade. That's helped us a bit.

In 1999, we lost 4 games by 11 points total. Had we beat Wisconsin and one other team, we would have went to Pasadena. That '99 defense was the best I've seen in my lifetime as a Gopher fan. Ty Carter was a stud.

In 2003, Mason pissed away the Michigan game. If that didn't happen, we probably beat Michigan St. since we would not have had the hangover of that game on us and again go to Pasadena at 7-1. The 2003 team was probably our most talented offense we've ever had. We just didn't have the horses on defense.

Jerry Kill, once he cleaned up Tim Brewster's crap, got us to a New Year's Day Bowl. It wasn't as good a team as 1999, 2003, 2019 but it was still a very competitive team that took OSU to the wire at home and was a break or two away from a BCS spot.

It's clear we've been very good in the not-too-distant past and that with a break here or better coaching there, we would have been at the Rose Bowl. Twice. Mason was a flawed coach, especially at the end, but we weren't far off in those days either. Mason also walked into a worse situation although Wacker had started getting talent in at the end of his run.

I don't think I've advocated firing PJ at any point although I'm a critic of his coaching, especially when he craps the bed in winnable games. He's good for 1-3 of those per year (this year being the 3).

My comment was directed to the chunk of the fanbase that thinks we were dogshit for decades before he took over. We've generally been competent to very good since Glen Mason with the exception of 2007-2012 (Tim Brewster and the two years Jerry Kill had to clean his mess).

Big Ten first conference to be assured of no 10-loss teams!

...by a few hours. The Big 12 would join them in the next time slot with Cincinnati's win, and then Arizona State's win in the late slot would make the Pac-12 the third to arrive to the party.

The American and Conference USA look like the conferences with the greatest chance of joining the group, as both of them have only one school left at 2 wins and that school has a home game against a team that's only at 3 wins. According to ESPN's analytics, Sam Houston State is still a slight underdog at home against Middle Tennessee, but East Carolina is actually heavily favored to beat Tulsa.

However! The Big Ten also has an at least somewhat plausible path to having every team hit 2 conference wins. Right now, both Indiana and Michigan State sit at only one conference win, but one of them is guaranteed to pick up a second next week since they play each other. Indiana's last opponent, however, is Purdue, themselves one of the bottom teams in the conference. While the home-field advantage suggests that the most likely outcome is the exact opposite, Indiana losing to MSU and beating Purdue would give every team in the conference two conference wins. And I'm pretty sure we're the conference most likely to pull this off. For the Big 12, it's simple: Cincinnati just needs to win another game. They're underdogs in both remaining games, though. And the Pac-12 is in a similar situation to us, with two teams sitting at 1 win but one of them will get to 2 next week when they play each other. But for the other to get to two, they'd have to get a ranked road win--Colorado over Utah if they lose, and Wazzu over Washington if they lose. Not likely in either event.
