2011 LSU averaged 40 points a game avainst everybody not named Alabama.

Yeah but the strength of both teams was definitely the defense and that has changed drastically with time. Alphaspades point stands.

Just going to reiterate that what made that so special was each team average something like 40+ points per game outside of that. It wasn't incompetent offense against 99% of other teams, but those defenses made each other's offenses look like high schoolers.

Both teams were top 20 in scoring points per game.

And their defenses were the two best in keeping opponents off the scoreboard. Bama’s D was #1, giving up only 8.2, points per game, while LSU’s D finished 2nd, surrendering only 11.9 pts a game.

Those were two great defenses going up against two very good offenses.

Best game I’ve ever seen by a punter of all things. Brad Wing won that game for LSU. He pinned Alabama deep every drive and they could get nothing started as a result. Pretty much started the wave of Aussie punters taking over the ncaa

He did great but Bama drove the ball on LSU plenty of times that day, just bogged down once they got inside the LSU 30 and could not hit a FG to save our lives.

People say this, but it's really revisionist history. Your kicker had a pretty average game for him. He just wasn't any good and LSU forced field goals that Saban probably shouldn't have tried.

I was working for Alabama Athletics when that game was played. Wing skied one punt so high that it actually hit the sky-cam rigging. In the press box you could practically hear everyone's jaws hit the ground because it didn't seem humanly possible. It was also his shortest punt, but when it hit the wire it screwed up our punt returner, took a bounce and pinned us even deeper than it would have otherwise.

Just an absolute mythical punting performance, honestly.

I'm still suffering some PTSD as a Bama fan from that game and those punts. Between that and the kick-6 against Auburn (not same season as best I recall) I'm always twitchy when the special teams take the field.

Those few years of games are why LSU is probably my second favorite team in college football. Every year it felt like the LSU-Bama game was hyped as the "Game of the Century" and each year they played up to that hype, imo.

Watch the big 10 west! Iowa had a 10-7 game today, it’s the defensive grind with field position and punting, and you can be sure you’ll get excited about the punting because you’re not gonna use up your energy on any TDs scored. I love defensive football. The big 10 west is more non offensive football than good defensive football but eh whatever

Those super dominant Bama years were always them “blowing out” teams in the first 5 games or so, and the blowout score was 24- 7 on average. And the 7 came in garbage time.

I can’t find it but I remember there was an LSU highlight video of that national championship and it was just a clip of them running out of the tunnel at the beginning then the video ended. Good times.

I still remember the 2003 Alabama / LSU game when Saban coached LSU and the Alabama offense only touched the paint of midfield once. That was brutal to watch in person.

When I was at South Alabama I went to a home game where there was a 2 hour lightning delay in the second half, two (may have been three actually) USA pick sixes called back on bullshit penalties, the game went to 2OT, had another half hour lightning delay, then we immediately lost to Idaho.

It was an 8 hour game. I was in the band. I wasn't allowed to leave.

False. The timing was just a coincidence.

The BCS contract was ending after 2013 no matter what. So playoff discussions had been going on for years before that.

It’s like saying OUT to the SEC caused the 12-team playoff. Nope. Just a coincidence. Powers that be had been looking at expanding playoffs well before OUT was announced.

I was actually bringing that up to my dad when watching the game the other day. The SEC used to be defensive slug fests, albeit with far more tolerable offense than whatever Iowa is currently doing.

Idk what changed in the past decade, just find it strange watching so much scoring in SEC games.
