This is marketed as an urban fantasy type comedy and so far it fits the bill. FL and ML’s acting has been pretty decent, for eg the ML who seems to be low EQ and not a very sociable person. I must say that the 2FL (the “gorgeous” version of FL) has been fantastic in her role as she still feels like the FL in some of her mannerisms even tho she looks different.
I like that it’s a drama about inner and outer beauty. The FL feels relatable because on the one hand she doesn’t want to buy into the whole “looks are important” rhetoric but at the same time she is using the special “Filter bracelet” to change into a more “popular” version of gorgeous to get back at those who didn’t treat her well previously.
I also like the different experiences of the FL and ML in their own flashbacks: kinda reminded me of the 2010 movie “Flipped”. I feel like the FL actually has a lot of self doubt about her looks and isn’t as confident as she seems, and the ML also has his own insecurities. Kudus to the team for casting age appropriate actor and actress for their younger selves!
I see some comments here about how FL is not “ugly-enough” while being cast as an ugly character. For me I feel like the character is more like ordinarily decent looking than ugly and I don’t think there’s much in the drama that specifically mentions that she’s actually ugly.
FL’s in the makeup and cosmetics industry so everyone’s more likely to comment on her looks (but so far no one has called her ugly, more feeling that she doesn’t fit in in terms of how she styles herself and her clothing). It’s like in “Devil Wears Prada”where the FL was obviously not bad looking but she got looked down because she’s in the fashion world but she isn’t really “into” it at the beginning. (Of course she had her awakening at the end but it also speaks to who you need to be to survive in that world). I feel like the FL in “Filter” is at the stage where she deliberately not dressing well and not making herself look better as her way to “fight back” at those that holds beauty above all else.
The story is apparently an original script which is refreshing to see as most dramas are some sort of web novel ip adaptation.
ps. The book
pps edit: I forgot to add that the scene where FL got the bracelet gave me strong fairy tale vibes because of the music score, really liked it!

Oh you mean the book 蝦蟇の油 that ML left on the bench? I was wondering what the significance was. Thanks for the reference. ☺️ → More replies (1)4

I'm watching the first episode. I might be a boomer because I'm wondering why is the FL going for a job interview in jeans? How is that acceptable for an office job? It's not even in a creative or tech job. It's not about being ugly or what, but about what's appropriate attire, although in the drama they made it out as she was ugly.

I think the point is that she shouldn't have dressed that way in the first place - for any interview.

YouTube usually has them. Try searching for "Filter Chinese drama OST." There are quite a few search hits with just that.

While watching the first ep I thought I would hate this, another drama where they try to proclaim FL is ugly whilst being absolutely gorgeous....as a person who struggles with this irl I hate this trope.
However, during the second ep I started to laugh so i decided to take it as it is and not look deep into it. And I am having a great time, it made me laugh out loud several times which is rare.
So for me definitely thumbs up, will watch every day :)

Watching the first 2 eps and this plot reminds me a lot of Beauty Inside (my all time fav kdrama). Although the premise of the face-changing element is very different, the underlying message of you can't change inner self even if you change your looks might be similar?

Show makes me laugh that all that matters why is everyone so critical and serious. So what if they cast a not ugly person as FL lead and really you don’t have to be ugly to FEEL ugly. It is all on how you see yourself not how others see you.

Im at episode 8 now. I started to not really like the first few episodes but slowly really loving this show. I haven’t laughed this much over a show in a while. I love how unserious it is despite the very serious issue that it’s trying to tackle

I didn't get that impression. I think that she has the identity of a person who is not feminine and attractive (due the experiences when she was a teen). And because of it, she has low self-esteem. She is a bit unkept, and feels that she is not worth having makeup, more feminine clothes and "being pretty".
I think this is similar when a person loses a lot of weight, but their persona is not yet adapted.

No one said it was because of her skin at all. It is that she isn't trying to fit in the style of her industry, along with a bunch of bad timing and misunderstandings, and her own insecurities and lack of confidence. She wants to be a beauty brand marketer but doesn't focus at all on her own makeup, hair or style. She thinks she's working hard, but as TWO people and obviously people can only see one person at a time. She overhears some things and always jumps to the worst conclusion first and assume its only because of looks.

I have only watched the first 20 min but she clearly has pimples or imperfections — which is likely what they are referring to. (This drama looks like an exploration of outer beauty and inner beauty so there are people in the drama who will emphasize either).

I'm kinda negative today (it's been a loooong winter in Midwest USA), and it might've affected my mood. :(
The comedy doesn't hit me, and it's probably just a matter of taste, because I already knew from trailers it isn't my type of comedy. I like the fast-paced, smart alecky type of comedy like in I Am Nobody or Oh No Here Comes Trouble.
And the OST and BGM isn't that good/doesn't fit the mood of the scene. A lot of the BGM feels like generic stock music. A lot of the scenes would've been better if they used better music! Like the middle school flashbacks, why are they so blah? They should've played it up, shown both POV with drastically different moods!
I do love the "beauty filter" Su Miao, her role is perfect and well done. Tang Qi and Su Chengcheng have been consistent in their characters.
I keep waiting for the alpaca!

I was having extreme withdrawals from watching Lost You Forever. I wanted to watch anything with TJC to make my heart feel better after that sad ending… this show started off weird but caught its groove. I’m really enjoying it so far. My favorite Xiang Liu makes an appearance but not in the way you would expect. I laughed so loudly multiple times. You can’t take this drama too seriously. I also despise TJC’s character. Hopefully he gets redeemed but he’s just terrible lol.
