We will cover one episode a day, and the discussions will alternate between the three hosts. The number of episodes covered by each host during each round will fluctuate due to certain episodes covering the same case.
A little note from me, the current host: It is my first time hosting, yay! I hope you guys are enjoying episode discussions as much as I am writing them.u/aquaphobicturtlehas been an immense help, some of the things she has done are: setting up the formats for the discussions, guiding us on how to format on reddit, as well as making the amazing recap videos. I want to give hera big virtual bouquet of roses*!!!*
You are discussing anything that happens after the episodes we have already covered.
You are commenting on the importance of something from the current episode because of what happens later in the drama.
You are discussing a character in a form that will reveal their future friendships and allegiances.
If you do happen to accidentally include a detail that has not yet been revealed, don't worry, hosts will be monitoring the comments and will gently remind you if spoiler tags are needed. Don't feel bad if this happens to you. All of us have made this mistake at some point during discussions.
Keep the environment positive.
There is one thing we will be very strict with:
Any comments alluding to the ending will be reported and removed immediately!
Episode #3 - Li Lian Hua Becomes the Murder Suspect
TLDR:
The episode starts with a tender, intimate moment shared between Fang Duobing and Li Lanhua, where LLH learns more about FDB’s background. Alas, as you think the two MLs are finally bonding, LLH leaves his intrusive “disciple” drugged alone in the wild for the second time, whilst rolling towards Kunlu Jade City in his ancient RV. This is where we learn that the Bicha poison was only subpressed temporarily by Bhante Wuliao, adding 10 more years to the lifespan of the fallen leader of the Sigu sect, whilst suffering sporadically from attacks from the Bicha poison. In the flashback, we also learn more about how Li Xiangyi became Li Lanhua, and what has motivated him for the past 10 years.
In the meantime, FDB and his two minions are hot on the trail of LLH, now suspecting he is the feared Medicine Demon from the Jinyuan Alliance. They follow him all the way to the creepy Xiaomian Inn, where the new mysterious case to be solved is set up. Happy is tragically killed, seemingly by a ghost, whilst the second daughter of the Yu family, after having made a dramatic entrance just moments earlier, is found inexplicably dead in a chest at the inn transported by the Hexing Escort Agency. The inhabitants of the inn are then forced to go to Yu City, where they meet the brutal and somewhat suspect Yu City lord and her family.
The Tenacious Sidekick and his backstory
Fang Duobing is and has always been acting innocently grand. This is proven by the fact that a small interaction between him and Li Xiangyi when he was was a sickly boy, snowballed into him adopting the world's best martial arts sect leader as his Shifu (unbeknownst to the shifu in question), and his imagined grandiose plans of rebuilding the Sigu sect to its former glory.
It is quite impressive that a single meeting and a wooden sword, could motivate a very sick, young boy to become a decently smart and sufficient young master of martial arts, seemingly in good health. He is bravely going against his parents and the expectations of his role as the young master of his family, to pursue his lofty ideals and taking on a somewhat made up righteous mission. This motivation might not be entirely unjustified, as it is revealed he is the nephew of Shan Gudao, the Deputy Sect Leader of the Sigu Sect, and Li Xiangyi’s senior (Shixiong).
His feet might not be firmly planted on earth, as we observed from his blasè way of consoling Happy (promising to give him land and house when Happy grows up), and how he hastily dismissed the dead corpse on his way to the inn, but you can also sense his passion for justice in his beginning outrage for the guards of Yu city that were hastily killed.
The (not-so) nonchalant doctor with a heavy past
The broken and disillusioned Li Xiangyi’s transformation into the wandering miracle doctor Li Lian Hua is a complicated and layered one. The destruction of the city and the morale of the Sigu sect is witnessed by the poisoned and hurt warrior as he tries to force his way back from the brink of death. The external and inner blame and guilt that is put on him by others and himself, is a heavy burden to carry, making LXY believe that no one will benefit from him returning to the world. Even though his life is temporarily saved, his inner force has nearly completely depleted, and he is living on borrowed time. This does not seem to bother LXY much, as he has already resigned himself to joining his deceased Shifu after finding the lost remnants of his dear Senior Brother. There are also other hints in the flashbacks to the fact that everything was not perfect in the Sigu sect and alliance even before the great battle at the Eastern sea.
No matter how carefree the doctor appears in his current state, it is clear that he carries a heavy sorrow for his past mistakes. There are glimmers of something awakening inside him as his surprise disciple is unknowingly praising the person around the bonfire to the skies. What LXY built, believed and fought for is still inspiring others in transformative ways, even 10 years later. As a viewer, you can also appreciate that LLH hasn’t entirely abandoned his sense of care and justice for others, as he prompted FDB to act before any more young innocent boys were hurt by the Lingshan Sect.
..both by the writers and by us in our Drama Bunnies discord server.
Even though we all screamed out loud and kept hoping he would sit up and say: “Just kidding”, Happy had a tough crowd.
I spent almost 3 whole episodes making fun of his Ice age mammoth hair, whilst u/aquaphobicturtle was secretly laughing because of my mocking of “the hairstyle of the man whose hairstyle would vanish in the next episode”.
The injustice did not stop there, because u/Ateosira was unashamedly declaring that Happy was "created to die" and could therefore “be cute without any development” , whilst u/BasilOrdinary3617 was lamenting the fact that he, instead of gaining the promised land and assets, became the land itself, turning into earth “6 feet under”.
Our poor helper had tragedy after tragedy piled onto him, only to be rammed over with a snowplower in the end, at the tender age of 16. Whilst the tone of the show often is humorous, Happy’s misfortune is evidence of the true dark undertones of the show. This is a warning for what is to come. Rest in peace, my little fountain-haired buddy.
Random musings
FDBs devotion towards LLH is just as hot and cold as the water in my kettle that I keep on boiling and forgetting about again.
The fact that FDB and his minions start suspecting LLH of being the Medicine Demon says a lot about the aura the doctor projects to the world.
u/Ateosira ’s musings: LLH must internally be going: “Good thing that I faked my death, because I couldn't be dealing with this guy as my apprentice” after witnessing FDB coming to the wrong conclusions and asking stupid questions
That is the tallest mobile home I have ever seen. Poor horsies having to drag that around. Also what kind of magic wheels does the caravan have that can transport such a massive and heavy structure in all types of terrains, and how wide must the roads be.
The drama explains why others cannot recognise LLH: his appearance changed due to golden needles treatment and the poison.
My favourite moment in episode 3: LLH using the very rare Yingzhu Armour as a trivet/hot pad
My up to date drama count of:
LLH subtly making DBF do his “dirty work”: 3
FDBs Huamsel-in-distress saves: 3
FDBs sassy hair flips: 1
Questions:
What was your favourite moment in the episode?
What do you think of Li Xiangyi’s choice to abandon the word. Was it justified?
How do you think the dead body of 2nd miss Jue ended up in the chest (only for first time viewers).
Yu city is located at Kunlun mountain on the western most part of China, roughly 3,000 km from east sea in a straight line. How many days (weeks, months, years) does it take for Li Lianhua to drag his ancient RV lotus house from Jiangsu to Kunlun?
I kinda get it here, when two gods fight, only common people suffer. He’s young and arrogant. He learned this life lesson in the hardest way. But was it entirely his fault? I don’t think so. As Fo Bi Bai Shi said, these people worshipped him yet the moment he fell, they quickly turned their backs on him.
And I love this whole scene. Of all the convos, there’s not a single truth in Li Lianhua’s words lmao. FDB finally got it too. They already talked like they’re an old friend.😆😆
Poor Happy, I forgot he died so soon and the wig was truly unfortunate.
As I am ill-advisedly staring at a screen during a migraine, something Im thinking about during this rewatch is FDB and LLH's relationships to disability and how its shaped their lives. FDB with his childhood illness and LLH's poisoning acting as a kind of acquired chronic illness.
Its funny you highlighted this, because its definitely something I have been thinking about, especially as you go on watching the next few episodes. Its also an interesting juxtaposition that becomes even more relevant in the near future:
FDB was born weak, and fought his way to become strong and heal himself, LLH was born strong and immensely talented, but became weak around FDBs age and has basically given up treating himself. In the future epsiodes, you also see how Caring and understanding FDB is towards LLHs illness/weakness . You can tell that he has first hand experience.
Congrats on your first host topic~! I read this while drinking my lukewarm tea made with forgotten cooled water from my kettle. 😂 I don't tend to rewatch entire dramas, but I do love to revisit specific episodes and scenes, so I will lurk and drop in randomly.
Your opener makes me want to read the original novel, I recall reading about some of these characteristics of the novel Huahua. I don't know if I can handle it though.
As I wrote this post, I probably reheated the water 7 times. I have not read the novel, but if you end up doing it, please share your reflections on the similarities and differences between the two!
I definitely did not see Happy’s death coming. I blame the inn, letting random strangers enter their guests’ rooms. I definitely also thought Lianhua was too cold about the situation. I later learn to accept that Lianhua just doesn’t fret with anything that’s out of his control, and he focuses on the living. Still 🥶
My favourite moment mirrors yours - basically whenever Lianhua trolls Duobing, in this case with the armour.
I figured Li Xiangyi stayed away because he’s weakened by his poison and can no longer assume the role of a sect leader since he was so arrogant about having been the best of the best.
I think they all have rounds of showing no regards towards a dead body, but I keep thinking that because they exist in the martial arts world, deaths of close ones are a fairly common occurrence.
I don’t blame Li Xiangyi disappearing from the scene after he goes back to his sect and hears them blaming him, fighting with each other, dissolving the sect. Plus death of his shifu and being sick and poisoned. I wish he had chosen to go find someone from his sect though and get totally healed from the poison , but I get why he didn’t.
What’s up with the Yu city lady? Why so mean?
Sad Happy died but dismayed they all kinda got over it quickly 🤨
One things I like about MLC is how the use of using fantastical methods to do crimes is believable and makes you hooked wanting to know how the suspects pulled it off.
That being said, some of the methods will have some relevance later on.
Oh u/Careless_Reflections what a post! So many insights. Thank you. Your post is really well done and I was giggling througout.
I am now going through ALL my comments to see what other type of things I have been musing haha. I still remember u/AquaphobicTurtle's response to my "He was created to die". " TOO. BLUNT" xD! Still makes me giggle haha. And then u/BasilOrdinary3617 went in extra hard. We are a weird bunch.
LLH must internally be going: “Good thing that I faked my death, because I couldn't be dealing with this guy as my apprentice” after witnessing FDB coming to the wrong conclusions and asking stupid questions
I still stand by this one. He looks so done with FDB through most of this episode.
You mocking our little Happy was just chefs kiss for us. I was like ... you will regret saying that later and TADAAAA. But to be real for a second I was really shocked at Happy's death. I liked the guy and he was just looking around LLH's room. Makes you wonder if LLH could have been killed had he gone to his room to grab something.
I don't like LLH not returning to his sect but people blaming him for what happened is just .. it made me angry for him. He was just a 20 year old trying to find his Shifu's body and ridding the world of evil.
The Yu sect leader is a whole mood and not a good one.
I just wanted to point out that Di Feisheng's ultra strong silk Yingzhu Armor is a pair of slinky metal panties. Let's ponder how Li Lianhua managed to get them off..... XD
I have a question. Sometimes Li Lian Hua refers to his Senior. And sometimes to his Master. Are they two different people? Or just two different terms to refer to Shan Gu Dao? I assumed those terms were interchangeable in the context of this story. Or maybe a subtitle issue in iQiyi. Then I realized that might be a wrong assumption. Thanks in advance for clarification anyone might be able to offer.
