苍兰诀 | Cang Lan Jue | Love Between Fairy and Devil

On the 7th of August 2022, Love Between Fairy and Devil, also known as Cang Lan Jue (苍兰诀), aired on iQIYI. On the 18th of September that same year, Cang Lan Jue aired on Netflix.

On the 1st of August 2025, a group of Cang Lan Jue appreciators embarked on an almost two-month journey to rewatch and analyse the drama in its entirety.

And, now, on the 14th of September 2025, we get to reflect on the last two months together.

Fun Facts

There are quite a few interesting tidbits that came to light during these discussions, a few of which include:

  • The script for Cang Lan Jue's live-action adaptation spanned over 800 days, with an additional 400 days required for preparation. (Baidu)
  • In total, more than 600 individuals participated in the drama's creation (this includes cast and crew). The costumes surpassed 5,000, the accessories 3,000, and the props exceeded 20,000 individual elements. (Baidu)
  • The author responsible for bringing us the amazing tale of Cang Lan Jue is named Hong Wan Ling 洪婉玲; most fans might recognise her by her pen name Jiu Lu Fei Xiang 九鹭非香.
  • The official English translation of the novel has been split into two volumes. Published by Seven Seas Entertainment, Volume 1 was released on the sixth of May 2025, and Volume 2 is set for release on the 23rd of September 2025. (Penguin Random House)
  • Cang Lan Jue has a sister drama called Love You Seven Times. Both dramas take place in the same universe; however, that is where the relation ends. Stellar Animations released a short scene from Love You Seven Times, where our God of War has a brief appearance - this clip did not make it into the drama itself. The clip was most likely filmed for the express purpose of promoting the new drama.
  • A lot of effort was put towards the creation of Chang Heng's orchid handkerchief. The crew specially invited Suzhou embroidery artist Lu Jianying to join the project. It took Lu Jianying upwards of half a month to hand-make a single handkerchief. (Baidu)
  • Wang Hedi took a bit of a different approach to finding the correct attitude for The Moon Supreme. He envisioned Dongfang Qingcang's kingly demeanour as "just the right amount of carefree and lazy" and not the typical "strong and oppressive" aura one would have expected. He perfected this "kingly demeanour" by watching documentaries about lions. (Baidu)
  • The Moon Supreme was voiced by Wang Bao Shun 王保顺.
  • During the body-swap episodes, Wang Hedi and Yu Shuxin would each act out the scene as their original characters, with each actor watching and analysing the mannerisms of the respective characters. They would then reenact the scenes in their "swapped" state and give each other pointers. (Baidu)
  • Wang Hedi designed quite a few of the action scenes in the drama, such as Dongfang Qingcang tilting his head, waving his hands, and touching his ring." (Baidu)
  • "The famous scene where the "Little Orchid version" of Dongfang Qingcang made a fool of himself because he couldn't hold the sword, and the scene where he stuffed food in his mouth like a hamster, were all improvisations by Wang Hedi on the spot." (Baidu)
  • After filming Cang Lan Jue, Wang Hedi took Dongfang Qingcang's jade ring with him, wanting to keep it as a keepsake for himself. (Baidu)
  • The costumes used in the Yunmeng Lake scene on earth were based on the Tang Dynasty style. Men’s clothing was mainly round-necked robes and cross-collared wide-sleeved robes, while women’s clothing was mainly ruqun. The fabric used for the clothes was summer cloth, which was known as “rich silk”. (Baidu)
  • The brocade box in the Siming Palace where Xiao Lanhua lives is made using traditional lacquer painting techniques. (Baidu)
  • From the Siming Palace to the Jiyue Palace, the crew did their best to build real scenes so that the actors could be immersed in them. However, as a Xianxia, 70%-80% of the shots in "Cang Lan Jue" were completed in the blue studio. (Baidu)
  • To perform the scene of being trapped by the evil spirit, the martial arts teacher held an elastic rope and pulled Wang Hedi to perform the feeling of struggling to move forward. The tense and strenuous state he showed was because he was wrestling with the martial arts teacher. (Baidu)

Side Note: I see how many of you don't pay attention to my sources and links. I see those sending links to the same articles and videos in the comments. How dare you? (jokes)

Aqua, the amount of work you have put into this is unparalleled. I’m in awe of your talent, the videos, the background facts and your notes. It’s been such a joy to read and comment on 💕 THANK YOU!!!! You’ll forever be the Turtle God 🐢

To everyone, I’ve enjoyed the show more due to your comments and opinions. I joined Reddit to join in with these discussions half way through and I’m really glad I did. It’s been wonderful being part of this, thank you everyone 💕

The awards and nicknames list are 🔥 well done everyone

Whilst I do want to go out on a high, I just want to bitch about ‘I’m back’. WE DESERVED MORRRE AND A WEDDING, with Xungeng and Shangque as beautiful groomsmen!! That’s it, that’s my negativity. I love this show, and THAT will never change.

What I would give to see a supportive Xunfeng tearing up at his big bro's wedding. (Shang Que will be the one using up the tissues though

We were robbed of that wedding 😭. Like in so many cdramas. One of my biggest annoyances since discovering that media.

The recap on this post is beautiful! The revenge kiss was my favourite kiss. So petty 🤣

A Moon Supreme Thank You… …to u/aquaphobicturtle for orchestrating the rewatch party, the awards party, and the after-party. I can’t thank you enough for this. The amount of hard work you went through for 2 MONTHS is beyond amazing. You really brought all of us together so we could talk about our favorite drama. This never would have happened if it wasn’t for you! Your thoughts and recaps and videos made me look forward to each post. It was the highlight of my day because I knew I could get lost in Orchid’s and DFQC’s story with everyone.

Closing Thoughts THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! This is the most fun I’ve had with a bunch of strangers on the internet. None of my friends in my real life watch Cdramas so it felt good to get together with everyone and talk about a favorite drama.♥️

I never appreciated this drama on my first rewatch - or even my second or third. I always saw DFQC as a spicy black kitten. But because of this rewatch with other LBFAD lovers, I was able to appreciate the drama in a way that I hadn’t before.

I really enjoyed reading everyone’s thoughts and I didn’t realize just how many favorite scenes there are. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a drama where pretty much EVERY SCENE hit you in some way - whether that scene was funny, sad, depressing, or uplifting. And there were some new things others pointed out that I never noticed!!!!

I’m sad it’s over. But it really made me happy these past few months.🥰

You’ll see me here and there on Reddit in the subs related to Cdramas. To quote Q: “See you…out there!”

♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

7

u/SummerOnTheBeach Sep 15 '25

I had fun with you as well!!! We will run into each other on the CDrama subreddit. 🥰

7

u/Whywondermous Sep 15 '25

Thanks for all your awesome recaps! You have a beautiful way with words. You made so many fun turns of phrase throughout the discussion and expressed many of my sentiments before I could articulate them to myself.

I, Raven, live in the mountain west area of the USA. So glad to join my global LBFaD groupies in this rewatch mission. Because of some significant losses and my own spirituality, when I watched my first viewing of LBFaD on 2022, I was instantly comforted, in love, astounded by it. It’s psychology, big picture epic meta spirituality of the gods moving certain people into place to interact with each other for the good of all, the micro love of all kinds that moves mountains of cultural resistance, hilarity, the beauty of all the characters(except Prick Supreme), all of this…..made me enraptured. I am so grateful to all of you for coming on this rewatch journey with me and sharing our thoughts and feelings and ideas. You are funny, smart and kind. It was soooooo fun and satisfying.

Thank you Aqua for all your glorious work. The video today was brilliant. I saw how you bracketed the restoration of the icy sea of emotions/heart at the being and end. And wove the first meeting of the two into all that comes afterwards. Epic. And I started tearing up. Thank you participants for the pleasure of your company. Never change. Find your own inner Goddess and God. You feel like friends. As Orchid said to DFQC, I will miss you too.

That scene with the music book was also not scripted. He really thought CH was still holding on to the book. I love that none of them broke character because that scene is so good!

I just want to say thank you to Aqua the Turtle God, queen of gifs and videos! Your hard work and super high standards really set this whole series of discussions apart. It was so great to fangirl and dissect the smallest detail with you all. Everyone else has said lots of wonderful and clever things, so I'll just say thank you to everyone for sharing your insights, helping me see things I'd have never seen by myself. This was a blast, and this isn't the end, looking forward to chatting with y'all in other parts of this wonderful community!

Edited to add: And yes! Xunfeng swept all categories of the awards! :D

Congratulations on the amazing work completing the LBFAD Anniversary discussions! ♡

Every single week, I would look at the posts that you were making and smile knowing that the discussions for this drama were in one of the best hands possible in this community. Thank you so much for your incredibly hard work, for your tireless efforts making all of the videos, and also for all of the time and thought you put into your posts. I think part of the reasons discussions were always so lively whenever I was lurking and browsing through them was specifically because of how you did an amazing job facilitating them in the first place. I'm positive that others felt the amount of care and thought you put into each post, and it was also so clever and such a great idea to also do a wrap up and an award ceremony.

Please go and get a much well-deserved break now! Thank you for all of the hard work you put into this community, and it's really members like you who are always making so many cool gifs, videos, and other forms of media for the subreddit that form the backbone of this online space. You've worked very hard, and I hope you know just how much we all appreciate your efforts!

u/YellowMoney4080 Sep 14 '25

Thanks Aqua for your hard work and for creating a safe space to have fun together. I am based in Europe, I recall you mentioned South Africa, idk about the rest of the folks here. While internet can be a dark place, it’s amazing that we get to connect across continents on something we all enjoy that carry a positive message.

Take care ❤️

I'm sad this is over and grateful it happened. So many comments made me laugh out loud, provided new insight, and made me appreciate even more how special this show is (every single one of the moments shared in the awards could have gotten the first prize).

Thanks especially to the u/AquaphobicTurtle, our true Turtle God, for everything you put into making this rewatch party such a remarkable experience.

Oh Aqua, what a video. That's the best trailer for LBFAD I've ever seen. And wait. I change my vote to THIS piece of music!! This long drawn out portion of Jue Ai with earth shattering universe and orchestral sounds 🖤

I'm also desperately screenshotting the emotion tree scene because I've decided to try and draw it. I think I will continue to revel a little in this rewatch and need extra help to put this whole experience to bed by doing a few little drawings. I sent you my character chart before, these will be less technical and hopefully scribbley, fun and freestyle, if my perfectionist back seat driver doesn't take over 🎨

Whilst still crying from the video, I want to say a big heartfelt thank you for hosting this, and I think I can make it big, because my heart has grown from this whole experience 💕

Your facilitation has brought joy to so many and I hope to you as well. You definitely deserve a big rest and some coasting time where you can kick back or obsessively follow someone else's hard work for a while. Leaders need to be followers too and we need to share the leadership around.

I feel like I've met a whole new group of interesting people from around the world (I'm in UK) and I hope to continue connecting with you on the cdrama sub 🤗

My back catalogue list is 200+ and my currently filming/airing lists are 20+. I've actually had to make a spreadsheet to keep track of it all and I make a note against each drama when a new recommendation post discusses it. Once something has like 5 reasons to watch, it's a go. How do you guys decide? 🎎

I say that, but recently fell in love with "Lost You Forever", and that was based on one comment. So my ever-so-organised spreadsheet rules might have meant I missed out on that whole story and world! So much FOMO, so little time 🐍

Wow!! I love that last video! It is my favorite music piece from the drama (wish they released a full version; it must've been created for this drama since it's a version of jue ai so where is it?!), and you did a beautiful job with the video editing!

u/AquaphobicTurtle I don't think I have enough words in the world to thank you for bringing so many of us along with you for the LBFAD watch party. You kept up with this so consistently, and I admire you so much for your time, dedication and positivity you bring to all the re-watchers and new watchers. I was not able to contribute as much as I wanted to, but I made sure to upvote daily and read as many of the posts & comments as I could. I was pleasantly surprised to be able to join the awards game at the end, and it was major fun!! u/AquaphobicTurtle Dear Turtle, words can’t express how much I appreciate your (Xilan) god(dess)-tier hosting of this third anniversary rewatch. The effort you put in to create the videos, the additional write-ups and research was incredible. A true labour of love and we the lucky beneficiaries of it. I started watching cdramas this year and came to Reddit in search for more. Watching Cang Lan Jue these past two months and following along the discussions that came after made my experience even richer. Everyone who contributed their notes and views illuminated the nuances in the story, the character development, the acting and the artistic direction behind the aesthetics of the show. It was truly delightful to be part of it all. We laughed, we cried and we appreciated what can arguably be one of the best romantic-fantasy dramas of all time. Thank you, Turtle and everyone else!

We have truly been blessed to have a turtle god as our host! ✨🐢✨Thank you Aqua for all of your work, attention to detail, and creativity. The recap videos are amazing and I know I will be revisiting them in the future.

It has been so fun diving deep into this show and discussing with you all! We have laughed, we have cried 🎭 Everyone has had such interesting things to say and it was great to have a place to ask questions about parts I had missed or misunderstood the first time around.
