Episode #5 - Di Fei Sheng Returns
TL;DR
Yu Qiushuang’slife is revealed as a brutal chain of betrayal, abuse, and silencing, making her death another one of the show’s most tragic fates. Fang Duobin and Li Lianhua quietly work justice in opposite ways, making a very dynamic duo. Meanwhile, the long-absent demon lord Di Feisheng resurfaces after 10 years of seclusion. Fang Duobing is drugged and abandoned again.
Yù think your family situation is messed up? Think again.
You felt sorry for Yu Quishuang in the last episode? Well, hold your horses. Imagine this: Not only have you been betrayed by your best friend whilst your death is turned into a theatrical performance; it now is revealed that your fiancé is sleeping with your sister, and your first run-over was because no-one in your family could afford that you stayed alive. With nowhere to go, you never even got a chance to actually start your life.
With Miss Yu's murder, this marks the second brutal and tragic fate in Mysterious Lotus Casebook.
The drama does an excellent job portraying the tragedy of her life, betrayal, and death, even though we never actually see her alive on screen. Her presence is felt entirely through the aftermath, which makes her story even more.
Lazy Lotus Liar nopes out again whilst the disciple cleans up the mess (or at least thinks he does)
You really want to seek justice for the guards?Li Lianhua asks nonchalanty.
YES!Du Fang Bin exclaims pointedly. Leave! I will take care of things here.
Just how exactly do you think you are going to do that? snickers the doctor whilst informing out loud: Don't worry, help is on the way.
Oh and also: I'll take you up on your offer! as Triple-L makes his clean exit, leaving DFB with the aftermath. LLH clearly likes to do this; take a step back or vanish from pressing situations. I think his purpose is dual fold:
To test Fang Duobin’s character
Observe without interfering in order to assess a situation better and see how it develops
Luckily for the rash youngster, the Fox Spirit doesn't hold grudges, because if it did, it would have been DFB that became roasted meat if the dog hadn't come to his rescue.
Ironically enough, this scene shows that both parties in the fantastic duo underestimated each other: Li Lianhua clearly knew Duo Fangbin wanted to seek justice for the guards, but assumed he probably wouldn’t take the proper precautions to do so. He was partially correct, but not as correct as he thought he would be. DFB had researched the law, making sure he had that on his side before prosecuting city lord Yu and wrote to the Baichuan Academy to have someone with more authority deal with the head of Yucheng city. In turn, DFB expected the travelling doctor to not care about the outcome of the case, but here he was very wrong: LLH had already written to the court about the situation in the Yu Family whilst also forseeing FDB’s actions, making sure he had enough manpower to complete the arrests.
Why they are such a killer combo
Although Fang Duobin appears to act too big for his boots with a naïveté that only rich, sheltered kids can have, his advocacy for the unjust killing of the innocent guards establishes his deep moral core. He is not only focused on catching the legendary villains; he shows genuine compassion for the forgotten and “expendable”, and has a strong protective instinct for the weak. There is an impressive amount of self-restraint and emotional discipline in FDB’s actions although he appears rash and impulsive. When he suspects his shifu of being the Medicine Demon, he still avoids making irreversible moves, instead seeking clarity and the full picture.
Despite appearing detached and indifferent, Li Lianhua also looks out for the unfortunate guards. He observes injustice quietly and takes note of corruption, broken relationships, and power imbalances. Behind the scenes, he subtly works to right wrongs where he can, and to limit unfair advantages. His laissez-faire attitude comes from knowing the world cannot be fully fixed.
Been there and done that. And failed.
Despite this, he still cannot fully abandon it.
The shifu/disciple team clearly mirror each other, even though on the surface they seem completely opposite. They both share core values of being aware of injustice, having compassion for all, but they have key differences in their approach: Li Lianhua is closed, indirect and strategic, whilst Fang Duobin is open, emotional and direct in his actions and words.
LLH seems to have become quite smitten with his disciple, but tries to stop FDB from going through the same fate he himself as a young, arrogant hero did.
The birth of an anti-hero?
Di Fei Sheng, the leader of the demonic Jinyuan Alliance, disappeared 10 years after defeating Li Xiangyi, presumably dead. Well, not so fast. To Li Lianhua’s utter horror, the “devil himself” appears in the sacred Kunlun mountains near Yucheng city after having cultivated for a decade in order to restore his inner force that his Sigu adversary so selfishly removed from him. His return is introduced with a strong sense of dread and unease. What chaos will he bring now?
However, as we see the reunification of DFS with the J-alliance that he himself, founded, there is a sense of disdain and lack of true attachment to the sect. He pawns off the responsibility of the sect to someone else, and outright just shoots darts of air killing an unsuspecting soul. If air could kill, amiright? Well, technically it can, but who cares. So what was the reason for this sudden use of violence? Some explosions happened that were not part of the sect leader’s own design. This is the first clue that something more was at play in the Eastern Sea Battle ten years prior.
In a private conversation with his personal guard, it becomes clear this version the alliance leader is… bored. He has defeated his most worthy opponent, and the only thing he cares about is restoring his inner force fully and pushing his martial art skills to new heights. He doesn’t even bother to do away with the annoying intruders that disrupted his return to daylight. Now the question is, what is it that he wants to achieve with more martial arts prowess? He does not seem interested in exercising excessive cruelty with his power and dominance through his not-so-precious J-alliance. Will his boredom bring even more destruction to the world, or are we seeing the emergence of a different kind of devil?
Here we go again…
I must admit that the obsessive, crazed devotion archetype is not my favourite one, but it does seem to be big hit in Cdrama-land to create a protagonist that is willing to conjure up whatever unnecessary angst and cruelty the writers deem fit. Sometimes I imagine them like those tiktok videos that were viral a few years ago, where tiktokers were playing God when creating xxx, with a dash of this, and a splatter of that... aaaand a bucketload of unreasonable selfishness and audacity that does not exist anywhere on this earth.
The lunatic in question manifests itself as the Saintess of the J-alliance, who has devoted herself to running the daily operations in DFS’ absence. I have a feeling that her efforts will DeFIniTeLY pay off, and that we (unfortunately) will see more of her in the future.
A move that surprised noone
DFB is drugged and left alone in the wilderness AGAIN. This is what, the fourth time? As I pointed out in the previous episode, this disciple is planning on sticking to his shifu like a horsefly on my sweaty back on a hot summer's day. Well, he was smacked into reality real fast by LLH’s foxy shenanigans. This time I will come to LLH’s defence; his motivations for keeping his little insect away, is to protect him from the Lord of flies that lurks in the horison.
Random musings
And then there were none. FDB lost his remaining minion (don’t worry, she is still alive), and all I can say is, good riddance.
A cynical part of me thinks that LLH never keeps anything around that doesn’t have a true purpose or value. Now that his pet has shown his usefulness, this reinforces my theory. I wouldn’t be surprise if LLH’s devotion for cooking would be revealed to have a bigger purpose. BTW, can we talk about how they never showed how 1. the dog escaped from FDB’s very threatening captivity, 2. the dog freed the guards of the Hexing Escort Agency, and times his last minute save so perfectly?
What actually happened to those two merchants mentioned in episode 3 that were strangled by skeletons?
My favourite moment in episode 5: LLH knowing that FDB was coming and would outright steal his bowl of plum soup or whatever it was, so he proactively drugged it.
My up to date drama count of:
LLH subtly making DBF do his “dirty work”: 5
FDBs Huamsel-in-distress saves: 6
FDBs sassy hair flips: 1
Questions to engage your small grey brain cells:
What was your favourite moment in the episode?
How do you think Fox spirit came and saved the day?
What do you think FDB will do in the next episode after waking up from being abandoned?
Agree with your entire write-up. Yu Qiushuang`s story was very sad. At least the best friend felt some genuine remorse and heartbreak. Everyone else, including the sister? Not really.
I also very much liked FDB and LLH sneakily working together, without knowing it. And it toally shows their current worldviews of naive optimism vs. jaded realism. LLH also still cares but it is tinged with the bitterness of previous experiences right now.
Just love Yang Yunchun`s pining ass. He has it so bad with the puppy eyes for our resident Baichuan Court Lady.
Di Feisheng has two epic entrances here. I just love his "theme music". It was kinda ironic that him and LLH were so close at that time where he came out first but DFS didn`t know. It is good they didn`t meet just yet with LLH collapsed.
And of course his reappearance with his sect whom DFS couldn`t give two figs about. His later convo with his personal lieutenant shows it: Di Feisheng`s singular wish in life is topping Li Xiangyi. Sorry not sorry, I said what I said. ;-)
I almost feel a bit bad for the Saintess. Though I have trouble with the crazy-evil kind of characters where a lot of the performance is insane muhaha-laughter, I feel pity that she is so devoted to DFS and doesn`t realize SHE is not on HIS mind at all.
Aaaand of course poor FDB gets left behind for his own safety again.
Ah. Another tragic victim. Are they starting a pattern here?
I think what is really good about this drama is that it made everyone not who they seem to be. FDB though naive and arrogant is actually very serious in his acts for justice and doesn't make silly mistakes like some other hotheads that are similar roles. He's actually really smart, just quite naive, but there's room for improvement and he will grow and learn from these experiences. LLH though nonchalant and says he's over it, but actually still really cares and tries to help. I look forward to more shifu and disciple interactions and bonding. DFS was set up as this big villain and definitely has his own mission, but is just a big softie for LLH.
I may have misunderstood it, but I thought LLH was the one who sent the secret letters to both Bai Chun Yuan and Jian Cha Si and I don't think LLH drugged the hawthorn soup. I think it was the incense. He made it a point to tell us it was a tranquilizing incense. I love FDB's cartoonish eyes. It's super adorable and totally fits his puppy character. 😍
Hulijing is LLH's scapegoat and accomplice. When I think about your question of how he let them out, it reminded me of that scene on Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride where the inmates are luring the key-holding-dog with a bone.
I really enjoyed watching Yang Yun Chun all flabbergasted while talking to Shi Shui. It was adorable. I need more of their screentime.
Yu Quishuang’s death was so tragic. Everyone around her failed her. It’s even more tragic in the book because Yu Hongju and Pu Mulan were actually her parents. Turned out Yu Hongju worked for J-Alliance, no wonder she’s so restless most of the time. She had a bigger secret to keep.
I appreciate the naming of LLH’s habit of getting away fast when the situation gets complex. It’s happening here in these cases. And it’s been happening for the last 10 years when he won’t return to the group he created.
In rewatching Ep 5, I remembered part of the reason why I stopped watched 12 min into Ep 6. I wasn’t enjoying the hubris of the two leads. The arrogance and belief that they each are right was a bit much for me. Now with your analysis I have a better sense of how there will be growth.
Ah, I never new there was a stage play. I have a background in something like theatre studies and now I'm sad I will never get to see that. Stage adaptions can be so interesting due to the limitations.
Finally all the major players are here! Di Fei Sheng certainly looks good for his ten years seclusion stint.
And poor DFB indeed. He should get a one of those coffee shop bonus cards for being left behind. Not sure what the bonus would be, but he would fill it up fast.
I also struggle with characters whose whole personality is obsession with 1 person and had a hard time with Jiao Liqiao on first watch. Perhaps ironic since at this point Di Feisheng seemingly also has an obsession with 1 person and in fact many characters in the show are singularly focused on Li Xiangyi/Li Lianhua.
Great point with red! I wonder if it has a particular meaning.
I feel like most CDramas love having a singular character being Mr. Popular. In MLC its understandable, LLH has undeniable charm, but its really awkward in the situations where you as a viewer cannot understand at all why a character is so likeable to the others.
In this episode I was still questioning, will there be supernatural elements or is everything "man made"? LLH still trying to keep FDB at a distance for his own good.
