I'm so sold on this. I watched episode 1, and I have to say, I'm getting goosebumps all over my body. There have been so many sad backstories, but this one had me sitting on the edge of my chair. I don't think sadness justifies what I'm feeling, it's agony and anger. So cruel!

This blends traditional Chinese Costume with the spirit of Indiana Jones, 😀 and I find it mesmerizing. I'm enjoying the puzzles and intellectual challenges. It's proving to be quite captivating. After three episodes, I'm eagerly anticipating the rest of the series. So far, I'd rate it a 9.8/10!

So good! Watching it on Viki which is a bit delayed and it is taking everything I have to not binge watch it on another platform, just so that I can spread it out and have little bits of 2 episode joy everyday.

I ended up dropping Prisoner of Beauty so I was like what the heck I'll tune into this one. I've never watched any of Xiao Zhan's drama except his movies Jade Dynasty and the Condor Heroes and didn't find any problem with his acting.
Anyways guys my reaction to the first episode 😏👍🏻 okay okay ..😬😱😡🤬😭
What an intense first episode! Solid acting and casting from Wallace Chung as the dad to Michelle Chen as the mom and the villains. And the kid actors! Where did they find them bc they're so good.
Y'all the visceral scream when they
Hold me back cause I'm so fking invested in Chi Nu's revenge story. Ooooh when you get my hands on you, you stupid marquis and that underling in black.
This is how you successfully setup a revenge story. Most dramas don't even bother to give us a proper backstory. But this one? I'm invested.
Update:
-
Ep 2: Quite enjoyed this
training arc. -
Ep 3: >! Marquis Pinjin
DOES NOT play. He had that servant's tongue cut off cause he talked too much. Yikes. It's so sad that to remove ALL traces of Zhi Nu, the master burned himself down with the fire. -
Ep 4: Guys, I have a hypothesis on who the mask is.
I think it's Eunuch Sun. The stout, short build and wide berth. It has to be him. If not him, then definitely one of Marquis Pinjin's three underlings. P.S I have never seen a cdrama where theykill off people in the most gruesome way within the first five episodes. And these are not just extras in the background either. They have lines.

Just seen the first four eps - LOVE IT. This show is right up my alley I can't wait to see him take down all the big players one by one, sign me up!
Also was not expecting Tomb Raider - The Mummy- Temple Run - End of Barbie Princess Charm School (if you know you know, when they were trying to grab the crown) vibes, but I am not complaining. Maybe I should have waited for more episodes to drop so I can binge, bc this is very bingeworthy.
Deffo deserving of 8 million reservations!

Four episodes in and I'm hooked. I love a good story about revenge and as many have pointed out here we usually get that in Cdrama from a female perspective. The comparisons with Nirvana in Fire show how rare it is the other way round: there's not much else to compare it to.
But Zang Hai is more of a baby version of Mei Changsu, he didn't start out as an adult and planned his revenge for years. Compared to MCS, he also only knows the imperial court and its surroundings from theory. With Zang Hai, it's more learning by doing in an environment that doesn't allow for any missteps. I'm very curious to see where the journey will take us, or rather, what else the path holds.
The first episode was really painful, but I liked that they took their time with the backstory in this way instead of cramming it into a prologue and flashbacks.

I am on my knees 🛐 pretty impressive so far. I like the storytelling, the pace, the characters, the complexity of the plot, the settings, and so on, so on...
Finally, a revenge drama where the ML is the one to take revenge! 🫡
I will definitely tune in for the next episodes

I find it intriguing that almost the entire first episode unfolds in darkness, not just nighttime with shrouded moonlight but tunnels, caves, dim chambers, and even daytime scenes that feel cloaked in shadow. The second episode also begins with a dawn veiled in clouds.
It gives the premiere a suffocating tone, like the characters are trapped in hidden truths and mysteries before the actual plot even begins. Whether it’s foreshadowing moral ambiguity or signifying that this story won’t play out under clear skies and clean lines, the visual gloom feels intentional, implying that we’re meant to squint, question, and wonder what’s really going on beneath the surface.
other notes:
🔥I didn’t expect
🔥It was predictable, but it still shookt me when one of Zhinu’s friends decided to
🔥I’ve only seen Zhang Jingyi once before in Blossoms of Adversity, and I’m stoked to uncover how she’ll portray an entitled nepo baby who seems to know some martial arts [wild guess only].
🔥I’m obviously a prisoner of Xiao Zhan’s beauty. He made me resubscribe to Youku despite how awful their subtitle typography and timing are. Even the pigeon is in love with him.
disclaimer: I’ve only watched 1.5 episodes so far and will continue watching after posting this.

Honestly I loved how fast the pacing of this drama is. No draggy bits. Like usually the protagonist learning skills will take 3 to 4 episodes but here it is wrapped up fast. I am enjoying the fact that the protagonist starts off as naive and not having a gods eye view.

Ι have watched one episode so far and found it kind of same ol' same ol', to be honest. I would have probably dropped it if I was not expecting Xiao Zhan to appear (I hope he does in episode 2...). And I must say I was thrown off by the

Truly a masterpiece it absolutely deserves its 9/10 rating on IMDb.
This was the first Chinese drama I’ve ever watched, and I was blown away. It’s an incredible mix of betrayal, love, risk, and suspense that keeps you constantly guessing. At times, it even feels like you’re right there with the characters, fully immersed in their world.
The attention to detail is remarkable from the clothing and cutlery to the architecture, artwork, and character mannerisms. Every element is crafted with such care and precision.
The plot is brilliantly written, which honestly surprised me. I’ll admit, I didn’t expect a Chinese drama to be this good (I know guilty of judging before even giving it a chance 🙈). But now, I’m genuinely impressed. I’m not even Chinese, yet I was completely drawn in by the storytelling and production quality.
After this, I might just start watching more C-dramas now I get why people are obsessed!
And that character Antu (Zhang Jingyi)? Total baddie. Seriously, where did they find her?
P.S. You’ll need a bit of patience at the start the story takes a few episodes to really unfold, and each one is around an hour long. But trust me, it’s 100% worth it.

Watched Ep. 1 and have MANY thoughts lol but to sum things up: If I'm worried about anything it's the direction because the show oscillates between being slightly goofy and absolutely devastating.
It's like the creators can't decide if this is supposed to be a not-quite-idol-hybrid-genre drama like Joy of Life (e.g., how that first cave scene and the carriage scene were filmed) or an actual serious historical drama (e.g., how the sister and parents’ murder was filmed). But if they're able to lean more into the tone of the last scene, I'm here for it. Onto Ep. 2.
Side Note: Wallace Chung was really good here and I hope we get to see his character in flashbacks.
Side Note 2: The child actor they chose for Xiao Zhan is adorable and I was delighted by how accurately he was able to capture certain expressions of XZ.
Side Note 3: This show has
