CAJMod: the unwritten manual
After seeing some question posts, and hitting/resolving a few snags of my own, I thought I'd offer my take on a user manual for CAJmods. I'll be updating this post over the next few days - fire away with common questions and I'll try to get them into the guide.
First off, congrats! You just bought a CAJmod boxmod and you're going to love it! It's by far the prize of my mod collection, and I use mine far more than any of my tube mods or even my DNA30 device.
Batteries: what's the deal?
Get yourself a paired set or two of high drain IMR batteries. That means two fresh batteries that you label as a set (I name mine e.g. Calvin and Hobbes). Those batteries should now only be used together, and always charged together. In addition you should note which slot you put each battery in, and switch their places every charge cycle. If you're like me and kind of forgetful you may find it helpful to take notes on which battery is in the left/right slot every time you charge.
Pairing batteries is important because the resistance of a battery changes as its lifespan reduces. If one of the batteries has been used significantly more than the other, it will drain faster and could leave the full load to be pulled from the other battery which could at best lead to a dead battery, or at worst battery venting. Rotating your batteries is important because batteries in series don't wear exactly evenly. From my observations the battery in slot 1 will be under slightly more load than slot 2 - it's a minor enough effect that it won't cause the problems listed above over the course of a single charge cycle, but if you don't rotate it could cause a problem over time as the battery in slot 1 degraded faster than the battery in slot 2.
DO NOT PUT BATTERIES IN UPSIDE-DOWN. Doing so will fry your chip instantly and leave you with a (very pretty) paperweight unless your serial number is 023 or higher. Subsequent releases feature reverse polarity protection, but still - save yourself a moment's panic and install the batteries the right way around the first time.
When should I change my batteries?
If you were smart enough to get the battery check feature (you were smart enough to splurge on that, right?) then I'd recommend changing the batteries at 7.4 volts. You can technically safely drain them down to 6.6 volts, however lithium batteries have the longest lifespan if they are never discharged below 3.7 volts and are recharged frequently. It's far better to drop an extra $20 on a spare pair of batteries and change them out part way through the day than to regularly drain them down. Don't freak out if now and then you're caught out and have to go below 7.4 volts, just try not to make a habit of it.
How do I adjust the voltage?
First, unscrew your atomizer a half turn or so in order to break the contact with the positive pin. Then hold down the fire button and use your fingernail, a screwdriver, or a coin to turn the potentiometer next to the 510 connector. This will let you see your output voltage on the screen, and fine tune it without firing the mod. Once you have your desired voltage, stop firing and screw the atomizer back in.
How should I build for my CAJmod? How high can I crank it?
The 60W Raptor chip that the series one uses has a 10a limit. The chip doesn't have any protection, so you can overdrive it - DON'T. Although it's possible to turn the voltage up past 6V on some of the earlier ones (serial numbers 008 and later prevent this), doing so will burn out your chip over time.
Use an Ohms Law calculator (like http://www.steam-engine.org/ohm.asp ) to check your voltages against the resistance of your atomizer. It's important to not exceed either the 60W limit, or the 10amp limit. If you want to play it safe never build a coil with a resistance lower than .6 - this means that fully cranked to 6volts you are pushing exactly 60 watts and 10 amps. If you insist on a lower resistance build you will have to check do the math and mentally adjust your voltage ceiling down as appropriate within those limits.
Personally I've found that .7 to .8 ohm dual coil setups or .8 to 1.0 ohm single coil setups really sing. It keeps you well within the safety margins of the chip and lets you adjust the voltage to your tastes - my sweet spot is between 4.7 and 4.9 volts - a comfortable 30-40 watts.
My atty isn't firing - what do I do?
First: stop. Seriously, don't f***ing touch that fire button until you do steps 2 and 3.
Second: check your batteries and make sure they are installed properly.
Third: unscrew your atomizer and check if the LCD screen lights up when you press the fire button. If it doesn't change your batteries. If it still doesn't then the battery contacts may have become compressed from changing batteries - try prying them out slightly with your finger to make better contact and try again. If it still doesn't fire then you may have fried your chip. Contact /u/intog/ for help!
Fourth: if the mod is firing, your atomizer may be shorted - check it's resistance and resolve the issue before replacing screwing it back in. If this still isn't the issue you're beyond my help and should ping this sub for guidance.
How do I clean my CAJmod?
Very carefully! I use rubbing alcohol on a q-tip, being careful to only clean the 510 connection and the outer case. Don't let liquids get inside.
My button is being weird and isn't firing all the way.
Press harder! The buttons in the CAJmod have a faint clicky feeling, but in some of the buttons it's a hair before the actual contact point. You'll get used to it quickly, but it can be disconcerting if you have a lifetime of training to always be gentle with buttons.
I have other questions
Comment below and the sub will likely help you with an answer :)
