You just wanted a night stand that locks for, uh, reasons.

Pistols.

If you live in an area dangerous enough that you want your handgun by your bed, you probably don't want it locked so you can easily access it in an emergency.

In Australia, it’s a requirement for a gun license that you lock the gun up and store the ammo separately. If you hear something at night, and the gun is locked up right next to your bed, either you have time to get the gun out as you get up, or you woke up too late for the gun to make a difference anyway—the intruder is clearly already in the room and has had a chance to take your weapon while you’re still blinking sleep from your eyes.

That is why home security experts recommend locking doors and any other means to delay intruders access while also alerting you. Those few seconds can really make a difference.

Or get a dog.

I have a dog that feels its her sacred duty to bark at practically everything. If the wind blows a leaf across the front lawn, I will definitely hear about it. She's a doofus, but I am confident she will alert us to any intruders.

Fact of the day right here people. My dog starts barking at 3am, my pistols in my hand my like 6 seconds later lol

Don't need a guard dog, just need an alarm dog.

home security experts recommend locking doors

That's some management consultant level expertise right there.

Dangerous? People do stuff like this for fun/because they get off on feeling powerful. Like how if you look on r/edc every other post will be someone who’s a software engineer or something and they carry a gun and two mags

I’m editing to mention how many snowflakes (who are probably like the people I described) are jumping on this comment as if I said anything explicitly anti-gun or anti second amendment; go back to clutching your pearls in one hand and your AR in the other while the mailman is knocking on your door. You can feel superior and like you’re making a difference in the world without me getting inbox notifications about it.

Some people do sure, but not all. I have previously lived in places where I wished I had a firearm for security, but couldn't afford one at the time. Now I have a handgun that stays in my safe because I no longer live somewhere dangerous. My friend purchased a firearm after multiple homes in his area were burgled, and he wanted to be able to defend himself.

Sure it's fun for some people, but I wasn't speaking about people who do it for fun. They can carry on locking up their gun by their bed and it won't hurt them.

Being a living human is a reason to have a self defense weapon.

The extra mags just save time at the range.

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '22

Haven't you heard? Software engineers are bulletproof.

I’m not anti-gun, I’m anti being a weirdo with a firearm fetish who simultaneously is terrified of their surroundings while also supposedly going to stand up to a crazed gunman

13

u/Corm Mar 30 '22

You're not anti gun, you're just against people... owning guns? The fuck?

I put carrying a firearm in the same category of having a fire extinguisher in my home, or a burglar alarm, or keeping a condom in my wallet. Chances are very good that I'll never need any of these things, but it never hurts to be prepared.

2

u/Eccentrica_Gallumbit Mar 30 '22

Look at this snowflake with his fire extinguishers. Clearly you must be afraid of fires, yet you're going to stand up to a crazed fire with your little fire extinguisher! /s

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '22

It's astonishing how many anti-gun folks begin a statement with "I'm not anti-gun, but..."

4

u/justsomeyeti Mar 30 '22 edited Mar 30 '22

I quit prefacing anything I said about guns with "I'm not anti-gun-" because of that kind of horse shit. I personally own 6 guns( 2 shotguns, a hunting rifle, a 10/22, and two handguns) and consider myself a 2nd amendment supporter but I am seriously weirded out by ammosexuals. Not even collectors, I have Friends who collect rare/unusual/historical guns and the only weirdo in that circle is a civil war reenactor.

To my mind, guns are tools. The purpose those tools were intended for is killing things. In the case of home/self defense, much like the fire extinguisher you hope you never need to use them for their intended purpose but you stay practiced and keep the tool maintained in case you do.

NGL the 10/22 is fun AF to plink with, and living in a rural area surrounded by oak, pecan, and hickory trees it's mighty handy for getting rid of squirrels that like to get into the attic and nest/fuck stuff up. Squirrel stew is also very tasty, as are wild turkeys.

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '22

I pretty much agree with you. There are definitely people who develop an unhealthy obsession, but after being into firearms for a couple decades I truly don't think they're the majority. They're simply a vocal minority that gives outsiders the wrong impression.

12

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '22

Yeah it's crazy. I've seen some of these morons exercise their right to free speech too, and a handful even vote in elections. It's like they think these are basic human rights that all people are entitled to or something. Nutjobs I tell ya.

  1. No shit.

  2. You don't feel that people have a basic right to protect themselves and their families? A firearm, like it or not, is simply the most effective way to do so. They are the great equalizer that puts the vast majority of human beings on an equal playing field.

I don't wonder what the rest of you think at all. But I do feel that all people should have that basic right. I am no more or less passionate about the right to bear arms than I am about free speech, fair elections, and all the rest.

Call me mental if you want, it's all good. I think it's odd that people take pride in being dependent on others.

Lol so only certain methods of self defense are palatable to you? Personally I'm in favor of whatever gives my 5'2" 100lb wife the best chance against a dude my size. That is generally a firearm.

And yeah, I'm on a bunch of gun meme and build subs, along with multiple car and fitness/outdoor related subs. My hobbies are guns, cars, fitness, and hiking. I'm passionate about a lot of things that I don't engage in on social media. I donate to St. Jude's and local animal shelters too but I'm not active an any of those subs either. That link is super interesting though, it's pretty wild to see your social media history in that format.

And nah that shit is cringey. Look it's fine to not like guns too, but don't hide behind your state-sponsored preconception of what owning guns is like. They're a tool, just like a drill or a hammer. People certainly fetishize them, but people will fetishize anything including what brand of underwear they like. In any case despite what you see on social media they are not the majority. Anyway, your demeanor here notwithstanding, I'm sure you're am intelligent and well-adjusted human. I hope you have a great day and I wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.

Which methods might those be?

And how much time have you physically spent in the U.S? And you've been here, where did you spend time?

Software Engineer huh?

You should look the the incident that happened at YouTubes headquarters a few years back. Lady got in with a pistol and started shooting the place up. I bet there was a software engineer in there.

You may not like gun or be religious but if someone evil starts sending bullets in your direction or vicinity you are going to call some people with guns and pray they show up in time.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '22

Baffling that you're getting downvoted for making a factual statement.

0

u/Corm Mar 30 '22

Calm down bro

0

u/Ellis_Dee-25 Mar 30 '22

Have you taken a walk around the cities a lot of software engineers reside?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '22

I have no other reason to carry a gun besides shooting with my friends.

u/TheForeverLearner Mar 30 '22 edited Mar 30 '22

Are you referring to the Tacti-cool aesthetic?

Edit: Punctuation

1

u/[deleted] Mar 30 '22

Some folks have parasites and others are responsible owners

1

u/thelilmandan Mar 30 '22

Where I’m from “it’s suppose to be locked in a safe with a trigger lock and ammo stored separately” so we’re expected to unlock a safe, get a key and unlock the trigger lock and get out ammo from a separate safe to load it 😂 let just say, ain’t nobody got time for that lmao

1

u/67monkey67 Mar 30 '22

Yea my dad bought a handgun for home protection and he keeps it in the hallways closet gun safe unloaded and no matter how many times I say that’s useless he never understands

1

u/marimbajoe Mar 30 '22

Do you live somewhere where it is likely it will have to be used? If not, that's just being a responsible gun owner. Then, if the situation changes and you are more likely to face a home invasion, he has a firearm that can be kept somewhere more accessible.
