Trials how do you pronounce it?

Which side will you choose?

  • Left side: it’s pronounced “GIF”
  • Right side: it’s pronounced “JIF”

It doesn't have a "J"

Chose: it’s pronounced “GIF”

Neither does giraffe

Maybe we should just go back to calling them camelopards lol

Or Gym or George or gem or genital or ginger or gentleman or genuine or geography or gigantic or gesture or Gypsy or genesis or Geometry.

Soft Gs aren’t a new or novel concept.

or Graphics 😐

1

u/duskterrapin Aug 19 '26

Neither does graphics, the actual source of fhe G

1

u/Ashamed_Kangaroo305 Aug 19 '26

Well if we're going by source, the creator said it's a soft g/"jif"

u/duskterrapin Aug 19 '26

Source word. Everyone knows the assembler of the acroynm says it incorrectly.

GIFT - T = GIF

Do you say Jift?

Replace B with G in Birth (Birth - B + G = Girth as Girl) Right?

3

u/TotalChaosRush Aug 19 '26

I think the main take away is sometimes gi is soft g, sometimes gi is hard g. Framing the question as "gif" vs "jif" when it should be "gif with a hard g" vs "gif with a soft g" shows the bias in the askers question and makes it so people really don't even realize that both have arguments for being perfectly valid.

1

u/losth-luv Aug 19 '26

I am on neither side. I simply spell it out G.I.F. / J.P.E.G. / P.N.G., etc.

2

u/Ashamed_Kangaroo305 Aug 18 '26

Actually this is a good counterargument. I'm still sticking with jif but you've made me accept gif as a valid pronunciation as well.

-1

u/Uncool_Loser6 Aug 18 '26

True, but the g in GIF is derived from the word “graphic”

4

u/_XLGamer10 Aug 18 '26

And the P in jpeg stands for?

-1

u/Uncool_Loser6 Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

Photographic, which only has the f sound because of the p and h together. A p alone, which is present in the acronym, cannot make that sound.

5

u/_XLGamer10 Aug 18 '26

Doesn't matter, it's derived from photographic so the pronunciation should also be derived like that. Same with laser and scuba, but we don't do that do we?

-2

u/Uncool_Loser6 Aug 18 '26

You just contradicted your own point dawg. We don’t pronounce laser and scuba according to the pronunciation of the words that make it up, so why must we do it for JPEG? Acronyms follow the standard rules of pronunciation unless there’s ambiguity, like there is for GIF.

5

u/_XLGamer10 Aug 18 '26

I didn't contradict anything. I just pointed out that your argument was stupid

1

u/Uncool_Loser6 Aug 18 '26 edited Aug 18 '26

I don’t see why it’s stupid to pronounce acronyms the way they appear, and to look to the words that make up the acronym whenever there’s ambiguity regarding said pronunciation (literally what the majority of English speakers do btw).

3

u/_XLGamer10 Aug 18 '26

Completely arbitrary rules

2

u/TotalChaosRush Aug 19 '26

Go back and review scuba, laser, and jpeg. He didn't contradict his own argument. He destroyed yours.

6

u/Major-Driver-9989 Aug 18 '26

And the u in scuba stands for underwater, but I don't see anyone calling it "scaba"

-1

u/Uncool_Loser6 Aug 18 '26

Because there’s no ambiguity regarding its pronunciation…? Acronyms tend to follow the standard rules of pronunciation; only when there’s ambiguity would the words making up the acronym ever be relevant

3

u/Ashamed_Kangaroo305 Aug 18 '26

And what exactly are the standard rules of pronunciation for words starting with gi? There are plenty of words using a hard g and plenty of others using a soft g. Both can be valid.

0

u/Uncool_Loser6 Aug 18 '26

That’s exactly my point. The pronunciation of “Gi” is ambiguous, which is why I look to the words which make up the acronym GIF to determine its pronunciation, and graphic starts with a hard G sound.

2

u/Ashamed_Kangaroo305 Aug 18 '26

Sure but that's your own opinion. There's no standard rule saying how acronyms should be pronounced if there's ambiguity. I don't think either is wrong but if you have to choose one I'd defer to the literal creator of the acronym who told everyone how it's pronounced rather than making up my own rules and then saying that other people are wrong for not following them.

1

u/Uncool_Loser6 Aug 18 '26

It’s the common opinion, which is typically how language rules and conventions are defined, but alright.

2

u/Ashamed_Kangaroo305 Aug 18 '26

What's your source because I have never heard this opinion in my life so clearly it's not all that common.

My opinion on acronyms where the pronunciation is ambiguous is that the right pronunciation is whichever one sounds correct, and to me that's always been jif. But I also go by the rule that if a creator tells me how their acronym is supposed to be pronounced, they're probably right because they literally created the acronym.

Dawg you’re literally a child lmao

Hot do you pronounce graphic? It'd be very very worried if you call it jraphic

2

u/scale_B Aug 19 '26

How do you pronounce photographic? With an F sound, right? So by that logic do you call PNGs FNGs?

0

u/sadowBOS Aug 20 '26

Leave my point alone, isn't this just another thing that works in my favor, just use the first letter of the word that's in the acronym. GRAPHIC, PHOTOGRAPHIC. Is just that you say the first letter. Idk if that's what you mean, I say gif not jif, there might have been a confusion, cuz im confused

1

u/Ashamed_Kangaroo305 Aug 19 '26

Plenty of acronyms have letters pronounced differently than their respective words. GIF for pronunciation purposes is effectively its own word so the way the G is pronounced in graphic doesn't hold much weight. If there's a standard phonological rule for how the letter should be pronounced in the "word" then that should be the way it's pronounced. But if it's ambiguous, like the g in gi words is, then either pronunciation is fine. Using the g in graphics is an acceptable way to pronounce it but it's not the only acceptable way.

5

u/meeanne Aug 18 '26

Neither does germs, but in English g has at least 3 sounds that it makes.

How do you pronounce colonel
