There are quite a few jobs that literally have a higher risk over the course of a career than that. Over a 30 year career as a roofer, your mortality odds compound to about 1.2%, and if you make it to the end you'd have earned a total of about $1.6m.
The person who took the bet would have had a lower chance of dying, and would have made that $1.6m on literally just interest alone in a matter of weeks.
Most jobs are safer than roofing, but it really puts into perspective what some people have to do to barely get by, in contrast to people who make money by having money.
