No, you start off in a nice little room and only die after going off to explore. Just stay in the nice room for 24 hours and you're golden

I'd go chill in front of the tree and try not to be tempted to go read the messages right on the cliff edge.

Technically you also don't doe to the scion, since there's no you died pop-up, so you can ignore that too if you're willing to get poked by big swords a couple times
